Rebecca didn't want me upping my post count and getting trophies for her posts anymore so I am posting for her. She still doesn't have Internet access so I saved the pages from this thread on the computer and brought it in for her to read them. She typed up this message tonight.

Another update from the bedside. Today I got a visit from Mr. Brent_E, who brought me two more letters from RC.com supporters. I just wanted to let everyone know that this support is more than I could have imagined. My burning desire to get back into climbing is partially from the overwhelming support from everyone here (I got another postcard, a magnet, and some Godiva Chocolates....nearly orgasmed when I opened up the chocolates :P ). Knowing the amazing people here in this sport, and to be a part of this and the chance to meet such amazing people is more than enough to look forward to the next time I get out on the road on a climbing trip and hopefully hang out with some of the people from this site. You guys rock!

So about me (seeing as this whole thread is kinda about me)...I've been feeling stronger and stronger, I've started working with crutches this week, but I still have to practice more. I think I also noticed that they have reduced my pain meds....but I'm not really noticing more pain. In fact I've actually been feeling better and better...I totally feel like I'm on the mend. It'll be a while yet (I'm not even sure when they'll let me out of the hospital), but at least I have the desire. Brent has promised to bring me a MEC catalog next time he comes, so I'll be armchair shopping for a new harness and helmet. I would like to go through my gear to double check if I lost anything, but from Nathan's check it sounds like I'll have to get very little (maybe a nut or two, and some carabiners).

awesome rebecca!

i'm glad to hear that you are recovering well from you injuries! i can't wait to hangout with you and nate at the tower again.

As I am typing this Rebecca is being moved to St. Catharines General Hospital.

This has nothing to do with how good or bad she is doing. They have had her on a list for transfer when a bed opened in St. Catharines for the last week or more.

When I showed up to the hospital she had just got done working with P.T. They had her working on stairs with the crutches. Hopefully it won't be too much longer before they let her come home.

I remember laying at the base of a climb paniciking as the paramedics pulled out a knife to cut my harness off prior to loading me onto a strecher. Managed to convince the guy that my harness has adjustable leg loops... They still hacked up my webbing over my shoulders though.

Never met you but I am happy to hear your progressing so well each day there!

Another bedside post from Rebecca.

Thanks guys, but I'm not actually back on RC.com yet (soon I hope, I need to try to catch up with Brent's post count). Nathan has been hacking into my account and posting for me....the days would go much quicker in the hospital if they had Internet access for me to surf the Internet on my laptop. Yeah, the hospital life is getting pretty old, and pretty darn boring. But I know me, and if I was at home right now I'd be trying to do all sorts of things I shouldn't be doing, so I better just suck it up and let myself heal.

So I'm back in St. Catharines which makes Nathan's life a little easier, especially because he's going to have to move us out of our current apartment in a couple of weeks without my help. Bummer. I was just getting used to the other hospital, but now this new hospital has supplied me with a walker to move around my room again (totally sucks when you have to be wheeled into the bathroom). The reason I'm stuck in the hospital for so long is to let my fractured pelvis heal, but I'm sure I'll be using crutches for a while still when I get out. So we're going to see about getting another set of crutches this week, and I'll get back out in the hallway to build up my endurance (and keep my sanity by doing something physical).

Rebecca--Awesome news! Sounds like you are well on the road to recovery, and now stuck in hospital purgatory. The boredom knows no bounds. I've been there, so I can empathize. I had surgery a couple years ago and wasn't able/allowed to leave my bed. The best thing that a friend did was come up to the hospital with a bunch of silly entertainment magazines. The kind with the big glossy pics of movie stars. I was still so doped up that I couldn't read small print books without falling asleep, but I could look at color pics and have fun making fun of things with a good friend. Glad to hear you are at least mobile and recuperating. :D

Glad to hear you doing so well. I have been following your accident and subsequent recovery as have many other "Eurofreaks". Climbers from around the world all share a passion which bonds them and brings them together as a community. It's always a shame to hear of someone getting hurt doing what we all love, but I'm glad to see your story will have a happy ending!
Good luck fighting the boredom of the hospital. I know "cabin fever" can set in pretty fast, but you gotta give your body the downtime that it needs to heal properly. Thanks for updates; and my best wishes for a speedy return back to a life filled with many more climbs.

What I wrote to Black Diamond:

In reply to:
Black Daimon Customer Service/Marketing:

An acquaintance of mine recently had a serious lead fall in which she fractured her skull among other injuries. She clearly would have died had it not been for her Black Diamond Half Dome Helmet. For details see the following thread at RockClimbing.com: http://www.rockclimbing.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=116793&start=0

I heard somewhere that when a hard hat saves a construction worker’s life, the construction worker is traditionally given a gold coloured hard hat to ware after that, so that whenever you see a construction worker waring a gold hard hat you know his life has been saved due to warring protective head gear.

I think it would be a really nice gesture, not to mention an excellent public relations/marketing move, if Black Daimon were to award Rebecca with a golden helmet. I would think the good publicity would be worth a lot more than a half dome helmet and some gold spray paint. Just look at the number of climbers who posted well wishes on the thread about Rebecca’s accident. The golden helmet would be an ongoing advertisement that half dome helmets save lives. I am sure Rebecca would appreciate the new helmet and the climbing community would be touched by the gesture.

To see a photo of Rebecca in her BD Half Dome helmet about a week before her accident go here: http://www.pbase.com/granite_grrl/image/63556900

Response from Black Diamond:

In reply to:
Teth,

Thank you for writing and sharing the story. We are glad to hear that Rebecca was wearing a helmet, and we would like to wish her a speedy recovery. We also appreciate your efforts to better inform people about the need to wear a helmet when climbing, it is good to see a positive and supportive response to your post.

A Golden helmet is very thoughtful gesture and a nice idea. Unfortunately, we do not manufacture a gold helmet and painting an existing helmet can compromise it's strength. With those considerations, we can instead help Rebecca by offering a discounted price on a new Half Dome when purchasing a replacement. She is welcome to contact us directly at 801.278.5533 or bdmo@bdel.com at her earliest convenience.

Thanks again for writing, and please let us know if you have any questions.

Regards,
Michael Lary

Well, Rebecca, at least I was able to get you a discount. :)

Cheap-o's, they should have gone for the golden helmet! That would have been cool. Even if she couldn't wear it, it would be cool to put up on the wall!
