I have heard some really dumb questions about climbing...all from inexperienced climbers... that really make me laugh. I was in the gym the other day talking to my partner about a route we wanted to climb that weekend( a multi-pitch about 500 feet), a guy over heard me and asked how the hell we could have a rope that long. obviously only hit the plastic, and had no idea about sport or trad climbing. I wanna hear some funny questions you guys have heard, the ones we all asked when starting and now think are common sense questions. The ones that we look at the people with blank faces and think they are joking... you get the point... let em out

My partner at the gym says that my new webbing bod harness isn't going to be as comfortable as those spendy padded numbers. I think she might be pulling my leg. What do you guys think. Is she serious?!

not from a new climber, but a kid (probably around 13 or so) at the local crag the other day, while I was setting up a TR anchor: Are you setting up to go bungee jumping?? uhhh, almost.

The dumbest one I have heard is "what are the dumbest questions you have heard about climbing?" They come in threads about every three months and have 8 pages of the same questions. How about some dumb answers?

"Can I have your last beer?" I would have pissed myself laughing, if I had not already been pissing at the time. The nerve of some people.

One time when discussing climbing with my parents my mom asked "Why do you bother brining a rope along? Wouldn't that just pull everyone off the mountain if someone falls?"

I work in a gear shop, so I hear stupid shit all the time, here are some favorites: Refering to cams, "can I just hold one in each hand and climb up?" "do you guys sell gear for freestyle mountain climbing?" This question was met with snickers and fart noises. referring to crampons:"Are those cleats?" "Do you sell the bolt guns like in Cliffhanger?" "Does your mother know you do this?"

The funny thing is, some of these questions may not actually be that dumb.
In reply to: ...can I just hold one in each hand and climb up?"... This has been done!

I'd rather listen to some random dumb question than listen to some dude in the gym spray about how he was going to tackle a 500 foot multi pitch.

When racking all my gear at a friends house the night prior to a climb, one of his more intelligent associates stated "You climb 'dem rocks? That's a lot of shit. I thought all you needed to climb was a rope and a hook."

Anyone ever wonder if elitists from OTHER sports do this too? That is, sit around and talk about how much people that don't participate in their sport don't know about their sport? I certainly hope not... because if they did for say, swimming, then my girlfriend could certainly fill an entire thread by herself with the things that I DON'T know about swimming, and the dumb questions I've asked her. But then, that simply couldn't happen... after all... we're climbers!! We're so cool and elite! Steve
