So I'm thinking about setting up a gathering in J-Tree the 1st or 2nd weekend of December. Who is in and when do you perfer.
If you come the people from the Az gathering can show you how to "ship the box" and rate a jiffy pop as an aid route

let me know and I'll get started on it ASAP

Climb safe and don't drive angry

Hey Zac,
How is the weather up there around that time of year? My thoughts are desert + winter = dry and freezing. Correct my ignorance here and I will gladly join your party.

This would be RC.com Event at J-Tree #2, as this was the Gig that started the whole RC.com Events & Gatherings Forum.

Probably better to have it in early January, as it was last year, so as to give users time to do the Holiday Thing with their families. They can also use their X-Mas gifts at the crag.

Yeah yeah yeah!

I'm in but I'm with rrradam that it would be better (for me anyhow) if it were last week of December (after xmas) or up to the first week in January.

Maybe we could just have a big, month-long, rotating event so everybody can make it at one time or another.

Hey Zac - great idea! I'm up for another gathering... AZ was awesome. Don't have a preference on dates but lots of people at the AZ gathering were already talking about New Year's in Joshua Tree.

Oooh, I went to Josh early Feb of this year and fairly froze my knickers off. Maybe if it's not so windy, and I don't have a sucky little tent, and I generally figure out how to suck it up ...

I'm defintely up for a gathering in J-Tree. We should do it as a New Year's bash, but if not enough people are cool with that then lets do it some other time in January. As far as "shipping the box" goes, I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy.

ROTFLMAO!!!!

(Ship the Box) Zac.....you're so cool.

Ok, a rather intimate group of us will be in J-Tree for New Years, but by no means is it of "Gathering" status.

So I'd be up for early December as well. Mid January might not work for us because we'll be settling back down into work after the holidays.

There is that 3 day weekend in January, I think it is MLK day, Civil Rights day, Black Monday, or whatever you call it, it is a holiday. This seems like the PERFECT time for a gathering.

I went last Feb during the olympic break we got from school and the weather was perfect.

I would love to go again.

And if Jan does not work out, maybe that long weekend in Feb. Those are the only 2 days off school we get all semester! (stupid school)

I'm going to start early this year. Already the temps are shaping up and I'll be there the first week of November for a handful of days, then Thanksgiving week. After that, I'll be in and out over the rest of the season if anyone is interested, just leave a message.

Adam - I've got a few projects for you that should make for eventful conversation over the evening fires - can't wait to get you back into town hehehe....

I'm Definitely up for it!

I allready have a trip planned for Dec 26-Jan 2nd, and I'm bringing about 5 other people out with me.

I planned on staying in Hidden Valley for the most part, with a day trip down to Indian Cove to do a couple of classics I loved from when I used to live out there.

We'll have two vehicles, a Lincoln Continental (Dad's cushy ride) and a shiney new Black Nissan Xterra.

So uh, we could probably pick up at least one, maybe 2 other climbers on the way out there from Tucson or maybe Phoenix.

Can't wait to see everyone again!

I think I feel a "w00t" coming on...

I have "mandatory vacation" the week between Christmas and New Years, so I'm looking for somewhere to go anyway. Seems like a gathering in JT around New Years would be perfect - maybe start on Dec 27 (giving people "family time" for Christmas), and run through New Years, culminating with a big party at midnight on top of Intersection Rock, or some other cool locale.

Yeah, 5 days would work perfect. Weekend gatherings are just so short - by the time everyone actually gets there, it seems like it's already time to go home.

Karen and I have spent the last 3 New Year's Eves there and have had a blast. It's crowded, so get there days early to get a spot. As the entire park is full.

Well, Joe. It seems that the AZ people had so much fun, I think we might have to make this a regular thing (get-togethers on the weekends).

So, um.....you're just going to have to move down here. You're so cool, you should be from AZ anyway .

Tell your boss I apologize, but he's going to have to find someone else.

I like Joe's idea. December 27th is a great time for doing it. Not only will we be able to spend time with family, but it'll give us 3 days to gather everyone together for the New Year's Bash.

I'm going to be at JT Feb15-22. I was there last Feb. and the weather was fine. This is my favorite place. I have heard that there is NOTHING like JT on New Years Eve, the whole place gets caught up in a desert vortex.

It all sounds good to me. I'll probably be out there just about every weekend this winter.
It will be nice to meet all of you who are coming from Arizona. I was born in Nogales but I cried everyday till my parents decided to move to So. Ca. It took two weeks.(I wanted to learn how to surf)

I just got back from two days out there - nice and cool temps (60's-70's) but awefully windy. A good time nonetheless.

Anytime there's a RC crew heading out there I'd be down for it I've got a LOT of projects out there. Yikes.

It looks like we have a split decision on the dates...mid-January and end of December.

