it really doesn't sound to me like your piece was that bad. it caught your fall right? but it was a flaring placement, so when you leaned back with your feet on the rock, you might have pulled it out into the flare, making it fail. do you think this was the case?

if it was indeed a "bad" placement i'd probably say nay.
if falling on to the bomber lower piece would have been a safe fall, you would have been better bypassing the crappy gear, conserving mental and physical energy, and running it out to the next good gear.
