Recently I read a book called _The Quotable Climber_ by Jonathan Waterman. It had a ton of great quotes pertaining to climbing. My favorite quote is: "...climbing is not the only way of dealing with an over-organized, over-protective society. But it is one good way." -Woodrow Wilson Sayre Another favorite of mine is: "Never noticed a female monkey not climbing as well as a male, have you?" -Don Whillans, upon being asked if it was possible for a woman to be a better rock climber than a man. What are your favorite rock climbing quotes? They don't have to be said by rock climbers.

No offence, But I hate quotes. I think there a stupid and pointlessly ego-boosting. Any quote can be bad. Lets take.... "Never stop trying" or what ever. I guess I should never stop gambling, cuz ya know, if I put in one more Quater I could win many Quaters! I dont mean to offend anyone. Just my Penny x 2

I disagree! quotes can be motivational, thought inspiring and just campfire amusing! Don’t really think ego plays all to greatly into it. But whatever tickles your pickle I guess….

Wow that was some great insight. I never knew that you could have that much life experience, when they are only 15. If we could all lead lives as fullfilling, and enriched as B_G I don't think we would need quotes either. But since we are all but humble pee-ons, bowing in magestic awe, we need quotes to put a smile on our faces. Gabe

"Lead, follow, or get on Belay!" The following two are ones I use all the time when teaching people. "If your going to fall, you might as well fall while trying" (rather than simply letting go and falling). Try to make one more move, sometimes you surprise yourself and make it. "Grigris don't drop people, People drop people!" This is my take on the "guns don't kill people..."

I don't remember the exact quote nor where I got it (could have been one of the random ones on this site). It went something like this- The way to train for mountaineering is to make yourself as hard as you possibly can to kill. After all, that's basically what alot of mountaineering is, staying alive when the mountain is trying to kill you. I may have misquoted it a bunch but oh well, correct me. I think quotes are very useful and inspiring. If you don't think quotes are useful, I know you've never heard your belayer say, "Just go for it, you p***y!" I have great climbing partners

Whether this is a real quote or not, I can't say. However a friend of mine attributed this quote to Peter Croft. "It's not about hanging on, it about letting go." Whether or not it was said by him or anyone, I think these are great words to live and climb by.

damn, I am not the first person to quote Curt Shannon! "Oh! You only have three more chances to flash it!" (said after I fell off a problem) "The key to good footwork is having really strong fingers." And one I saw from jt512, but I don't think he originate it: "if the back of your hand touches the rock, it's not climbing." Another I can't remember the source of (angry would know): "I can't see how any crack you can get your whole hand in can be harder than 5.9"

I like these: "A climber's day always starts at the crux: getting out of bed." kind of a funny one "How do you distinguish between being off-route and putting up a first ascent In fact, I think you should add your body fat to the rating of the climb, to get a true measure of your inner climber. So climbing a 5.7 with 22% body fat is way harder than climbing a 5.14 with 3% body fat."
