There was a pair of Prana pants I tried on yesterday that fit good, moved well, and looked good on me. The problem: they wew pretty much white. Now I currently own another pair of Prana pants of the same colour and I get disgusted at how much dirt and stains they show (will do you no good when you only want to bring one pair of pants for a three day climbing weekend). But those pants are cotton, and the pants I was looking at were some nylon/synthetic blend. I didn't buy the pants, based on the colour. Should I have given the colour a second chance? Am I the only one who thinks white/light beige is a stupid colour to make pants out of? Should I assume that it was probably non-climbers that bought the rest of the white pants leaving this one pair left on sale??

I am sure you are not the only one who thinks making pants that color is stupid. Also, I am sure that I am not the only one who thinks your reason for not buying them is stupid. No, non climbers are not the ones who bought the other pairs. I just bought a pair of light beige pants at a discount store. They are Nike and are some sort of light weight/stretch material. They are perfect for climbing, regardless of how much dirt they will show. As an added bonus, I paid $19 dollars for them.

I'm so glad I'm a male and don't have to deal with these dilema's, but if you ask me, if it's comfortable, wear it. If you wear them for climbing their going to get dirty.

The advantage of the light color is you won't get as hot when you're on the rock all day. I have nylon light beige pants and they usually just brush right off.

Is this some kind of troll?!! Everyone knows that white pants are the coolest! I wear mine on the most run out X-rated climbs I can find and now the seat looks like a brown Rorshach test.

Now everyone knows you can't wear Pradna white to the crag after Labor Day. Make sure to check the local ethics on crag wear.

 Maybe I should have been more specific in my question. The cotton pants I have stain and look like crap. I know you don't have to look great while climbing, but if I had my choice between wearing a pair of pants that look like crap, and a pair that looks okay, I'll wear the ones that look okay. So the question: My cotton ones look like crap. Would the synthetic ones look any less like crap after I put them through their paces?

I would guess that synthetic is going to stain also (and you can't use any bleach like you could with white cotton). However, I'm not too sympathetic either. I get annoyed as hell that almost all the synthetic climbing pants that I am interested in only come in black. It's just extra heat in the sun and doesn't keep you any warmer in the shade. (I guess I could try on the womans versions and see if they fit...)

I bought a pair of light beige pants for my climbing trip this last weekend and they got pretty dirty but I threw them in the wash right when I got home and they came out as clean as I could get em.

I got a pair of Tommy Hillfigure or however the hell you spell it shorts that are perfect for climbing. Long, nicely cut knees, and smiple. I paid $4 for them, and they are off white. And frankly, I think that that is a better color option because chalk wont show up, compared to some black cut offs that I wear. But really, what it comes down to it, who the hell cares, it's just climbing after all. I mean really, who the hell cares about us?

So the question: My cotton ones look like crap. Would the synthetic ones look any less like crap after I put them through their paces? Yeah, you should search the ladies' room threads on "white pants" if you want to see some serious discussion of the issue (and there has been a surprising amount). Don't get me started on the women's sport clothing rant... it's been done before. As demonstrated here, guys just don't get it. That being said, I find that synthetic pants do tend to hold up better in the long run, but they just don't get as comfy soft as a pair of cotton pants will. The answer to your exact question is probably something like "yes, synthetic would look less like crap." But you need to make your own pants-related decisions. Nobody else can do that for you. :-)

Those white pants may be better suited to yoga than to climbing. Butt you can still style it in the gym.

In reply to: guys just don't get it. Get what? But seriously, white pants outdoors is a bad idea. They will soon turn brown from dirt and mud and whatnot. But I do hear synths wash better than cotton! me thinks.

They will not get dirty and grungy in the same way that white cotton pants would. I say if they look great on you buy them! I can never find pants that look great on me. Just make sure you wash and dry them correctly (I hang dry all my synthetics).

Personally I'll give you props for caring about this stuff. Not that I do or necesarily appriciate women that do, but you probly crank harder than most of the people who don't care what they look like, so maybe you'll look better in pictures on harder climbs. The point is that synth holds up better, and there's no reason to argue with cheap. Besides which stains are sort of a building experience, they make people look more real. Which brings into the discussion the question of whether or not clothes make a difference in behavior. Might you send the climb faster in stainless pants? Are those stains holding you back? Both questions each of us must answer for ourselves.

Thanks for the answer outdoorsie of "white synthetic pants will look less like crap" :) . Maybe I should have thrown this into the ladies room, would have gotten flamed a little less. But it's character building, ya know  I'm not even going to try to reason to people why I even care what colour my pants are. I'm just going to point out that Prana would never stay in buisness selling the clothes that they sell if no body gave a feck about what they look like. How the hell else do they ever sell a single pair of pants for $60 +? No excuse me, I've gotta get back to being my beautiful self in my spotless (looking) clothes, prefectly even tan and my award winning smile http://mikopi.image.pbase.com/...7797984.DSCN0963.jpg

You could always dye the pants a different color! Every bit of prana clothing I own is 90% genius and 10% dumb-ass. The clothes are comfy, but they just don't pay attention to the details.

you're kidding, right? the clothes i use for climbing are the clothes that are too crappy to wear anywhere else. who cares if they are stained? the more beat up the clothes, the harder you're trying on the climb.