Do we need to make it a 2 parter?

The Yosemite Gig was for over a week, so why not do J-Tree from Dec 27th till January 7th ???

I can be there for the duration, as I have the Winters off to climb full time.

10 days, and enough time for people to at least make part if not all of it.

The sooner we hammer down the dates, the sooner Zac can make an Event, as dates are needed, and I can move it to the Front Page.

How's this sound ???

Dec 27th-Jan 7th...
2nd Annual J-Tree Event & New Year's Eve Party

But I'll warn all who are unfamilliar with New Year's Eve's at J-Tree... If you don't get there by the 29th, you will not get a site. The rangers riggerously enforse the 2 car per site, 2 tent, etc... rules at that time, as the park if filled.

I can try to get sites by placing extra tents in them like we did last year, but the site will be much more full at that time than it was when we had it last year. So I can't garantee sites to those who come late.

For a large gathering, we are better off having it in mid Jan.

And for those that can't make it, we'll take lots of pictures!

How is the campsite situation in Hidden Valley around then? I know it'll fill up by the 29th like you said..hopefully 27th is early enough.

I've camped and climbed at J-Tree over 50 times, and usually go during the week when the park is almost empty.

Of those 50 times, I've only been able to find a site in HV about 15-20 times.

Chances are, 100-1, that we won't be in HV. It's like the Camp 4 of J-Tree, and there are not many sites relative to the climbers. Especially on New Year's Eve.

Last years 1rst Ever RC.com Event, we were lucky enough to be there, because 'jaybee' scored the sight, as when I got there, they were all full. You need to be there when someone leaves, as they're only empty for an hour or less in Hidden Valley.

I was there over one Thanksgiving, and every camppsite in the park was occupied. Some people let us squat on their site, as they were solo.

Give me a couple of days and let me check if I have to work or not and I'll set some dates. The only thing that bothers me about doing this on New Years is the campsite problem. I'll geet back to everyone about the dates.

rrradam,

What are your thoughts on Indian Cove?
I know it can get full pretty quick as well, but from what I remember it's not as popular as inside the main part of the park..
Adn I gues sif it's that full, I know a way into the Base and we could camp out there? (just joking..they carry live rounds in that area)

Climbsomething,

Congrats on the new camera! ..and the B-Day!

I still use my crappy little Vivicam 3500..for digital anyway..and I have a Samsung 35mm (yes, a samsung camera) ECX1. And it does just about everything..except connect to my computer...

Looks like New Years at J-Tree is a no go for me. I'd be up for a gathering early/mid December or mid January, though..... Even if it is not an "official" gathering and rather a smaller group, I'd still be up for it.

Hey, this sounds great. I've only been climbing for a few months and I've only been on real rock once (Tahquitz), but I'm really hooked (and I have lots of gear!). If its OK for the beginner, old farts to come then I'm in for any time in December or January and so is my climbing partner MVRANCHER.

Yeah, that was a sweet score. We spent our first 2 days in Jumbo, then decided to try Hidden Valley again and scored the site thanks to some nice folks who were packing up to leave. 2 hours later i happen to see this pathfinder with a 'rrradam' license on the front and flag it down. Fate. What a great time.

artm -

What's the max on peoples and autos for the group sites?

Do you allready have reservations, or do you need donations to get that started?

Which site #'s were you thinking about?

Erica, and anyone else who cannot make the dates once decided upon...

Karen and I have had all Winters off to climb full time, so we'll be there for 4 days, and home for 4 days, there for 4, home for 4, etc... ALL WINTER LONG. So with a little notification, we should be able to save you, or any other user, a choice site by just putting an extra tent there. This way you are set when you arive.

The park is only totally full for Thanksgiving and New Years. So any time days before or after would be good.

If we try to plan this outside of the above mentioned full days we should be able to get sites much easier. Maybe even Hidden Valley, as we had two sites side by side last year in HV, but it was in early January.

I have done one New Year's at the BLM land outside the West Entrance, but this requires us to tear down camp each day, as it would be pillaged(sp?).

So does anyone have concerns (sp?) about campsites that weekend. I'm worried that if we plan this and 50 people show up but only 20 get sites and the fit would hit the shan...if you know what I mean. Oh...and I usally make a but load of money if I work over New years, and if I plan this and get a gig I would have to bail. So what's everyones thoughts? I'd pefer mid Dec. or mid Jan.

That's the point I'm trying to make. If we plan for those dates over the Holliday, and more than 20 people show up, it'll be a miracle if we all get a site there.

More prudent to plan for a big one in Mid December or Early January.

So I've read all the thread, and I kind of have to agree with Adam's last post. You will not be able to find a ton of spots together (or at all) in HVCG between Christmas and New Years.

