Let's face the hard facts here... this sort of American death is inevitable. We certainly shouldn't express surprise some old whacko shot an innocent kid over virtually nothing.

Since I was old enough to talk, I have been subjected daily with images of stylized violence and sex, as have most other Americans. From the old westerns (and the attendant 'real men' behaviors, strongly rooted in violence) that were the staple of reruns when I was a kid to the emergence of the 'ultra-violence' of the 70's (Dirty Harry, Shaft, Clockwork Orange, etc. etc. etc. to the graphics obscenities of modern times, Americans dig violence and indoctrinate our children in its culture.

We Americans are perhaps the most violent people ever to walk the earth. We are certainly top contenders. When we're not fighting other nations, we fight ourselves or merely pretend to (football and pro wrestling).

One of our main problems in Iraq is not the legacy of Saddam, its the legacy of 1000 years of religious and tribal animosity coupled with an atmosphere of violence. Saddam, in this view, is merely a product of his culture. How can we force others to stop the very same behaviors we ourselves perpetrate?

Is the only way to stop this sort of 'senseless' (it actually makes complete sense in the context of our culture) killing is to invite FAR MORE killing in its place?

If you try to pry the firearms out of the hands of violent Americans a bloodbath will ensue. You anti-gun folk need to acknowledge this as it is a fact... if you seek to take or remove firearms by force or law, from Joe Citizen's hands, a civil war will ensue.

It will.

Does that render the situation hopeless? With a powerful NRA lobbty willing to use dirty tactics to support totally unrestricted firearm access, the answer seems yes.

There is another way - education. Two fronts and I'll use my owwn personal example.

I grew up a gun afficianado, as my father before me. Guns were in our house, on the gun rack, out in the open and in use most nice weekends. We shot game and clay birds from the time I was old enough to point a 410. By the time I was 15 I'd already hunted more than most adults who consider themselves hunters.

I dreamed of owning pistols and shotguns and rifles. I dreamed of being in combat. I dreamed of being a man.

But coming of age I turned away from firearms. I don't own any now and haven't fired a weapon in more than a decade. I earned a marksman medal in the military because being a good shot is a lot like riding a bicycle (so long as you can see and your hands don't shake), but by then I'd already turned a corner.

I totally lost the will to hunt. And I turned away from gun worship in lieu of other toys... climbing toys!

Also, in the case of our daughters, and even with my parents, violence of any sort, any sort at all, is not tolerated in our house. We've tried to teach our daughters that NO VIOLENCE is warranted against them, for any reason, ever, by anyone, including their parents. If more of us were brought up this way, far less of us would purchase tickets to Dirty Harry movies, or Ultimate Fighter Pay-per-views, or any of the other million ways we teach our children to be killers.

Education, one child at a time. Old killers like this dude are already lost. An entire generation of inner city kids is already lost. Only through children, only through voluntary action will people surrender their guns.

If tomorrow the Fed declared all personal weapons illegal, my very first response would be to secure a handgun however. I'm not going to sit around in a civil war with a big target painted on my head without some means of defending myself!

Americans are violent, incredibly violent. That's the root here, not personal firearms.

The inherent problem with any attempt to reduce gun crime by restricting or banning the sale of guns is that it ignores the fact that a thriving black market exists for such 'goods'.

In other words, increased regulation of the legal sale of guns simply can't do that much good because the illegal sale of guns will continue relatively unimpeded.

The flaw in that logic is simply that law-abiding citizens are not likely to make illegal purchases of firearms.

That's the problem. Law-abiding citizens aren't the ones whose access to firearms needs to be restricted. Seems to me that gun related crime is generally perpetuated by the other type.

I agree with your comment, with exceptions. Although law-abiding citizens are less likely to perpetrate firearms crimes, they are, in some cases, more likely to react on impulse in certain situations - mostly from fear and confusion.

I believe that law abiding people should be able to bare arms, but not without thorough training and consequent certification.

AGREED!

I am not arguing that guns should be non-regulated. I am simply pointing out an often ignored weakness in anti-gun legislation.

Personally I find these movies to realistic for my kids. But I see the social issues in "Kill Bill" and "Kill Bill Vol. II" to be more rooted in cuurent day America...hopefully my kids can see beyond the graphic violence and become better ninjas......

