i think aussie style is just running down the rock belly first instead of being completely inverted.

It is, aussie style is just raping down the face backwards. The upside down way is fun, just use your helmet and best judgement.

Aussy style the rappel device is attached to the back of the harness and you walk down the rock face first. In this picture the 8 is attached to the front of the harness. I saw some drunks rappelling invirted like this and one guy flipped himself over before he cleared the overhang, hit his back and head on the rock, lost his grip on the rope and was only saved by a sober friend who pulled the rope tight from the bottom. I can't recommend this method, if you try it, make sure you are rappelling off an overhang where you can hang free away from the rock and don't invert while still near the face. Of course I only rap when I have to and I think you guys are all NUTS!!

Whoever said "use your best judgement" hit the nail on the head. Do what you are comfortable doing, and don't try a method that you're not sure about. And, yeah, wear a helmet while you're at it.

I only do this when I take girls on date. But rappelling by itself gets realy boaring. Expesialy if you go to the same spot. So I started to rappel different ways. This way is perty fun. But you do have to make sure that your harness is on you nice and tight. And that you are at an overhavng. Once you are past the overhang lean back and their you go. The bad part about it is that you have to you have to hold one of your legs on the rope so you dont go right-side-up. And this will eather cause a bad rope burn. Does anyone know if this has a name? I call it Spider Rappelling because I look like Spiderman in the picture. [ This Message was edited by: thoxsie on 2002-10-10 09:20 ] [ This Message was edited by: thoxsie on 2002-10-10 12:24 ]

I used to rap like that back when I was a sport rapper. It is no big deal, but I always had a rush of blood to my head especially when I stopped to fast. That particular "style" is more for show really. To each their own.

My boss told me the reason for Australian style rapelling. There is only one good reason (in my opinion) -- you need to see where you are going at all times looking around you, one hand rapelling the other hand with a rifle, in order to not get shot. It's all about the military deal!!! Little history for ya. Jules [ This Message was edited by: rocks4jules on 2002-10-10 09:32 ]

aussie style is so much fun!!!ON a low angle slab it is posable to run and jump and fly a realy long ways. But you can also burn your hands because your going realy fast. And have some one hold onto the bottom of the rope. Try it!

I have to agree that it is incredibly dumb. Rapping is boring until you have an epic - ropes getting stuck, knots/clothes/webbing getting sucked into the belay device, etc. If you want to show off, sure go do it. Hopefully the girl you are trying so hard to impress doesn't think you are that stupid(yea right, it isn't that hard but she doesn't know that).

Rappelling is climbing's non-athletic cousin.

Dude, you are like, so extreme, man. Right on! Anyone got a mountain dew? This is stupid beyond comprehension. Anybody who rappels for thrills is a moron. Anybody who rappels for thrills to impress a girl is an even bigger moron and likely a redneck. Make sure you get yourself killed on a chosspile somewhere so no one cares if the crag is closed when you crater.

That is soooo cool.....all of you 'safety' minded people who think this is dumb should remember that the main reason for all this gear we have is to have fun right ? As long as you take the proper precautions and think it through beforehand there is nothing wrong with doing something for no other reason than the pure joy of doing it. Though I would not do it drunk Rick

REAL REASON, In the military we use this techique when doing MOUT (Military Operations in Urban Terrain) When Rappelling off a building down into windows. We have a rope bag strapped to our lower leg with the rope in it so the rope doesn't dangle in front of the window giving our element of supprise away. We go inverted like that so that the first thing to peek into the window is our weapon and our eyes. Giving the enemy less of a target and we can usually clear the room quite quickly. Then you flip back up right and bust through the window, un-clip, drop rope bag and continue clearing the building. Main difference from the picture is that when going down a building your legs will be spread and against the wall to keep you from spinning and facing the wrong direction. But without a wall you wrap your legs around the rope for balance. Quick class on room clearing from a US Marine.

Thanks for showing me the party trick I'll need when I'm ready to join the military and want to impress a girl while wiping out an entire floor of renegades while I'm drunk.

Umm. . . Are you guys the type of people that think a 'fun' date idea is to take a girl to the movies and to go to McDonald afterwards? And what type of girls are you dating. Every girl that I have taking Rappelling LOVED it. I have had one say that she never wanted to go again but she still enjoyed going. Can someone explain to me why this is so dumb? The only problem that I have ever seen with it is that your harness might slip off if you don't put it on right. And I have had my shirt caught in the belay device. The only thing it did was slowed me down (and burned a hole in the shirt). But as you can see by the picture that wouldn't have happened if I was upside down. The only thing that would get stuck in it is the belay device.

I think rocks4jules is right. I've only ever heard of special forces and Army Rangers "going Aussie" can't see a use for it unless I needed to lay down some cover fire on a rap. Doesn't happen much in Kelowna. [ This Message was edited by: rockpossum on 2002-10-17 19:18 ]
