I watched a german guy solo with a clove. He would give himself 10ft. of slack then climb to the next bolt and clip it. He would wait at that bolt and feed out 10 more feet then do it again...He moved pretty fast but it looked like a pain in the butt to feed the rope..

He you retard you need an ATC to belay. you can't belay with a knot, duh!!!!!!

Ya know one (of many)good things about the clove hitch is.

When I rope free solo(and aid} on bomber gear placments,I can tie a clove easy with one hand and my teeth,also on rapel,I can untie the knot with one hand.Also use it for my back up knots for the same reason.
