Maybe it's because I never wear shoes, not even if it snows, but it seems that a lot of people assume that climbers are liberal tree huggers. I hate it when people liter anything that isn't biodegradable I don't know if I would call my self a tree hugger, maybe just a granite lover. I also don't care too much for the whole organic stuff, and I could care less what I put into my body (as far as food is concerned) as long as I get out often enough to get my heart rate up. Am I a tree hugger? Are you? Are climbers in general more concerned about the environment, or just getting access to their crags?

Why is the moniker 'tree hugging hippie' used like its a bad thing?

Yes, I am a tree hugging hippie. I buy organic stuff not just because I care about what goes in my my body, but I care about the health of all the people who have to handle that stuff and I care about the health of our Earth in general. I support companies that give back to environmental causes, like Patagonia. I buy organic cotton clothing. I recycle blah. blah. blah.... Why? Because I think its downright selfish not too.

There's an interesting article in I believe its the April issue of Rock & Ice about the impact of global warming on some classic climbs. Quite illuminating for any climber who doesn't see why they should care about that environment.

That's my two cents.

i'm a climber....fuck with my climbing and i'll fucking kill you.....

does that qualify me for "tree huggin' hippie" status?

(we need a twitching-eye emoticon)

in general, yes, we're all geared more towards protecting the environment...one way or another....and the term for hippie is very broad and vauge.....i may climb, say dude alot, smoke pot and have long hair (+ hippie) but i also drive a big ass truck and listen to slayer (- hippie)

whatever....i maybe a hippie....whatever....doesn't mean shit to me...why should it....i buy organic....pffft....recycle...pffft....why not....it was the way i was raised and i'm glad i was...to actually give a fuck about the planet i live on

Haha, Ok, I guess you have climbing access issues. Don't sell your favorite crag as a new development or you'll burn the place down.

nah...I don't think most climbers are tree hugging hippies.

I certainly do think that we care about the environment and abhor littering and wasteful use of nature. At least "real climbers" do. I hate it when I show up to an all sport / newbie cliff and find it littered with tape and wrappers etc...Especially becasue I can't leave without picking it up...

I wouldn't call myself a "tree hugging hippie," I think that I fit into the category of environmentally aware. I'm not a conservationist, nor do I dance naked in the woods while distributing my love to the trees.

I'm a user. But with my use comes as little impact as possible.

F*&$ing A! Ed Abbey is my hero. Has been for years. And, yes, Ed is arguably the father of the modern environmentalist movement. My degree is in Environmental Science. Someday, I want to be a park ranger and smoke pot. But that's just how I roll. I like the crunchy granola image that climbers are portrayed. To me it illustrates that climbing is more than just a selfish, adrenaline laced pursuit that all of the non-climbers around me seem to believe.

I think moreover, however, climbers are typically lumped as 'hippies' because even as mainstream as climbing gyms are nowadays, climbing is still very much a fringe sport. Chris Sharma is not a household name as opposed to like some NFL turd. Resultant, the best climbers in the world are still, in essence, fringe dwellers; Those who live a more unstructured or itenerant lifestyle. And that's fine with me. It's the same way for professional skiers and surfers (with obvious exceptions). So be it. I don't really give a damn if climbing ever goes mainstream. The atmosphere and vibe of the climbing community is pretty cool to me as it stands.

Oh, and BTW, I'm in the Army; have been for the last 8 years. Voted for GWB and his abismal environmental record because Kerry sucked worse. There's a fine line out there, but you can be a 'hippy' and a professional, too

If you go barefoot in the winter. You may be Amish

The world is ours to use. Trashing it is poor resource management.

More than one small crag or boulder field has been found thanks to a clear cut.

Named a boulder problem after my MacC. chain saw" super easy "
and it was.

Tree Hugging Hippy has been given somewhat of a negative connotation, but yea, climbers, and people who recreate in the outdoors as a whole should be environmentally conscious. The world is ours to use, not ours to abuse, and if one boulder field or small crag has to remain hidden to prevent a clearcut, I'm all for it (that statement was fucking pathetic fishbelly, next time name a boulder problem after Bessy, your 2 tone rust encrusted 87 pickup truck, redneck).

I wouldn't label myself a tree hugger, but I am aware that the things I do and choices I make affect not only me, but the world around me. I buy from companies who give something back and lessen their environmental footprint (Patagonia, Black Diamond ect.), I try to buy food grown in a sustainable way, drive a low emission, high gas mileage vehicle, spend that extra 3 bucks on my electric bill to get National Grid to buy power from a renewable resource, switch to Compact Flurescent lightbulbs, ect, ect. There's alot you can do without even really trying, and yea, I've heard people gripe about how it's more expensive and blah blah, but if everyone gets on this, prices will drop.

Basically the point is that we, and by we I mean everyone, not just climbers, are living in a unsustainable way, and the bubble, sooner or later, IS going to burst. It is past time that people start leading a more examined life, and make the lifestyle changes they can. Especially people who turn to the outdoors to play. Like the Adirondacks? Acid rain caused largly by emmision output is slowly killing the lakes and wetland areas in the park. What about Yosemite? I remember a couple years ago hearing of a proposed plan to put an asphalt factory within park boundaries to make road expansion easier. The list definitly goes on...the point is these are the places we love, don't poop where you sleep.

Wow, didn't plan for that to turn into such a rant. Flame at will...

What is a hippie these days anyway?

People I work with call me a hippy cause I have long hair, lean to the left (although the reality is more complicated than that), support the legalization of buds and am generally a pretty decent guys who is nice to people. Since I spend my extra money on climbing gear and road trips, my clothes tend to be a bit threadbare, and I typically only have one pair of shoes that I wear till they have holes in them.

When I think of hippies, I think of the nature children at woodstock, romping naked through the mud without a care for anything but the moment.

As someone with a mortgage, two cars, three computers and a five year marriage I'm pretty sure I don't truly qualify as a "hippy," regardless of how much I recycle or how often I rail against right-wing politicians.

There are hippy climbers out there. IMHO they are the ones living out of their vans, migrating between climbing destinations, climbing year round and not even giving a damn that they don't give a damn about any sort of societal norms. There are not very many of these folks, but they are around.
