I saw it at a film festival recently. I enjoyed the culture and the route looked impressive, but it seemed unnecessarily long with the same footage of some huge whippers.

i agree on both points. I had absolutely no idea what the heck his g/f was saying about 90% of the time!

After seeing the movie, my g/f and i had a little debate about the merits of the movie. i mean, while the route was obviously hard, she questioned whether the route was more of an ego-stroker than a real attempt to put up a good route. obviously, falling from the route repeatedly injured the guy (and he was happy to scream and curse emphatically during every fall, which were captured from various camera angles, blah blah blah, and show off all the injuries) and so one wonders if this route (and the fact that he had it filmed) was put up soley to show just how hard core this guy is....

i dunno maybe it's just a "hardcore-british-we-don't-need-pro-on-this-side-of-the-pond-thing"... just my 2 cents.

We had subtitles on while we watched it! It helped! :)

I know what you mean, but I actually found this one of the good points about the movie. Usually climbing flics are unambiguously one-sided. Making the climbers out to be gods who deserve to have us all worship at their feet. I liked seeing the other side - the side that shows that hard-core climbers may have god-like characteristics, but they're also ego-driven leeches of society. And I mean that in the best possible way. :)

Seems like besides obesity, the US is now also exporting unbearably crappy hip-hop music.

What a shame, could have been a good movie with some decent music.

I own and love it. I thought the style of the video was great. I can undestand some finding it narrow in its scope--the whole movie IS about one route--but it makes up for it in depth.

...I just picked up "Committed", which is freaking amazing...I highly recommend it.

I didn't like it at all. Half of the time you're watching him on toprope, and its quite boring. Same with the GF speaking Klingon or something. I'm not a huge fan of watching him sleep and twitch around as he's "dreaming" of this climb thats torturing his soul.

Also, idk if it was supposed to be funny, but the fake blood? c'mon.

The falling sections are wicked ballsy though and made me pee my pants. This movie is really meant to be like 10 minutes, not 50.

What are you babbling on about!? E11 has nothing to do with the US.
The crappy hip-hop in it is a local product.....Tongue

I already knew that, MC Hasta (shudder, God it was bad) obviously got his keen music taste from American hip-hop and the producers of this film were obviously copying the atrocious hip-hop from the Dosage videos.

Why do people always have to copy the worst parts of American culture?

Good question.
Probably because America seems to excel at the "bad" parts, whereas many of the "good" parts of American culture were actually borrowed from someone else.
I am actually having a hard time thinking of "good" parts of American culture that others have tried to copy..............Unsure

Wow.

First an obtuse statement by puerto and now a sweeping generalization by sbaclimber.

Which countries do you represent?

A little help: it's likely that none of us would be here, spending ludacris amounts of time on this site (some more than others: see post counts), were it not for the culture developed by a hand full of hardmen from the Yosemite Valley, USA.

People who watch climbing movies come in two categories.

1. A person who enjoys a more documentary style film with good footage plus a good story to go with it. i.e E11 or First Ascent

2. A person who just wants to see piss hard climbing and doesn't want to hear any talking, i.e boulder bra's who want to watch a climbing music video set to some terrible rap beat. kinda like Soul Cal

I personally enjoy both types for different reasons but find that a story and some background info usually make for a more complete experience. I own E11 and think it's cool on multiple levels. If you don't like interviews and story then stick to internet clips or crappy Paul Dusatko videos.

Precisely, and a person from the first category doesn't want to watch a video from the first category with crappy music from the second category of video.

"First Ascent" had outstanding music & musical editing IMHO

Good timing, too--the exchange rate was much better.
