 Nothing gets me raging like stupid gaper taking pictures of me when I am cruxing out or not even doing anything cool! I climb a lot in corbet's couiler at the top of the tram in jackson WY.(I live at the base of the tram) It is awesome climbing but large amounts of people can walk down to the cliffs edge and witness the sessions. Stop taking pictures! We don't want to be displayed in some weirdo's photo album. I feel like one of the poor moose who is just trying to eat and people gape all over it. Am I being a bit touchy or would you get equally mad at the gapers doing their job:gaping.?

Its nothing new to me. The crag I climb at is 10 minutes walking distance from the center of the city, and its in a park next to a biking/walking trail. We constantly have atleast 10-15 people watching us and taking pictures when we climb. It doesn't bother me, it actually helps when chicks are looking at you and you're at the crux...falling is not an option.

You're being a bit touchy. Maybe you should tell them you're Amish. Or wear a t-shirt that says HEY FUCKFACE on the back. That might work.

Try a couple hour drive and a three or four mile approach. I find it cuts down on the gapers.

Fling poo at them and jerk off constantly while at a belay. Sort of like the monkeys on display at the zoo. :D

I know what you mean, I've found my self climbing at a couple of tourist destinations this summer, Devils Tower and Garden of the Gods both have really high touron populations. It does strike me as weird that they would take a picture of me on an easy 5.6 route, and I wonder what they say when people are looking at their pictures after their vacation, but don't let it get to you, or enjoy it, you're doing something that most people only take pictures of and talk about, but never choose to experience first hand. I think the annoying part is on the ground when they want to talk to you and ask you questions, but usually they don't take too much time, and it's good press for climbers and climbing if we are friendly with the tourists, I think. If there's an access issue, we're more likely to get their support, or atleast not have them against us if we take a minute and talk to them. If you don't want to, you can always just not make eye contact, or feign not understanding any languages they speak.

If all else fails, go for climbs with nice long approaches, I heard that the tourons in the bugaboos aren't too bad.

you could also take a picture of the picture takers, and have a long aesthetical discussion about art

That's how I've always seen it. I remember being at Devil's tower when I was like fifteen years old and had only had my very first climbing experience a few weeks before at scout camp. All these "cool" climbers were there. Then, many years later, I was at Devil's Tower, coming down off Durance, and some kids started asking us questions. One of my partners was kinda short with the kids and walked off... I was like, "Dude, I WAS that kid."

I know it gets old, but I always look at it like a sort of fecked up badge of honor... "I'm doing something so incredibly cool that perfect strangers want to take a picture of me and show their friends..."

Get over it. First...climbing in Corbets? Would you be so tweaked if they were shooting you in the winter hucking into it? It is a destination resort after all. Are you too lazy to head to some of the real stone that your area has to offer? I know for a fact that the only time I would be even slightly perturbed would be if I was tr'ing like a champ or getting spanked on a moderate. So which is it?

Okay, Okay so maybe that is the problem... I should just go to a far far away place and climb! However, I climb at corbet's on the 4 days that I have to work up there. My other 3 days, I am not complaining. I am way out of the gapers reach deep in the Tetons. I do like the flinging poo and the fuck face t-shirt idea! P.S. next year I won't be complaining about the gapers up there since the tram is leaving us.

Climb harder! If you have time to notice that someone is taking picture of you while you are working htorugh a crux, then either you need to focus better, or the route is too easy for you :)

I couldn't care less if a picture of my butt somewhere up on the cliff will show up in someone's photo album. Most likely they wouldn't want to put it there anyway b/c the cliff picture will be prettier without me in it, and I would be prettier if I weren't an indistinct dark blur the size of a thumbprint in their photo.

I'm completely with foeslts16. The one here who needs to get over their problem is you. There is nothing in either regulations or good manners that says people shouldn't look at or take pictures of something that is unusual or interesting to them. Climbing is a very peripheral activity, and a person can be both intelligent, or even brilliant, in any number of areas of life that actually matter, and be completely unfamiliar with climbing. What kind of unaware dullard who had not seen climbers before would not find it at least a bit interesting for a few minutes?
You remind of some of the people I knew in earlier times in my life who went out of their way to have hair and clothes that made them look as absolutely freakish as possible, and then constantly complained or acted offended whenever someone seemed to notice them.
My bet is that you enjoy whining about and feeling superior to the tourists, and would miss it if you didn't have it.

