Wow - with that much chalk up there to begin with, who the hell decided they needed the tick marks, too?!

The first step is

1) Acknowledgment of the Existence of the Abuse

Accepting the existence alone is a difficult task. First the marks are denied. They are often rationalized as being inadvertent or unintentional. But no one buys that it happened by an accident. The shame is often too much to be faced.

But acceptance of its existence is the first big step!

Ya know, on rock like standstone, 95% of the time chalk does NOTHING......

I own a chalk bag, but I primarily use it for things like gyms or if the temperature is around 120 degrees.

Sorry, no photos (partner had the camera) but I did Crimson Chrysalis a few days ago. Holy Tickmarks, Batman! Not only were lots of holds ticked (on a 5.8!) but there were big arrows drawn in chalk on many of the pitches, as if to say 'GO THIS WAY'.

Ouch. That and the excessive number of bolts really detracted from an otherwise phenomenal route.

GO

Photo not mine:

"To defy the laws of Tradition" Left Flank- RRG. Good climb, felt like it was a block of chalk.

More pics here.

Ladies and gentleman,

These are the faces of chalk abuse. Now that you have acknowledged the reality of their existence we come to the next step.

Step 2) Coming to terms with your anger

The rock has done nothing to you to deserve this treatment. Yes, it makes you angry when the rock was too hard to grip. But is it really the rocks fault?

The rock didn't ask you to climb it. But you pressured it to let you try. Then you found yourself faced with your own shortcomings and that was when you took it out on the rocks face with excessive chalk. Chalk abuse that everyone can see.

You must face your anger. Your frustration with your grip is not an excuse to take it out on the rock.

Well, I'm glad you finally decided to stop picking on Smith B_G!

(I'll admit, it is bad, but its not the only place with chalk abuse!)

Wow that is just wow. Sometimes I winder why people abuse chalk like that. I will admit to using chalk, but I don't use a lot. I only use it when I need to.
times when I need chalk high humidity days where your sweat just hangs on your body, nonpourous rock and the like. Otherwise too much chalk can be a dextrament to the next person who climbs. nothing is worse than gabbing someone elses slimy chalk ewww. Be sure to bring a toothbrush

Another brilliant pronouncement from the most opinionated 5.9 climber on the site. Are you this wrong about everything in your life, or just climbing?
