A job allows you to buy cool toys, but without lots of vacation who has time to play with them. On the other side of the coin those with part time jobs have lots of time to play, but no money.
or try doing something that's actually worthwhile and meaningful, stuff that other people would pay you plenty to get done, rather than just putting up with a job that pays the bills or for whatever else. those tend to have better work hours and more vacation times too. lots of people gripe about the rat race, the same people who made it a rat race

Find a service need in your area that no one covers or is covered inadequately. Become a specialist in that area then open your own business.

I am my own boss. I set my own hours. If I decide to take a week off, I take it off. And I don’t work weekends unless I want to. Now if I can just find a regular climbing and mountain bike partner, I’d be set.
The only problem occurred with this concept, if you are too good, your reputation spreads. Those in your area engaged in the same service, hand their customers over to you and move on to something else or another area. As business grows play time shrinks. You could always hire and train a crew. But I find it more beneficial to just turn down new customers.

Beware of Creeping Incrementalism!

One day you're a horny little bugger focussed on adventure, you meet Mrs. Perfect and fall madly (MADLY) in love. You promise kids and then one day you are called to account for those promises. You do the best you can until then and you do your best after then to; pay the bills and do what really inspires you.

Good Luck!
Jeff
...that's quite deep...

Incrementalism? :?

I just did this! ... the change of life.

I was stuck in the midwest in a 9-5 for the last 5 years, had a house full of furniture, a commuter car, racecar, motorcycle- the works. Couldn't get to decent climbing without spending a fortune. Even if I could, who's got time in the U.S.??? Then I found a job in Beligum with the catch- only 20 days to move. I Sold EVERYTHING except for 2 suitcases (1.5 of which was climbing gear) and of course my dog. Moved my ass over here with the quickness. Now I'm working a 9-5, but Euro-style with 25+ days of vacation, Ryanair flights (50 Euros or so) to climb all over Europe every weekend, Fontainebleau just 3 hours away, sharp multi-lingual international people all around. I'm in heaven. The fact that my apartment is empty (I sleep on an air mattress) and I own one fork, one knife, one spoon and one plate doesn't phase me because I'm never home, anyway. Do I miss the house full of sh*t? NO :!: It was hard getting rid of everything for about 5 minutes. But I have never felt so free in my life.

So I guess my advice is: sell everything and, if possible, move to Europe.

Reno has one of the best gigs I know of.
As a flight paramedic working 24 hour shifts, his work is done in 2 days. schedule it right and you have 10 days straight of climbing (road trip anyone?) or do some OT every once in a while. Plus you have a skill usable in the wilderness.

Don't know if you can get away with it in the us, but over here you can work 80 or 90%. Me I work 90%, so every other Monday is free.

Best to live somewhere with an afterwork crag as well. As for the toys... I find that the more I climb, the less I think about gear, and the less I climb, the more I think about gear. Easy solution there.

Im not sure if you are into sales or not (it doesnt have to be outdoor industry repping). Depending on what you do and how hard you want to work off and on you can have a serious amount of flexibility in your schedule and at the same time make quite a bit of money. I own a small company and my partner is always asking why I want to drive all over the southeast and take flights to vancouver or denver at the drop of a hat when we have sales guys that we pay to do that. The answer is my fly rod and rock shoes in my trunk or in my carry on.

I have a family, mortgage, private school tuitions, and employees to look after. When I start to feel like a hamster in a habitrail I just step off for a bit and either take a nice road trip or fly somewhere for business with all my collected paraphanalia in a rotting Black Hole Bag.

I dont subscribe to the notion that you need to live at a skid level to get maximum enjoyment of what you are passionate about. Nor do I think that you need to work your ass off during your young years to have a pot of money in the end. There can be a balance. There IS a leisure class at both ends of the socioeconomic scale!

Thirteen years ago I was living in a hovel in Wilson, Wyoming and repping for life-link and picking up other jobs where I could. I have never boarded, fished, or climbed as much as in that three year period. I was incredibly broke but happy. like a previous post said you meet a girl, you buy a house, you have kids and before you know it your not the guy that didnt have a care in the world anymore and you are responsible for other peoples lives (sound familiar? Be ready for more cheesy climbing metaphors). You are quite off route from where you started but you adapt and settle in and make the new terrain work for you. Some days being in business for yourself is run out and frightening but the rewards are immense. Sorry to ramble (up with the kids, coffee brewing, on my way to a board meeting, but from 1:30 on-the afternoon is all mine!)

Teacher is also an option: livable (tho' low) pay, lots of time off - can supplement w/ part-time job during the summer if needed. But for the sake of the students and our society, don't go this road unless you really care about the students and their education.

Some schools & universities even have adventure ed programs, and of course employ someone to manage them.

--

If you don't care about your students and their education, then, IMHO, you have no place being a teacher anyway.

Are you saying you only get one day off in 2 weeks, or is it that you get weekends off, and then an extra day off every 2 weeks?