If you don't like the "gapers" taking pictures of you, go somewhere else.

You know it's a big tourist spot; be accountable for your own actions.

Climbing El Matador on Devils Tower I was aware of some tourists watching my progress. It was my first time at the Tower and not being very good at crack climbing I was slow to climb. I also had very few pieces that fit the crack so I was leap frogging gear.
After finishing the first 3? pitches we rapped off and made our way back to the parking lot. Some foreign tourists walked up and asked if we had been the climbers on El Matador. I proudly exclaimed that yes we had done the route. The tourists then got a puzzled look on their faces and asked why it had taken so long to climb the route. They then mentioned that we were very slow climbers. Well, that let the air out of my ego! I did mention that I was the slow lead man and that my belay partner climbed much faster than I did. Oh well so much for being a 'stone master'.

They aren't taking pictures of you. They are taking those shots home and editing you out with photoshop. Who wants a picture of your butt anyway?

Get over it and climb somewhere remote if you don't want to be "annoyed" by
tourists and the like.

Hmmm....
If you live in a high profile place like the base of Jackson's Tram, you may be used to large groups of people, especially tourists.
Those people who are shooting photos of you obviously find you to be doing something very special that they don't see every day. Those same people bring their money to your town and provide a large cash influx (ie jobs) to your area. Instead of belittling them for shooting photos and wearing t-shirts with offensive logos on them, why don't you simply climb and ignore them?
If you want to climb in places without crowds or at least hordes of photographers, you can certainly find them in the Tetons or the Winds or any of the thousands of other places around your home.
On the other hand, you could take the opportunity to become a grass roots ambassador for your sport of choice introduce yourself to them and have a conversation. You may find this to be a method that actually pays dividends as you may make some friends or at least meet some very interesting and worldly people in the process.
I live in places where people photograph us all of the time doing the things we love to do. If you share some of your world with them, you may be amazed at the response.
Then again, if you don't want people around when you climb especially taking photos when your on such aesthetic easy to access routes, may I suggest soloing them at night when the crowds will be diminished?

So what you have to do is clip in to a bolt, turn around on the rock and pull out a camera and start snapping pictures of the gapers, make a big production of it, wave at them, point and ooooh ahhh, or just pretend they arent there and get used to it.

If more climbers thought and acted this way, the sport of climbing probably would have significantly fewer problems with land access and public image. Age and station in life speak volumes in this thread.

It's easy to escape the average gaper. Just climb somewhere that is more than 20 steps away from their SUVs/tour buss! They seem averted to walking or getting too far from their precious vehicles. Ever notice how some won't even get out or roll down the windows to take pictures of you?

Climb in more remote areas!

My favorite is when my partner and I were climbing Dark Shadows at Red Rocks last year. It's about a 30 minute hike in, and unfortunately, the turnaround point for the park's "hiking tour" that they offer. As I was getting ready to clean the second pitch, the hiking tour showed up and all sat down to eat lunch while having a show to entertain them. Pics, commentary, and all. But on the up side, after I got to the belay, they all cheered and applauded. My mom would be so proud.

You simply misunderstand the technology. Gone are the days when men lived in fear or believed the untrue superstition. You see, the camera really can't steal your soul...

So what you have to do is clip in to a bolt, turn around on the rock and pull out a camera and start snapping pictures of the gapers, make a big production of it, wave at them, point and ooooh ahhh...

Now that's funny.

I don't know how many times I've paused on my way out from Seneca to watch some of the people fly fishing. Watching their finesse and easy ability to just drop that lure where they want it is impressive. I have a similar reaction to watching musicians play. It's a skill that is so far beyond me.

When people stop to watch me climb, I'm complimented by their attention (even if I'm distracted by it). To them, I'm fly fishing or playing music. If someone takes my picture while I'm climbing, he may take it home to share with the grandkids. Maybe they're inspired to try this pointless activity I love so much. That would be pretty cool.

