Today at about 10:00am Rebecca (aka granite_grrl) fell at Mt. Nemo in Milton, Ontario. I don't know all the particulars about the fall, but I do know she fell while placing a piece and hit a ledge on her way down ending 40 feet from where she slipped. I don't know if any gear ripped; i don't know if the last piece she clipped ripped/failed/never got clipped; I don't know how far she fell until she hit the ledge. I do know that she is in intensive care in a hamilton hospital with a broken femur, a fractured skull, a collapsed lung, and some other injuries. She was wearing a helmet, which saved her life according to the officer at the scene after the accident.

Those of you who know Rebecca also know how compassionate, strong, and how great of a friend and person she is. Those who don't can take my words as a testament to these qualities. What I would like and the reason I started this thread is for people to show your support for a fallen friend in her time of need. Any kind words or encouragement I'm certain she will be grateful for.

If you have more questions about the accident, please PM me and if there is enough interest I will start another thread to address these issues. I will say that i was not present and have acquired all of this information third hand from her belayer and I will do what I can to answer questions.

Thank you all

Brent Elliott

Wow... terrible news. I've never met granite_grrl, but she has been such a huge presence within these forums that I needed to come into this thread to learn more. I hope she recovers fully and quickly, and has the courage to continue such an active participation in this sport which has obviously been a huge part of her life.

Brent - thanks for the info. Please keep me up to date on her progress (either posting here or via PM). I only wish I could do more from out here but at least let her know my thoughts are with her.

Rebecca - you better shape up quick and read this soon
You know I'm looking forward to seeing you out here soon and climbing together again so you be good eh girl and get your innoculation against my bad jokes while they have an IV in you.

Nate - give her a little TLC, and look after her.

Seriously though, all my best wishes for a full and speedy recovery.

Very sorry, hope the best. It would be nice to have some more details of the accident posted for others to learn from. Did a piece come out, was the climb hard to protect? Was it a comfortable climb for her, or towards her limit? Had she done it before, etc.. whatever you think might help educate others.

I had a friend like that pass away three weeks ago. not a climber but very pasionate about sports and life always had a smile on his face! A great guy never once during the entire time i knew him was he a jerk... only 16 years old died in a car crash not him driving  . But you are in my thoughts and sending the good energy to you miss and all of your friends I know its a hard time... but you'll pull through sound like a very strong woman!
Good luck with your speedy recovery to get back on that granite.

With all respect, I believe the purpose of this thread is simply to show support for Rebecca and family. Perhaps we can leave the analysis to later and allow Rebecca to make a report IF she so chooses. Recent postings on this site in relation to another friends accident lead me to feel the climbing communties desire to analyse personal accidents should be secondary to privacy considerations.
Please keep this thread to well wishing and allow Rebecca the courtesy of choosing to analyse the accident or not in a thread she starts for that...
Thanks mate.

Hang in there Commander. If you heal as strong as you climb - you'll be healed in no time.

Hoping for a speedy recovery.

Many prayers for Rebecca ... for a speedy and complete recovery. And blessings for the selfless responders who helped get her to definitive care.

Please keep us updated on her condition by adding to the first post of the thread. If it were I who was injured, I would want people to know how I'm doing.

What a shocker! I was just reading Rebeccaís posts on ClimbEasternCanada about how great here Develís Rock trip was, and then I read this!

I know Rebecca fairly well and I climbed with her more than once before she moved to Ontario.

Rebecca, I have always admired you for being one of those people who make climbing a lifestyle rather than just a pastime. I only know a handful of women who are so committed. I suppose that this sort of setback can sometimes be part of that lifestyle, but so is fighting your way back to good health and getting back on the wall! These next few days are the crux, then itís all 5.7 to the finish. Your too determined not to make it! Iím rooting for you, and so are all the rest of us here in Halifax.

Very sorry to hear of the accident.

