I've heard stories this year of entire tents/sleeping setups being stolen in Josh this year. In josh I often stay camped in a friends drive or more often
get a room somewhere and share with friends.

When I was in josh last year Gene and I arrived back in the hidden valley parking lot (the day he finally left) to find a white sedan parked there with the trunk open. I had rented the same model car so we went to take a closer look and thankfully it wasnt mine. Ten minutes later 2 older female tourists (the old hippy roadtripper kind, not the RV type) walked in and started flipping out.

It was their car and they thought they had been robbed. It turned out that they had left the trunk open all day, with their purses just sitting in the back. Each purse had several hundred dollars in cash, their drivers licenses, Passports, and pretty much everything else a traveler would have of value. They couldnt believe that they hadnt been robbed, but Gene assured them that there was no theft in the monument.

Im sorry to hear that Gene's statement isnt entirely true, since on my trip I didnt witness anything of that sort. In fact, everyone was really friendly. I arrived without knowing anyone in the area and having only pm-ed one person who was going to be there, and I met a bunch of really cool people that were totally chill with me joining their group. -ws

Kind of sucks that a portion of these were definitely climbers preying on fellow climbers.

Ok...for the dumbest thing ever, even beating the hippie road trip ladies.

One time on a weekday this winter, I asked the cool folks at Nomads if I could leave my truck in their lot while a friend and I drove into the park to climb so it would be safe. They said OK if it was in an out of the way spot.

When my friend and I returned to the lot after sunset, my lights were on. I was like "What the..."

As I got to the truck, I realized that I had left it running with the lights on and the doors locked. All day.

Anyway, I deserve to have had my rack stolen 10 times over for my own stupidity. I'm lucky it only caught up with me once.

Trophy for the bicycle lock idea, too.

-Kate.

yes out of the back of someone elses car (possibly unlocked) after loaning it to them. getting the money/gear replacement from those who borrowed it was a bitch. which led to my "no loan without a deposit = to value of gear" policy.

these stories are good for those who think locking your car in josh (or any other climbing area) is paranoid.

I had my van cleaned out in a move from Montana to New York in 2001. I was parked at a Motel 6 in Des Moines, IA. Renter's insurance covered replacement cost. At the time I was bummed, but got over it once I realized I could replace my old, worn out gear with shiny new stuff from the price of the small deductible.

I'm really glad now that I had my stuff stolen. I used to be a real gear-head; I thought that the gear made me a better climber. I would obsess over having the latest, greatest thing. Now, I realize it’s just stuff. Skill, passion and drive are what make people climb better. Gear is just gear. It really is not that important.

What do I do now to protect my gear? Uh, I live in Wyoming. I don’t bother locking my house or truck, let alone worry about my gear.

When I travel, I keep a low profile. No “hey, rob me” climbing stickers on my truck. I have a construction-grade aluminum topper that would be a b!tch to break into. I also try to bring as little gear as needed.

Forgive the drift here, but can't some of those U-Locks STILL be picked with the end of a Bic pen ???

In addition or instead of a bike U lock, a six foot steel cable (or chain) and high strength conventional shackle lock (abus or master discus-round style or any of the high end lock with a thick shackle) are very versatile to lock all kinds of things to all kinds of things. And its about the same prices as a good U lock. And put the biggest lock on your garage that the hasp (the steel sliding bolt with the hole) will accept.

Had everything stolen Dec 2005...A fews weeks later a climber was lowering off a route and fell to his death when the rope came-up short, I don't know if it was my gear but Karma is a Bit*h. So have this be a warning to those out there to take what is not their's.

I think it's really poor form to imply any link between these two events. The death of a climber (thief or not) is not something to be taken lightly. This is especially the case when you admit you don't know if it was even your gear. I see a lot of claims that thieves deserve to die, and that karma is a b----. Stealing sucks, but to wish death on someone over possessions seems entirely out of perspective.

I know this is horriable to say, but I can help but think it... my rope was 25 ft short, that was the distance of the fall. Something like 2 or 3 weeks after my gear was jacked.

I had some gear stolen out of my truck while I was climbing and I LAUGHED MY ASS OFF!

Here's why: First off, it wasn't much. I can't remember what all but probably totaled less than $50.

One item the banditos made off with (I laugh everytime I think of 'em using it) was an old, and I mean OLD 11mm mammut rope.

Not only was this thing probably 15 years old, it had served as a rope rug for my front door. After it got too nasty to be on the front porch, it became the cat box door mat. After years of use, it had become too gross. I unwove it (with gloves) and put it through a few cycles at the laundramat with some gnarly soap/bleach with the intent to make another rug. I just hadn't taken the rope out of my truck yet.