I second everything that you said. I was an avid hunter, spent a tour in Iraq and two in Afghanistan. Now, I could never see my self owning a gun again. I am all for guns being legal in our country, I just choose not to own one. I have seen first hand what they can do to a person and I never want to be on the giving end of a gun ever again.

Yeah. We're "the most violent people ever to walk the earth". Sure thing.

A couple of follow on comments.

I think we are violent as a result of our European blood. I think European's were the former title holders but a thousand years of mostly continuous warfare has mostly beat the fight out of them. Those fighters who survived to breed were increasingly fewer especially after WW1 and 2. They done shot their wads (and their 1st and 2nd sons).

Africa? Hmm, very tough, but I focused on culture. America, for all its diversity, is much closer to homogenous culture than many of those other places you cite. I don't deny the violence, but tribal violence in Africa as a direct result of colonization is different. Arguably it was the introduction of European values that set it all up.

Mid-east? Point taken but once again the clash of western European values is the root of the current conflicts.

Soccor games? What EVER dude.

I think the Spartans subjected their children to a greater daily barrage of violence. I'm not sure any other cultures have, not like us. I believe the Iraqis are a very violent people however, as are the Afghans.

I just think we're better at it, s'all. The greatest warrior nation in history. A dubious claim to fame.

BAM!!!! Spot on Thorne.

Boon, you've once again made yourself look like an effing retard.

There's hardly (if any) a country or people who's history doesn't include violence and war. That's human nature. Are you saying because of the British's long history of shooting Frenchmen with longbows they are now obsessed with owning, carrying, and defending themselves with longbows. Your post about our wild west history is fucking derailed dude.

I never thought I'd say something like this, but with all your problems with America, why don't you take your unhappy ass back to Bosnia?

The fact is America is no worse than any other place on the globe and far better than others. You look at our trying times since the Civil War (Vietnam, Los Angeles riots, fires all over the country, political dissidence due to unhappiness with govt. leaders)it's amazing we're still here.

America is just like any huge power...we probably won't be here forever, that's a definite, but our stability is amazing when you compare it to another continent like Africa or Europe that have major changes in governments and leaders every couple decades.

Shutoff dude, and go somewhere you'll complain about less.

Oh yeah, BTW, that old man must having been friggin' nuts to be able to justify something that outrageous. I honestly hope he doesn't die peacefully in his sleep...a 15 year old kid, sheesh, that's sad man.

(Washington, DC) Although the exact number of Americans killed by gun violence in the 20th century will never be known, it is now all but certain that it will, by any measure, vastly exceed the number of Americans shot and killed on battlefields since 1900. In fact, more Americans were killed with guns in the 18-year period between 1979 and 1997 (651,697), than were killed in battle in all wars since 1775 (650,858). And while a sharp drop in gun homicides has contributed to a decline in overall gun deaths since 1993, the 90's will likely exceed the death toll of the 1980s (327,173) and end up being the deadliest decade of the century. By the end of the 1990s, an estimated 350,000 Americans will have been killed in non-military-related firearm incidents during the decade.*

The deathtoll for the American Civil War was around 600,000. I guess your numbers don't include those who died as a result of battle, but not in battle.

FWIW: A guy that we grew up with was blown away when his next door neighbor pressed a .44 against his chest at Purdue one night back in 85 or 86, because he was pissed that Craig and his roomates were having a party, and the psycho neighbor thought the music was too loud.

The guy got life, while Craig got death!

I found your site dingus.

Here are some interesting nuggets.
In reply to:
In 2003, 91 percent of African-American murder victims were slain by African-American offenders.
• In 2002, African-American males accounted for 47 percent of all homicide victims, while they only account for 6 percent of the entire population.

Playing around with these numbers can get pretty offensive, doncha think?

I don't know what he meant about the offensiveness of your post either, but it certainly disproves your "European blood = violence" theory.

I personally blame it on human nature, doesn't matter the culture, race or religion.

As I recall, one of his core messages is what you were saying - that American culture glorifies violence and instills a sense of fear in the public. He compares against Canada, which has a comparable ratio of guns-to-households (or something like that), but astronomically lower (though lately growing...) rates of gun violence.
