Also stay away from cheap crap(cheapo cams), you'll just end up replacing it later.

I'm of two minds about this. When I started building a rack, I couldn't afford Metolius or Black Diamond (or WC Tech Friends or Trango, for that matter). A set of discount cams cost me $200 and gave me easily twice the number I could have purchased from some companies.

Have I upgraded since? Sure, but I had a season or two on those discount cams, and a period where it filled the gaps in my gradual purchases. I still use a couple of the smaller sizes regularly. While some of my discount cams don't get much use these days, I still consider them a good investment at the time.

Thanks everybody, I bought my first pieces today. I bought a set of Metolius nuts (except #2 and #8), a couple of tricams and a biner for $45. It seemed like a pretty good deal to me. Next paycheck I'm gonna get the biggest few hexes and then a couple more tricams. I was hoping to buy a set of cams but the motor blew up in my wife's car so no cams. I'm gonna try to swing $50 a paycheck (as I typed this my wife looked over my shoulder and said that was to much..haha). Thanks for everybody's advice this is the most help I've ever gotten on RC.com

Any opinions on this set: http://www.bouldermountaineering.com/thebomo/pr/4275/pg/1/? I was considering picking it up for my starter rack ... I haven't found any deals that would make a similar set any cheaper, but I also might be missing stuff.

It might be a good option for the OP.

I rarely recommend package deals, as they usually have crap you don't need, and you can often do as well for yourself with a bit of research. I wouldn't necessarily go with ultra-light gear, as you're paying a premium for it. You'll get more pieces on your rack if you go with slightly heavier and less expensive pro.

For instance, the #6 superlight rock is about half an ounce lighter than the standard #6. The two superlights look to be aid pieces, as they're only rated to 4 kN. That's gear you won't use on your free-climbing rack you're paying for now. ABC Huevos (4-13) would cost you $50, a hell of a lot less than what they're selling you.

The smallest three tricams would be about $45 at regular price, and you can often find package deals on cams from Gear Express. If you don't find a package, you can buy three or more cams and get 10% off. With that deal, the same cams would be about $205. Without looking for great sales, cosmetic seconds, and by switching to a cheaper brand of nuts (and giving you one extra for free climbing), you're looking at $300. I'd rather get my "package" and spend the $75 you'll save on hexes, more cams, racking biners, or whatnot.

I just skimmed but it doesn't look like anyone mentioned Rock Empire gear. Their gear is solid and cheap. Check out the leader package on their site (rockempire.com) 8 cams, 8 nuts, 9 biners, nut tool, two slings on sale for ~340$ right now. More gear than you can shake a stick at with less minimum finicial agony!

Well recently I started collecting stuff for a rack (though I don't even have a rope yet, my friend has one though) I was planning on buying it alittle bit at a time because for one I'm alittle low on cash because of paying for my classes and plus I plan on hitting the gym and working on technique and learning the knots and other things alot before I go out and try lead (I'm nowhere near good enough yet) but I thought I might get a few things off ebay (non moving things like nuts and hexs) and I bought this set of BD Nuts #1-13 for $50

http://cgi.ebay.com/...K:MEWA:IT&ih=012

What do ya'll think? Was this a pretty good deal?