Since it's reality now, I hope Rebecca can make the best of it in some way that I can't imagine. I know a few accident victims who say they learned and grew in invaluable ways. Seems like blasphemy but since it's your life, I hope you can look at it as a challenge, opportunity, lesson, and connect with all the love that's coming your way.

peace and love

Thank you again, everyone. I will get these messages to her as soon as i can.

and update:

Rebecca went in for surgery on her leg and they put a drain in her head to relieve the swelling. She has come out of surgery and is now in stable condition. This is, thus far, the only other news that I have recieved from the hospital. You will know more when I know more.

Rebecca, Nate, our thoughts are with you.

Bad news indeed. A drain means a pretty serious head injury so our fellow climber will likely need our continued support for a while. I trust she will make a full recovery and I wish her nothing but the best from the bottom of my heart.

Though I've seen her at the gym, I've only really met her once and hardly said more than 'hello'. We were actually going to head up to Lion's Head on the weekend, but she ended up having to work part of Saturday so it didn't work out. Odd how events turn.

It seems like there should be a lot to say, and maybe there is, but not much seems worth saying right now other than that something terrible has happened and there's not much I, or anyone else can do to undo it. All I can do is give my best wishes for better days to come; I sincerely wish it could be more.

Thanks everyone for all the kind thoughts during such a difficult time.

I was with Rebecca belaying her when this unfortunate accident occured. I'm sure everyone is wondering exactly what happened, so without getting into too much detail, She basically took a bad fall while on lead, and struck a ledge before the rope came tight and finally caught her. I'm not too sure what caused her to fall in the first place, from where I was it looked like she had good footing on big blocky terain. I'm guessing that maybe one of her feet slipped while she was preparing to place her next gear. As she fell I just remember pulling in slack as fast as I possibly could, hoping the rope would tighten up before she got to the ledge.

It's an absolutely terrible feeling to see something like this, knowing there's nothing more you can do.

I was with her the whole time once we got her to the ground, as we waited for the EMS to arrive, just trying comfort her, and keep her still. Again, it's such a horrible feeling to see someone in so much pain, and not being able to do anything.

The amount of strength and courage it took for Rebecca to pull through really shows the kind of person she is.

Out of respect to Rebecca, I'd rather not get into too much more detail. If/when she chooses to share her experience, I think she'd like to do it in her own words.

Brent - Thanks for keeping us updated, my thoughts and prayers are with Rebecca and her friends and family. As I've said before, please let me know if there's anything else I can do.

I hope to see you soon Rebecca,

Sincerely,

Colin

I am looking forward to maybe making a trip east in the winter to climb some of that ice. Hopefully she will be there to climb. I will say a prayer to the Buddha tonight for you Rebecca.

All the best to Rebecca. I know her only on the Climbeasterncanada.com forum. My husband and I were going to meet for climbing/coffee this weekend as well in Lions head but as earlier stated, she had to work. She is one tough cookie and is always so positive and happy on the forum. I am going to send as many strong vibes as I can to her and her husband/family/friends.

Colin, all the best to you too. Being the Belayer for a bad fall is a hard job. I've been there. Stay strong. Rebecca needs you there for her.

lots of love and thoughts

Its always heart-wrenching to hear of these accidents... particularily when its so close to home. I've never had the fortune of meeting granite_grrl but she has an excellent reputation around the crags.

My hope is that she'll recover from this experience with a renewed inner strength and vigor for her climbing passion.

Heal well!

Again, many thanks to all the kind words you have written here. I printed all the posts up to page 7 and brought them to the hospital for nate to read and for Rebecca to read when she can.