Here's another thing you have to look at: Besides camping, there will be an absolute ass-load of people (climbers) there at that time day tripping or not, and all the "good" routes will have lines. Now I don't wait in lines to climb (I find something near by) and I would hate for our gathering to even remotely suck due to too many people.

So I propose that the formal gathering be mid December. Usually people get out of college in mid Dec (Friday is 12/13 and 12/20). So let's hope that it is the 13th, and plan for something that weekend wrapping around to the next weekend (Dec 13 - Dec 23rd). Us locals could get there early (12/12/02) and claim some spots for the weekend and here's the other kicker...

The people who come out the 23rd can just take over the spots for New Years so we will be all set up for New Years without the pressure of having a real gathering then. I will probably just be there over long weekends (thurs night to mon night) due to my exorbitantly high medical school loan payments and car payments creating the need to actually work my butt off during Tues - Thurs if the weekends are for climbing.

And remember, last year was just the start of the Yosemite-fication of J-Tree. The Tool will be really watching parking and other antics in an attempt to make HVCG a pay site to fund their "wildlife management" (see the oxymoron) projects (hell, they moved Intersection Rock to the opposite side of the road!).

Not to be cynical, but I think there will be much less pressure if we pick a quieter time for the real gathering, and then just let us bums stay on for New Years.

And let's keep in mind why we started climbing...to have something to do the few moments of the day while we are sober.

TRADitionally yours,

Cali Dirtbag

addiroids,

FYI, they did not actually move intersection rock. They moved the road. I have a couple of other additional observations to offer:

1) I don't see why RC would necessarily need to camp at Hidden Valley campground. there are many other campgrounds, and I think, in fact that Ryan for one is nicer. Belle is nice too--and everything is within a 20 minute drive or so from everything else.

2) What about getting a "group camp" site, such as those offered at Sheep Pass? That is also a central area, and you can reserve the group sites for far more people.

Just a few thoughts,

Curt

O.K. what do you think about this... Jan 17th to the 19th and we can climb for my
B-day? (it's the18th) The only thing is I turn 25 and I had teachers in highschool tell me I was going to be dead by the time I'm 25, so I could fall to my death on the 17th So that's my idea.

I see the point about New years and all..but I'm kinda stuck going out then.

The kids have to be back in school (High School and College) on the 6th of Jan. :-(

So you guys have fun, and if anybody wants to come out with, you're more than welcome..

I'll prolly stay in Indian Cove...might even make reservations. or maybe even at one of the campgrounds in town...but I think most of those sites are for people that live there.

Oh Well...whatever works.

Really though, that weekend is open for us, but we won't know for sure until the end of December.

rrradam,

I was having a little fun--I didn't think that anyone thought intersection rock had actually been moved.

My more important point was--Why doesn't RC.com look into reserving some of the group sites, such as those at Sheep Pass? I lived in Joshua Tree (the town) for 6 years, so I know something about this. These group sites are designed for large groups! Sounds just like what is needed.

Curt~

Would you mind coordinating with bullit (Scott) and finding out how much it is/what kind of advance you need and any other details?

That would help out greatly in figuring out the best alternative for a group of that size during a busy time there.

Thanks

Curt~

Thanks for helping! Maybe get some general info while the whos/whens/hows are being worked out.

Questions to ask:
How many to a site?
How much for one group site?
How far in advance can we or do we have to reserve?
Deposit and how much?
Any dates that are currently booked (ex: New Years)?
Restrictions on dates?

That might be a good place to start.

OK. Here is what I have found out so far. The sites at Shhep Pass are reservable on-line through the NPS or by calling (800) 365-CAMP.

The sites will hold up to 50 people and have a cost of $35.00 per night. Multiple tents are allowed. The only restriction of concern is a maximum vehicle allowance of 15 cars--which (they say) is strictly enforced.

As for dates, New Years is booked. I checked before Christmas, and after January 5, and these dates seem to be available--at least as of today.

FYI, there are also group camp sites at Indian Cove and Cottonwood. Cottonwood is far from the climbing--so probably not a good choice. Indian Cove can be good, especially if it is cold, since it is around 1000 feet lower than the rest of the park. (I did not check availability at Indian Cove.)

Hope this helps.

Hey Curt,

I just checked out Indian Cove..

They have about 100 open sites, normal ones anyway..and 6 open group sites.

The guy I was talking to said the group sites hold from 15-20 people and are $20 per night.

New Years (27th through 2nd) has 6 open group sites.

Well, it sounds like Indian Cove might be the place. The only downside to I.C. is that it is not directly connected to the main portion of JTNP by road. You have to exit the park & drive to a different entrance to get there. Probably not a big deal though, since everyone will have to get out there in some sort of vehicle anyway.

So, someone just needs to get a head-count & decide on the dates.

