Dfinitely not wallface or looking glass nc. whitesides is close. Original Route is approx. 800 feet. That's the route not the rock height. Haven't been to Looking Glass SC. Bad memory says cliff height was 1500' (?)

In reply to: I thought it was Cannon in NH. Could be wrong. Don't have the stats. I'll second that. And if it's not the tallest, it's close. Deffinitly as close to big wall as we get out east. Cheers, Jim

I think it's Crow Hill. or maybe that slab at hammond pond. No, It's definitely cannon. Cannon squeeks out about 1,000 feet at the "big wall" section of the cliff.

Everyone who lives in the North is gonna say Cannon. Everybody in the South is gonna say Whitesides. Looking Glass is definately not the tallest out East. I'm pretty sure that I read somewhere that Cannon is the tallest in the East. Whitesides is definately harder and scarier though.

I was climbing Moby Grape on Cannon in June '97(?) when a MASSIVE rock fall cut loose and destroyed 100 yards of forest, and the trail we hiked in on just hours before, depositing a VW sized block close to the parking lot, which must be 1/2 mile away from the wall...that was pretty fricken scary  scarier even than the runnout face climbing on whitesides  and trying to rappel down the traversing orginal route in a sudden thunderstorm... :o Whitesides does feel taller when climbing it, and i would agree that the north face of Looking Glass is the most "big wall" feeling for aid. Cannon is tallest in vertical drop, i would bet.

We, the Carolina Climbers Coalition, believe it to be Laurel Knob, NC. This gem is located near Whitesides, but is taller. It has low angle slab, steep watergrooved sections and a really overhanging central section. Last week the CCC signed a contract to purchase this nationally significant treasure, which has never been open to climbing. For more info or to make a tax deductible donation visit: Carolinaclimbers.org. :D

I just thought I'd put my 2 cents in. This is really quite straight forward. Cathedral is 600 feet tall at its tallest point, and it longest routes are about the same. Whitehorse Ledge is 800 feet tall and because of its slabby right side, its longest route (standard route) is 1080 feet. Cannon is almost exactly 1000 fet tall, and while I don't know the exact length of the Whitney-Gillman ridge, due to its angled nature, it must be a fair bit longer that 1000 feet. So, Cannon wins in this neck of the woods, and it is certainly the most big wall and alpine in the region (and I think is the only cliff in New England with genuine grade V climbs). I claim no knowledge of the climing outside of N.E.

I have no idea what cliff is tallest, especially taking slope (not just vertical rise) into account. But here's a related question: Which eastern cliffs have established grade V routes?

Dingus, While Table Rock SC is one on the most impressive walls in the east, the north side anyway, it is no where near 1000 feet. My guess is 600. The south side is in a state park and is seasonally open to climbing (darn birds!) but the north side rests inside the Greenville, SC water supply land and will never ever be open. I guess it is ok that hundreds of fish and mammels poop and pee in the water, but heaven forbid a climber a mile away may do so. I hear they have armed guards at the reservoir which is below the cliff. Homeland Security I guess.

It ain't open yet boys and girls. First we need a quarter mil. That is actually cheap for 50 acres in Cashiers. Send all donations to: Carolina Climbers Coalition POBox 33227 Raleigh, NC 27636-3227 Once we get it paid for, a trail cut and some anchor replacement done, THEN you can come and play.

Somone ventured earler that Whitny G on cannon was 1,000 ft. Not True. the WG ridge is fairly short. My guesss is about 600-700ft. It is on the short end of the cliff. Moby Grape however is 1,200 ft of climbing. Is this laurel knob place have a bunch of good rt's? I did not see it in the rt's data base.

The longest route is not what the OP asked for. He asked for the tallest cliff. The longest route that I know of is a complete traverse around Seneca. I don't have the book in front of me, but I want to say it is either 42 or 24 pitches. Someone else correct me please.

Not sure whether or not Cannon is the tallest. However, with 600 feet of vertical gained thru the talus field alone, it seems like you are 1000 feet off the ground 2 pitches into the whitney G!

Coolest thing with climbers acquiring LK is that with the cliff's adjacency to the Panthertown Forest, climbers will have a place to camp, fish for trout, ride mtn bikes, get scared, etc. ... 4 pages?! Obviously people are pretty excited....this offers the promise of being a very significant victory for the climbing community.

I am a devout cannon fan as the cliff is in my back yard. I cruised it one day with A Yos, Valley local who gave it the thumbs up and said "this is a real Cliff" but your knob down there in NC looks pretty fun as well. All depends on how many Rt's and what the featuers are, how good the pro is etc . If there are a bunch of good well protected routs I would love to check it out 8^) If it's just another run out scare fest why bother driveing 15hrs  there is pleanty of that crap to be had arround here 8^)

I see no one has mentioned the South Basin of Mount Katahdin in Maine. It definately can't compete for vertical height but I'm wondering if you include all the 4th class from the pond up through Pamola to the summit, it might be greater than 1,000 feet of vertical climbing.

Girdle traverses are for wankers on too much acid with too much time on their hands  many of them were put up on alchohol and drugs. That laural knob looks like a pretty decent sized cliff. will anyone pleeezzze answer my FCKN question about how many routs it has and if any of them have decent pro? Are there any decent lines waiting to be climbed? we know cannon has a ton of good rt's. to bad they keep falling off

Of course it has routes, estimates range between 40 and 70. Some are better protected than others. We plan on replacing all the old nasty bolts, some of which originally had bailing wire twisted to form hangers. There is room for a few new routes but, 1- they need to be done in proud NC ground up style and 2- you'll have to beat me to them! Send your donations today! :D

No long cracks on Laurel that I know of. It's steep slab and verticle face climbing. Routes were put up on lead with hand drilled bolts. Long run-outs are the norm in that style of climbing, so bring yo sac. There are some classic moderates on it as well that are well protected. If you haven't been climbing in NC, you should really come experience it. Proud climbing on bullet stone in some of the prettiest places you'll ever go. The CCC is also helping to purchase Rumbling Bald, granite with Yosemite style splitter cracks and features. The climbing season never ends down here, so bring it!

The CCC closes on this mammoth cliff next month! If you are kind hearted, love climbing on awesome granite and have a few tax deductible dollars to give to a nonprofit charity at the end of the year, NOW IS THE TIME!!! Go to www.carolinaclimbers.org for details on how to save this national treasure. So far we have received donations from: NC, SC, Georgia, Mass, Utah, Minnesota, Colorado, NY.... Thanks!

Well, the tallest Mountain east of the Mississippi is Mnt. Mitchell. So I would say that there are some decent cliffs on it, I'll let you know in person this May.

In reply to: this is rock climbing.com, not backpacker :D No decent cliffs on Mitchell, it is a heck of a hke though. only if you go down the powerline to the campground. i absolutely despise switchbacking across a powerline. you are wasting your time if you go this way. -Aaron