Update on her condition:

I went to see Rebecca tonight, as stated. The injuries she has suffered are a broken femur, which has been pinned together; some broken ribs, a collapsed lung, which has re-inflated (pardom my lack of proper terms); she has a cracked pelvis, as well; a head injury (she now has a tube in her head relieving pressure, and some other cuts and bruises. Talking with Nathan he told me that the doctors scanned her brain and said that there is no sign of trauma. This is the news I was waiting for. However, the doctors also said that they have had people with no signs of trauma come out with problems. We can hope that they are correct in saying she will be fine. Other than that, she is sedated due to the pain and on a respirator to assist with her breathing. She doens't like the tube that is giving her air, though, as she's tried to take it out on her own. She's such a damn fighter.

This is all i know as of monday at about 9PM. I tried to tell Nate of all the PM's and well wishes that have been sent his way and hope I got most of them. He is doing better now that he knows what is happening, and Rebecca's parents have flown in and are by her side. Thank you for all the support, again. I'll keep everyone posted.

and Colin,
thank you for posting. You are doing the right thing to not bring any more details here. I think we can leave that for a while. I appreciate everything you have done for me and others, as well. Thank you.

Sorry to hear about what sounds like a nasty accident. I'm glad that the people immediately involved were able to keep their wits about them enough to perform a rescue and get the injured party to EMS.

Good luck granite_grrl, on the long difficult road that lies ahead. Know that many are standing behind you wishing you the best of luck.

Sending out my positive thoughts. Hoping your recovery is a speedy one, Rebecca.

So, any info on the fall? I climb at Nemo often and would like to know what happened...from someone who was there if possible. The initial reports of a broken rope sound unlikely to be true. Perhaps someone with info can start another thread to preserve the integrity of this one as a "get well soon card" thread.

Best,
Mike.

I agree a new thread should be started when the time is right. I will leave it to those who were there to make that decision. In the meantime, the following info was posted earlier in this thread:

In reply to:

Sincerely,

Colin

At this point, let's all be thankful that her recovery has thus far shown many positive signs.

I send my best wishes to Granite_grrl and her family. It's never nice to here about things like this, it really puts the true dangers of our sport into focus. It's easy for some to forget that even if you do your best to be safe and do everything right, things can still go wrong.

Iím not sure if Rebecca will remember me, but I certainly remember her. You always remember the person who takes you climbing for the first time.

Perhaps a year and a half ago I posted some self-pitying drivel on these boards, the exact content of which escapes me now. I had been climbing in the gym for less than a year, my regular partner was abroad, and I was climbing with some gym folk whom I felt really uncomfortable with. I was dying to get outside but had no one to do it with.

Enter Rebecca. She didnít just post encouraging words -she went one step further and invited me climbing. So, thanks to Rebecca, on a day in early spring in 2005 I went climbing outdoors for the first time ever. I carried two backpacks (yes, for a single afternoon in Milton, please donít ask me why), wore inappropriate blue jeans and balked at a tiny 5.0 traverse type thing on the approach. Rebecca took the whole thing in stride and was very encouraging. She was patient, very safe, and took care to ensure that my first time out was a positive one. And it was, I had tons of fun. After that first experience, I couldnít wait to get out there again and again.

Since that day, Iíve climbed on three continents (here, Africa, Asia). You will certainly not read about my exploits in any of the climbing mags, but Iíve had a lot of fun.

Thanks Rebecca!

Itís a pretty small, perhaps insignificant story, but it meant a lot to me. Though I only met her once, I would guess that it says a lot about Rebeccaís character, especially in a sport that is not often kind to newbies. I returned to Canada a little while ago and saw an entry in my cell phone book called ďRebecca RockĒ and thought, ďI should contact her and tell her how much I appreciated that one small act.Ē Iím doing that now, of course wishing the circumstances were different; hoping late is better than never.

So Rebecca, I am writing to say ďGet well soonĒ and to let you know Iím sending healing vibes your way, but also to send you and your family a warm-hearted story of just one of the (Iím sure many) people youíve positively influenced in the climbing world. I hope it makes you feel good to know that youíre appreciated.

See you at the crag,
Cara

Update on Rebecca's progress.

