I'm in a sticky situation here. I need to go climbing tomorrow afternoon but the only rope i have is the one my dad does towing with. It's definitely dynamic but not so much anymore. I left my new sweet tr rope with my friend over the weekend so I'm sorta out of luck....unless :( . Unless I use my pa's tow rope. I'm kind of nervous because its been sitting out under the porch since last fall. After inspection, besides being a little stiff, the only problem I detected was a bare spot near the middle. By bare i mean only the major strands are showing, none of the little ones, which I've heard is still kosher. Ive read some very interesting top secret articles (that the rope companies don't want you to see by the way) on the net that say you can pretty much spill battery acid or gasoline on your rope and it will be fine(pictures included for proof). Now, I don't want to be stupid and totally trust this web site, so some good advice would be pretty sweet. Has anyone here ever used a rope that has sat out through the winter, and/or been stretched out haulin' loads? We plan on doing some tr'n and maybe some gear climbing. Easy gear climbing if that makes a difference. Thanks

Granted i dont know crap, if poeple wont climb with webbing they used to slack line with, i am assuming a rope used to tow stuff with, wont be looked upon as safe, but as i said, i dont know crap.

Me, myself, personally, I wouldn't use it. I'd skip climbing, or go boulder instead. Why? For me, it's not worth risking my life (and my climbing partner's) because I don't know what condition the rope is in. It's up to you to evaluate, and I don't have any experience with old, abused, stored-in-the-elements ropes, but things you may want to consider: -What exactly is this rope? Is it a certified climbing rope? -Just how old is it? -Was it originally used for climbing? And if so, why did it get retired and relegated to tow rope? -Just how much abuse has the rope been through? -And finally, are every one of your partners willing to accept the risk posed by this old rope? Just because you may be confident in the rope's safety, one of your climbing partner's may not be. In which case, you should not use it. I agree that you should not totally trust this website. I would also recommend that you don't entirely trust these top-secret articles you mention (I haven't seen them, so I can't really judge them). You mention they included photos as proof; keep in mind that any person with decent skills at Photoshop and a little free time can fake just about anything in a photo nowadays. Jeff

Ninjas can kill anyone they want! Ninjas cut off heads ALL the time and don't even think twice about it. These guys are so crazy and awesome that they flip out ALL the time. I heard that there was this ninja who was eating at a diner. And when some dude dropped a spoon the ninja killed the whole town. My friend Mark said that he saw a ninja totally uppercut some kid just because the kid opened a window.

Your question sounds sincere, so I won't call TROLL, but I am sure someone probably will. It is simply general knowledge, as proven by countless threads on this site, that you DO NOT climb, toprope or otherwise, on a rope that has been potentially exposed to damaging substances and/or shows signs of significant damage (i.e. the core is showing) :!: Sorry, I cant say I have any experience with using damaged (potentially or otherwise) ropes for climbing, for good reason, I have chosen not to do it. btw, there are plenty of "top secret articles" "proving" things known as conspiracy theories too. If you believe all of them, then you would probably believe that pouring battery acid on a rope won't damage it, otherwise THINK ABOUT IT

Forget what they've all said. Go ahead and use it. It's just incentive not to fall! If you have some gasonline, soak it in that. It'll bring the life right back into it.

hell tie a butterfly knot around the exposed core and then belay your mom on it, i'm sure she's fat and if she falls and breaks the rope, then you will know you shouldn't have used it yes i'm also WAY bored out of my mind at work. hmmm 15 minutes to go...

That reminds me. What happened to the Holy Roman Order Of Normans? I was hoping to pledge, but it sort of went away. I'd say it's time for a revival!

Oh, more internet bullshit. Everyone knows you have to boil the gasoline first, to bring out the rope salvaging isotopes. If you use un-boiled gasoline to soak your rope, you'll die.
