Just wondering. I think it helps my climbing because I have to think of moves one-two- sometimes three times in advance. I am not all that good and I find it hard to find partners sometimes but I am surprised I dont see more chess going down at camp sites and figured I would ask if there are any other climbers that play.

Actually, I do enjoy playing chess, but suck really badly due to lack of practice (and natural talent). I have often thought climbing is like pool (billiards) for the very same reason. If you don't think 3 moves ahead, you very quickly find yourself in situations that are exceedingly difficult to extricate yourself from.

I used to play a hideous amount of speed chess on the Internet Chess Club, specializing in 1 minute 'bullet' matches. I quit after some anger related issues led to excessive mouse smashery... Allez. (smash, smash, smash) Homard.

i like playing, but i am out of shape. Years ago, while hiking annapurna circuit, we took a small chess board with us, and played at thorong la (5416m), to see whether lack of o2 will affect our play... well, we were running out of time, so we rushed the circuit, and because of that, 5000m hit me hard. so, i was barely standing upright, so the chess plan did not worked out. I have also seen two people playing mental-chess while hiking, that was impressive.

I really enjoy a good game of chess though I haven't played in a couple of years. My dad started all three of us (my two brothers and I) playing when I was in grade school. 8^)

We usually take a chess board to our climbs, it is a great way to pass the time whilst waiting to climb and is also good to do after a big climb. Not sure why I didn't think about bringing this up earlier.

Love chess, but hate the fact that my 7 year old beat me 7 times in the last 24 hours. I use to let him beat me to keep his confidence up!

I've played chess on and off for several years. I agree with the OP that playing chess helps your climbing by getting you to think ahead. I think it also helps with focus and concentration. Just like in climbing, a loss of concentration, and a few seemingly inconsequential decisions can lead to your downfall.

Gotta have something to obsess over. Gotta have something to obsess over. Gotta have something to obsess over. LMFAO! That should be my mantra for life. Thanks for the big smiles. My husband plays chess a lot and is quite good (so all his friends yell) and he doesn't incorporate that into his climbing. I've talked to him about loving the "puzzle" aspect of climbing and he didn't get it. Of course, he doesn't actually like climbing, but he likes to get to see me once in awhile so he does it. Maybe I should mention the chess thing and he'd enjoy it a bit more...

I've got a travel Chess set and play from time to time on trips. I've really taken a liking to Cribbage though. It's become my new fave.
