The company I work for is working on this new show Everest that follows a group on their way up the mountain in the second deadliest season.

You talk about it being the 2nd deadliest season like it's a good thing. Even better for publicity. AND that's what we want... More people who do not belong on the mountain up there. :roll:

I think the biggest problem I have with this 'movie/series/whatever it is' is that it was motivated primarily as a show as opposed to a committed and driven group of climbers seeking a summit. Something about adding profit and ratings into the mix of 'which route should we take?' makes me feel dirty... we're turning everest into a reality show, sad.

Not a good thing at all that people died, just meant it as a gage for how rough the conditions were.
Everest is serious business, I don't think anyone should be on there who isn't completely ready to climb it

I've just seen the ads and some of the stuff on the website so far, but I don't think these guys were making decisions for profits or ratings, it looks more like it documents their trip.

But who, pray tell, is the definitive person to say whether or not someone belongs up there??? It is because of the publicity that it has recieved that it is becoming a tourist destination. I'm sorry, but the amount of people that climb it to the ratio of people who should be up there dictate that it will invariably be an accident waiting to happen. I don't think that people get the fact that ultimately getting to the top or aborting your climb is a decision that should be made by thie individual, not some guide. Because at that altitude the only person you can really rely on is yourself.

Are they taking a different route than normal? I've seen alot of the other everest stuff before... read a few books.. *name drop!!* met Ed Viesturs lol The "usual" route goes up the kumbu ice fall western cym etc.. this one they are going is on the north side.. i wonder if that way is easier.

i missed the last 15 mins or so.. did the motorcycle guy quit yet? i mean come on.. if you can barely make the approach then what are you gunna do with the hard part. i mean you dont whip off a 5.8 and go hmm that .13c looks promising

Seemed pretty cheesy....the motorcycle dude is clueless...who'd guess 8 pounds of steel in your back might make carrying a pack painful? I also liked the narrator stating there are "crevices" in the glacier...nitpicky, I know, but how much did they spend on this docu? Seems there are several people on the trip who need to remove their head from a crevice....

yeah, from the last episode it seems that the motorcycle guy isn't going to be making the trip with the rest of the team.
too bad he couldnt' get his act together and stick with the group. his bronchitis sort of sounds like smokers cough too, and i remember him asking one of the sherpas for a smoke on his way back up to advanced base camp.
should be interesting to see if he gets to make the final ascent or not

I guess I've only caught the last two shows of this and kept thinking to myself "now only if they made the expedition members compete against each other and vote each other off the team this this show would be exactly like Survivor." It was interesting to watch but way too reality showish for me. Most all of them seemed to be in it for money, publicity, or anything other then wanting to climb the mountain. Plus that all looks like way too much pain and suffering for me.

yea.. seems like the time needed is far less than the southern route. And far less technical skill. no having the nOObs eff around with ladder walks over cravasses.. seracs falling on their head.. hillary step etc. North seems all just walk until you stop going up then turn back around.
I am impressed with the asthmatic.. i'm curious to know if he has a bottle of O2 as a back up in case he can't do it without. it sounds like he trained his ass off and actually deserves the shot.
sherpas kick ass too.. those guys are machines. My favorite story is the guy who stayed the night on the summit to see (or prove) he could.

I am very impressed with him as well. He earned major bonus points in my book when he started behind everyone on the training run to North Col (i think) and finished ahead of everyone. He's really the only reason I watch the show. I'm also wondering about the backup oxygen. Seems they would have to take it for safety but then again I don't know if any of the others who made it without o2 had some on them.

Yeah, the sherpas are amazing. They are up and down the mountain so many times to get the camps set up.
The asthmatic is really impressive. I'm not sure if he carries an O2 with him, but there is 02 at all the camps on the way to the summit.

Wow.. folks who can't even climb a ladder... i wonder if there is any sort of skill evaluation before people get put onto these teams..
sucks mogens had to go down. like he said tho he has it in him.. it just wasn't his day. and luckily so cuz he woulda been screwed in all that mess
