Great job Teth. Now if you could work on getting me a set of cams that would be really cool. Seriously though that is awesome.

indeed, Teth!!! :D nice of you to go through the effort. I'm suprised that BD didn't just at the opportunity to give Rebecca something, but a discount is cool too!!!

well done!

Thanks Teth.

I really can't blame BD. If they gave her a free helmet then everyone would be falling, hitting their head, and spending a week in I.C.U. just to get a free helmet.

That helmet was getting close to retirement anyway.

.....but imagine the amount of golden cams they could be asked to dole out.

They wouldn't have an excuse with the paint job on that one.....

It's cool that they offer a discount though. IMO.

For the amount of money hospital stays cost, you'd think they would provide a fecking laptop and a wireless modem! Glad to hear from you in any case, granite_grrl.

What I wrote to Black Diamond:

In reply to:
Black Daimon Customer Service/Marketing:

An acquaintance of mine recently had a serious lead fall in which she fractured her skull among other injuries. She clearly would have died had it not been for her Black Diamond Half Dome Helmet. For details see the following thread at RockClimbing.com: http://www.rockclimbing.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=116793&start=0

I heard somewhere that when a hard hat saves a construction worker’s life, the construction worker is traditionally given a gold coloured hard hat to ware after that, so that whenever you see a construction worker waring a gold hard hat you know his life has been saved due to warring protective head gear.

I think it would be a really nice gesture, not to mention an excellent public relations/marketing move, if Black Daimon were to award Rebecca with a golden helmet. I would think the good publicity would be worth a lot more than a half dome helmet and some gold spray paint. Just look at the number of climbers who posted well wishes on the thread about Rebecca’s accident. The golden helmet would be an ongoing advertisement that half dome helmets save lives. I am sure Rebecca would appreciate the new helmet and the climbing community would be touched by the gesture.

To see a photo of Rebecca in her BD Half Dome helmet about a week before her accident go here: http://www.pbase.com/granite_grrl/image/63556900

Response from Black Diamond:

In reply to:
Teth,

Thank you for writing and sharing the story. We are glad to hear that Rebecca was wearing a helmet, and we would like to wish her a speedy recovery. We also appreciate your efforts to better inform people about the need to wear a helmet when climbing, it is good to see a positive and supportive response to your post.

A Golden helmet is very thoughtful gesture and a nice idea. Unfortunately, we do not manufacture a gold helmet and painting an existing helmet can compromise it's strength. With those considerations, we can instead help Rebecca by offering a discounted price on a new Half Dome when purchasing a replacement. She is welcome to contact us directly at 801.278.5533 or bdmo@bdel.com at her earliest convenience.

Thanks again for writing, and please let us know if you have any questions.

Regards,
Michael Lary

Well, Rebecca, at least I was able to get you a discount. :)

Teth

wow, kudos to BD for dodging the bullet so nicely. they even make you feel good when they turn down your request for free custom gear.

though i do like the idea about a golden helmet. maybe it could be a feature on this site. every user that was saved by a helmet gets a golden helmet on hes profile.

glad youre doing ok, rebecca.

It's soooo good to get back to this thread once in a while and hear about the progression. Rebecca, you definitely rock! (And forgive your father for the scrabble... just make him wait another 50-60 years  ).

One would have thought that bd was able to figure something out with golden foil or such. A discount's lame - but still better than nothing :D
And Rasto's idea is aewsome! (We might even consider giving Majid an honorary one  )

Good vibes from right across the big blue bathtub!

That would be great on the adjacent medical equipment. It would end the overcrowded hospitals problem

A foil covered helmet? While that does indicated a concern for safety (especially privacy), it may be the wrong message

Rebecca has been moved to the Shaver Rehabilitation Clinic. We are really in the dark about how long she will be there for. We have heard anywhere from a few days to three weeks.

As far as the helmet goes. I have friend connected to BD who has taken care of it (not a gold one but any other color they have). I don't know if he got BD to kick one her way or if he is paying for it. Regardless it makes me feel warm and fuzzy. :D

We got some good news today. It's only for the weekend (how that works I don't know) but Rebecca should be coming home this Friday. She won't have to be back until Monday evening. :D

If all goes well when she is home she will probably be sent home for good next week.

She still has a long way to go, but she has come so far already.

Its good to here that rebecca is doing well, that is awesome news.

As for the gold helmet, I would be willing to airbrush one with the imput of the members of RC.com. All I would ask is some small donations to cover the cost of the helmet and shipping. If anyone is interested or has an idea of what they would like to see painted on it feel free to PM and we can further discuss this.

As admirable as the idea is you should definitely not paint a helemt. Refer to the manufacturers recommendation as outlined in a post about 5 or 6 up from this one. BD does not recommend painting helmets as it compromises their strength. If you painted one and it was involved in an accident then you may be partly or wholly held liable. That would be a bad thing.

Which, in Canada, is nothing. Socialised medicine and all that, dontcha know?
Also, the idea of trying to get swag from companies because someone got hurt but survived is, imo, kinda creepy.

On that note, Rebecca, I'm really glad to hear you're doing better.

I understand that the solvents in the paints would effect the impact resistance of the plastic. When ever I paint a helmet I remove any CSA , DOT or CE stickers and tags that come with the helmet. I also inform the customer, in writing that painting the helmets means they are no longer covered under insurance or warranty. You wear the helmet at your own risk. The helmet I want to paint for Rebecca would be for show only I am even willing to fasten the helmet to a plaque of some sort.

That would work and I would definitely support that concept. Nice work around for the liability issues mate. Fastened to a plaque is the go I reckon. That way there can be some wordage associated with the golden helmet. I like it a lot.

Regarding the golden helmet, why not cook up a golden slip cover over her new helment, this way she can climb and have "visible from space" helmet...

lots of gold spandex out there at fabric stores. Think... figure skating and ballet!

that stuff would make a tight helmet cover. Heck, you could make one for every occasion... halloween, christmas, valentines, etc.

Way to Go Rebecca! What a good Idea we all just came up with! and you can be our test subject to see if the trend catches!! haha

BTW.. please come say hi on the CEC forum.... we all miss you there!

We had em in the Marines, why not climbing? :D

You could make them like shower caps. As a matter of fact, why not get that krylon plastic paint stuff and paint a shower cap gold and stick it on a helmet? No loss in safety, and it'll be gold!