I thought I would give Brent a break and give this short update to let everyone know that Rebecca is progressing well.
Today she was able to open her eyes and look at me, acknowledge me and squeeze my hand so hard I thought my fingers were going to break!
It is very likely that the breathing tube will be able to be removed tomorrow.
Comparing how she was on Sunday to how she is now is a true picture of what kind of fighter this girl is and how strong she is, not only in body but in mind. I have told her that everyone in "our climbing community" is sending their good thoughts and wishes. Keep them coming.

Thanks for the call and the update, Kelly. this news has made me so happy. And I will take the opportunity to thank you for helping Nate and Rebecca's parents on here, as well. You deserve some recognition for all that you've done to help our friend, and I thank you.

To noisymonkey,
Rebecca has taken out a newbie on more than one occasion. We actually met on rc.com, and I am grateful that we did as she has been a good friend and will continue to be!!!

Thanks to all that have responded, again. It's a beautiful thing to see this.

Best

I've seen Rebecca a couple of times in Kentucky and most recently this spring at Bon Echo. I was very saddened to hear the news of this accident. I'm glad to hear that she's making such good progress.

Brent or Kelly, could you send me a PM if you know where we might be able to send flowers or cards. I've been in contact with a number of people who know Rebecca and many were hoping to send her something to let her know we're all thinking about her.

If not, just let her know that Will, Derek, Kit, Rob, Sue and all her friends in the ACC send their best wishes for a speedy recovery. We all want to see her back at Bon Echo soon.

Rebecca is doing as well as can be expected. I don't have time to go into details but she is making good progress already in her recovery. It is still far too early to know the extent of the damage done to her brain but so far so good. She has been able to do eveything she has been asked to.

Thank you

Hello Everyone,
I got to see Rebecca last night (Wednesday july 26th). Nate, Alison, and myself walked in to see her to find she was without her breathing tube, without the neck brace, and as awake as she could be with the amount of drugs she's on(Nate, of course, was aware of these changes). When Nate asked her "who's here" she looked and said "hi Brent," although she couldn't really see Alison very well. Her voice is still really weak, which i assume is from the breathing tube (it came out wednesday morning). Nate tells me that they took the tube out of her head and that it never really got used as her brain didn't swell enough, so this is a good thing. She is still in a lot of pain, and I presume she will be for a long while, but she is so strong. That is about all the information that I have now.

Keep fighting, Rebecca. All your friends are pulling for you.

On another note: we are going to go to the accident site this saturday to see if we can get a handle on what potentially happened. However, don't expect another thread to be started regarding this aspect of the accident. Until Rebecca gives her consent and input, we don't want to speculate and start a thread like that.

Thank you to everyone who has given information to me. Alison, Clint, Grant, and Rebecca's friends from around canada who have PM'd me. Thanks to John Long for his gracious generosity.

I'll update again soon.

Brent

I love smilies and this sums it up great. Thanks for the good news Brent but don't expect her to lighten up on the flames when it's time to start posting.... at least she'd better bloody not  We have another thirty odd pages to do

To Rebecca's family and Nate, I hope this thread and all the people who have sent well wishes have been a little comfort. Rebecca, re-read it from time to time as you fight your way back to fitness and draw strength from it. I look forward to the day we can rope up once again.... on ice even. :D

Great news!!!

I think darkside has it right, it will be a long road ahead of you, but it is one you are clearly strong enough for, and you have a lot of people who will do all they can to help in every little way possible.

If you feel like doing some of your rest and recovery in sunny bananna-land instead of cold, cold-ass Canada let me know, it will be a pleasure to have you guys down here.

I've chatted with Rebecca at Bon Echo in the past, and she is one incredibly personable, and intelligent woman!

Get well soon Rebecca... my thoughts are with you. Your strong, you can do this.

Wow, I saw this kinda late, I don't usually look at the accidents forum very often. Sounds like she's going to be okay. I don't know her, but she'll be in my prayers.