The only time It has ever bothered me was one time epicing on cherry crack Zion 1986. We were in way over our heads with an eastern rack that was way too small and limited crack skills. We only had 2 pices that fit the upper part of the crack. I was wedged in the crack belaying of of a single 1/4" rivit and my partner was 70ft out leapfrogging our big hex and single friend. eventually the crack got too wide for even those meger pieces so he lowered back down to me off the hex which barely fit and then we had to bail off the single 1/4incher in sandstone and then off of loose drilled angles that you could pull out with your fingers and slip right back in the holes. someting durring this six hour ordeal this little kid looks up at us and askes " Daddy, are they going to die?" pretty insightfull of the little bastard as that was exactly what was going through my mind at the time. I just really didn't need to hear it from the peanut gallery

The best picture I have of myself climbing was taken by a "gaper." I'm glad he was there to take it and was nice enough to share it!

i realize this thread is dead but wanted to add a few completely contradictory things:

first, thanks to the op for being brave enough to complain about something that he shouldn't have (i HATE audiences).

and thanks also to the people who put things in perspective for him. i suspect that most of you understand the focus that climbing requires, and that sometimes it can be disrupted by ordinary people doing whatever it is that ordinary people do. talking, photographing. there are those of us who are more distractible than others, and we suffer more from that. but ultimately, that's our problem, and our choice to be there.

sunshine, safe travels and amazing photos to everybody, climbers or no.

Two words…Joshua Tree

Pulling through the moves of Direct Overhang when two bus-loads of tourists piled out to take photos…of course I had to “ham it up” a bit…they we’re MY fans, after all!

Several years earlier, as I was pulling through the first crux of Ball Bearing, I heard some rustling down below…when I turned to look, there was a half dozen or so folks snapping off pics like I was on a boat with Pamela Anderson! Again, I was pleased

A few things that irk me at the crags are trash, loud music, barking dogs, and loud, fowl-mouthed kids (and/ or their parents for that matter)…I’m just enough of a narcissist (hey Brian look how big my arms look in this photo), that gapers don’t bother me much.

a friend told me he got some shots of some climbers in boulder a few weeks ago. El Dorado Canyon he said. check http://nemesislsx.com/gallery for some to see if it's you.

of course the server is down just now. and that bothers me because I'm hosting his site. but it should be up soon.

edited to add:

http://www.nemesislsx.com/gallery/eldorado (and the site is back up)

aparently you've lost touch with the fact that most people can't climb anything... many people have a hard time climbing latters mentally, let alone a cliff face. If you expect these people to not think you're ridiculously cool for being midway up a cliff jumping to a hold, you're stupid and overly sensetive. They're doing you no harm, short of steeling your soul, so SHH.

Am I being a bit touchy or would you get equally mad at the gapers doing their job:gaping.?
....honestly.... you're being a bit soft! Actually, another name for a fluffy kitten comes to mind. In my book these gapers are called rubber-necks.... and they can't help it. They're just satisfying their curiosity about something that they have never seen or never thought about trying. It's kind of like when people see snow for the first time....

Its because of people like you, that I, as a picture taker, always ask people before I take photos.

Whats the big deal? Are you really that vane that you don't think a good photo of you should be in a mag somewhere? Who cares, get over it, etc etc...I find your attitude quite annoying and exclusive.

Oh and I don't mean to be harsh on your, just arguing the other point of view for the sake of argueing. I wonder if you read all the way down here or are already calling your assasin. :D

I’ve always likened climbing in the more visible parts of Eldo to being an animal in a petting zoo. The Bastille comes to mind. Last time I was there was by far the worst. Just before I began to second the first pitch of the NW corner 2 men with a large video camera asked me if they could film me. I wished I would of asked them why. I said sure and put my shoes on. They were talking about the best angle to shoot from as I started up. They were not prepared for this and hurried to get their shit together, as I was thinking to myself, you can film me, but I’m not going to wait for you silly bastards to get your damn camera ready. These people don’t make me angry, the make me laugh.