Climb on banditos!Laugh

With that bit of info, its nice to think that karma bit the thieves in the ass. In all probability, it was still just an ordinary joe who came up short luck wise.

I once forgot to lock my car and when I got back to it a door was open and someone had obviously rifled through my glove boxes and such. I had my rack in there along with a really nice sleeping bag, all my caving gear including ascending gear, lights, wetsuit, and other widgetry, one static rope, one climbing rope, odds and ends... A FORTUNE to replace. Lucky for me they only took the 7 pounds of change I had on my dashboard and a cd player that didn't work. The sigh of relief was HUGE. There was another car on my street that was locked and the window was busted out. I would agree with leave nothing in your car and leave it open. But I also really like the bike lock idea. I think my cable lock for my bike is now going to double as my "rack insurance" when on the road.

Also, excuse my ignorance, but what is USAA insurance? And how much would it cost per year to insure a rack that's REPLACEMENT value is a couple grand. My climbing and caving gear is by far the most valuable thing I own. Worth more than the car I carry it around in. I don't own a home, or much of anything for that matter. Can I still insure something?

If you don't own a house, you should look into renters insurance. It's usually very affordable (maybe $10 a month). Coverage will vary, but theft of personal property is generally covered. I heard from at least one rc.commer that had a denied claim, so it's good to discuss what you want covered by the policy in addition to replacement cost vs. actual value for items, the deductible, etc. Considering how quickly climbing and camping gear adds up, I always found it well worth the cost.

By the way, a quick web search shows that USAA is a financial company that serves current or former military personnel and their families.

A few months back my apartment got broken into just after I got back from a climbing trip.

All my gear was laid out in my room waiting to be counted, sorted, and packed away. We're talking a full trad rack, tent, sleeping bag, ropes, big wall gear, camera gear, everything.

When I walked into my room, they'd trashed the place looking for stuff to steal, and I couldn't find my rack or camera gear. I was so pissed. I took me about an hour to find my gear, as it has ended up in the bottom of the laundry pile (dirty from the trip). Seriously, what kind of thief looks through the laundry. My camera gear was also jumbled in that mess (undamaged) I think they didn't see the camera gear when they threw stuff on top of it right away.

We lost nothing essentially. Got away with some DVDs, our passports, and a couple bottles of wine. Compared to the loss of 5K of gear that was in the room, I was pretty pleased.

Thanks for sharing the stories and tips. I have renters insurance, but it had just lapsed when I got robbed due to the landlord not providing me or the insurance company with information they required --> If I'd lost my gear I would have been screwed.

Next year I'll be living out of a van, so it's good to know that Josh has a reputation for cars being stolen.

Much like tallnik's story, I once had my locked door kicked in while I was living in a shared house while someone was having a party there.

It was just before I had gone on my university graduation road trip and I had been collecting gear for months. Thanksfully they didn't touch my rack or any of my camping gear. I thought they had taken my camera, but I had luckly left it at my parent's place. They did get my wallet and my laptop and a variety of other little things.

In this room you had cross the room and turn on the lamp. I think it was too dark for them to see all the gear stored in the closet.

Didn't have renter's insurance, the girl who was having the party never gave me squat to relace it with (and the girl was my little sister BTW). But at least my road trip plans weren't derailed.

They left my camera there and about 400 dollars of other valuble stuff, im guessing they were bind or something to not take our generator.

Bravo on the bike lock/cable idea! While climbing, camping and trekking, I take an open-top Jeep. The only possible solution for me is to install steel boxes. Unsure Nothing lost to date, thankfully, but it's probably a matter of time. Btw- don't spend the top $$ for the boxes. They can be fabricated really cheap by anyone (friends, etc.) with a lick of welding skills.

Yes. I have had my entire rack stolen. Also a rope, two harnesses and two pairs of shoes. All in a pack, left at the top of a crag for around 15 minutes. I was at university at the time and couldn't afford new gear for ages.

I hope the culprits catch some horrible pecker withering disease and burn in hell for a very , very long time.

Yes,C4c, along with pins, ropes, tons of biners, several sets of ascenders, almost every bit of climbing gear I owned.
It's funny that you ask me a question on my post
I wrote almost a year ago. I had to go back to review what I wrote, because I didn't think I wrote that I stored mine next to the spare battery.

I guess that was your statement , and then the question you asked me right after, made
me blend the 2 sentences together.Crazy

I know one thing; I sure felt like I was RAPED!!!