As if everybody having different schedules already wasn't bad enough, here's mine. I've had the idea of a trip to J-Tree in my head since July (at the Yosemite gathering). Now, looking at it realistically and it being only 2.5 months away, I pretty much can only do something around the 27th to the 4th or 5th. It sounds like I'm not the only one though. I guess we'll just keep posting until we get it all figured out ....

ok, heres my 3cents,
I am new to this site ,
and i almost always have an extended stay planned for winter in josh. do you guys get a group site? or is it pretty much everyone for thiemselves? Im down anytime to spend a month or so out there, transportation is a little prob for me so maybee ill hitch out there. im just currious about the site or sites as ive heard it takes a while to reserve a site in sheeps pass...around that time of year...expecially around new years. i suppose i could ninja camp around the outback or something if hidden valley is packed as i know it will be.
i hope to see yall and put names to these faces..and again hello

It seems as though most people (not all though) would prefer something like Dec. 27th through Jan 2nd or so. If that is the case, then, according to Scott's information, Indian Cove would be the best bet. He indicated that 6 group sites were available there. So, what is needed now is a good head count to see how many sites are needed. It's probably a good thing if this can be accomplished soon--as these sites will probably fill up.

Regards,

Curt

Curt,

I also cannot commit 100%, but real-life permitting, I will be there from about Dec. 26 or 27 until anywhere from Jan. 2 to Jan. 5.

The only things that would stop me are work or if there will be nobody around in J-Tree during those times.

A agree that a date needs to be set. Then a headcount can be taken to see how much space is needed. But, who is in charge of this thing? (where's Alexander Haig when you need him?) I am certainly not, I was just trying to help with information. Someone should set the dates, see how many will attend, and make the reservations for group sites--before they fill up.

Set a date? But we're only on page 6!

Ok, how about we book sites for Dec 26 (or 27?)-Jan 2 and just let people come when they want. Some of us will certainly be there the whole time, others only for a few days.
Personally I can't think of anywhere I'd rather be at new year's than with a bunch of stinky climbers. Yeah!

O.K here is the deal, I can't commit to New Years and others that will be key in planning this agree. so what I'm doing is setting the dates for Jan. 17th to the 19th and I will reserve two spots at sheeps pass. I might show up on the 16th and anyone is welcome to join me. So thats the dates17th to the 19th.

(and we only got to 6 pages)

It sounds like a lot of people are really pysched for a New Year's bash and I completely agree. Since that's the case we should set up two different gatherings so those who can't attend the New Years one can at least climb with people from RC.COM later that month. It's up to the majority though, but I need to know ASAP so I know what date to book my flight home from college.

No Worries,
Heath

I am totally up for climbing this time of year. Hopefully this will inspire Santa to bring me for Cams.

Here is a summary of preferred dates for your convenience (or amusement):

climbingcowboy - Jan 13-15, jan 17-19
burren - "anytime in january or feb"
crazygrl - Dec or Feb
crazywacky - will be there Dec 26-Jan 2nd
tradguy - Start Dec 27 thru new years
hawk527 - "Dec 27th is a great time"
mike - will be in JT Feb15-22
crazywacky - "I propose Dec 27th through January 2nd"
pbjosh - anythime
madturtle - new years
crap - weekend of dec 14, but will do new years if it happens
bullit - Anytime after Jan 10
vegastradguy - any weekend
rrradam - Dec 27th to Jan 7th
climberchic - Can't do new years. early-mid dec or mid january
climboff - anytime in dec or jan
burren - mid-dec / mid jan (?)
addiroids - propose big one Dec 13 -23rd, smaller gathering over new years
climber1 - mid december
pbcowboy77 - Jan 17th - 19th
stick333 - Jan 17th - 19th
climberchic - Jan 17th-19th
rock_diva - New year's week, can't make jan 17th-19th
nailzz - Dec 26 or 27 - Jan 4 or 5
curt - Dec 27th-Jan 2 (?)
climbinganne - Dec 26th-Jan2

The two general "camps" seem to be:

Code
Jan 17-19 = 10
Dec 27-Jan 2 = 16

* I count people who said "anytime" or both for both dates
* I don't count people who are too vague (like "the above dates work")

I should be there anyway, but I'll bet $$$ if we do this during New Years there will be users who fly in, and can't get a site, and that would be bad.

I'll be there for NYE, but I think a date in mid Jan would be better for the Event.

Don't put me down for NYE for the gig, as I think it would be a bad choice for so many people.

Yeah, I think you're right. It will be so much harder to organize an 'official' gather at NYE.
I have a tentative plan to be there over New Years anyway, but I can do both.

khanom,

I can probably only make the Jan 17-19th time slot. I would love to be at JT for New Year's, but there is a lot of family stuff going on. (Of course, If I can sneak away for NYE, too, I will.)
