Any ice yet? I know, too warm (myself have been squeezing out a lot of rock weekends at the New - got my hardest sport and trad onsights yet in the last couple of weeks, yay). Just looking ahead and wondering if any decent ice forms in WPA.

Congrats on all the climbing.

The ice around this area is either a life and death secret or everyone knows about it. I think most spots only form up for a few days at a time because the weather doesn't stay consistently cold enough.

I don't really know that well though. I only tried ice climbing once, and it didn't light a fire under me.

Thanks, Dan. Ice did not really light a fire under me at first either - it was just a way to do some climbing related thing outside in winter (which lasts for roughly 10 months and 2 weeks in MN). That is, till I got on the sharp end - ice tools and screws followed shortly thereafter.Smile Now am looking for a pair of more techincal (i.e., with vertically oriented front points) crampons. Some trips to NY are in order this winter.

If you're serious about ice... Like Dan said to most its life and death secrets. I've heard rumors that it exists. Just gotta hook up with the right people... The ECP is not the best source for beta or locations. PM me if you're serious.

The ECP is a good source for meeting other climbers (including ice) and tagging along on trips to the Adirondacks and other northern destinations outside of Western PA.

Bill has a trip report thread that he started up:
http://www.rockclimbing.com/...post=1743697#1743697

I think he has several months until he gets back here to PA. It should have a lot of climbing in there.

I really feel sorry for you guys up there. I see your weather report and forcast and it sucks. I went for a bike ride today in shorts and t shirt. I am at my sisters in texas. I went toprope soloing at mineral wells yesterday and did something wrong switching over to rapell and caught my finger in a coil of rope. It is much better today. Should be fine by tomorrow.
The only good thing about the cold is you guys might get some ice to climb on.

You're right... The ECP is a great place to meet people. Its a great group for urban folks that like to flock together. Especially if you don't want pushed too hard. Anyone thats just getting into climbing can learn things from them. Check out their site.

We've been able to successfully avoid derogatory comments like the one above in this forum. I'd like to keep it that way, if possible.

Obviously, Tim, you haven't had a good experience with the ECP. This doesn't necessarily mean that others won't have a different experience. Let's try to stay positive, please.

I don't see anything derogatory in Tim's statement. He stated that it was a great place to meet people and that it's a great group. He people can learn things from them and to check out their site. The way I read it, Tim was just stating some facts about the ECP.

Maybe you should relax a little and let the man state his opinion (which by the way, matches a lot of other's opinion about the ECP).

Peace

PM Rob Holzman. He's the Access Fund Regional Coordinator out there and has been putting together a book about PA climbing for a couple of years now. He'll be able to hook you up. His username here is roclimb.

If that doesn't work, let me know. A guy that develops in central PA contacted me once. We had a conversation about a 'dolphin wall' if I remember. I could track down his info if needed.

Remember last dec. We climbed three out of four weekends at lisbon. Doesn't sound like it will be like that this year.
Another positive from me on ecp. It is a good place to learn to climb safely and there are alot of ppl there that climb alot harder than I. I guess you can find your niche in any climbing group. Whatever your level is or how hard you want to push.

Negative experience... nope. I climb with many past and current ECP members. Stay postitive... I am and have been for quite a few years despite the lack of help from most "local" climbers. I've been tirelessly developing, searching, and INFORMING people like you in our "community" Weigh the truth Victor. How much local beta and crag info have you learned from the ECP? I'm guessing much less than you have from my site. How many times have you clipped bolts that I've put in? I'm guessing quite a few. So I'll stand tall and say that they are not the best resouce for locating local areas. The truth is that there are tons of great climbing resources right in our backyard, but most "locals" end up driving outside the region for lack of knowlege etc. In short if anyone doesn't need to be told to stay positive its me.

This is a forum about SWPA. We should promote SWPA. Why send someone hours away when there is so much potential right here in our back yard.

Anything else? Shocked

Happy climbing!

It lists a lot of PA climbing spots with their current access. He is looking for corrections or additions.

How accurate is Krahlick? I have never been there but from my understanding it should be more east of Lost Crag.

Hey Tim,

Perhaps I misread your message- my apologies. I have heard a lot of people over the years knock the ECP-- and in some cases rightly so! -- but with new folks I always like to share what we have in the region, whether I use the resource or not. ECP, and even Venture Outdoors to some small extent, are good places for new people to the Burgh to meet folks and take part in activities. I climbed with Divesh earlier this year at the New and my message to him regarding ice climbing was "check em out." Can't hurt anything.

I have no doubt that you, Tim, are a great resource for our area. If a new person had a choice one weekend between hanging with you in W-PA or hiking it up to ADK with newbies, hell, it'd be a no brainer.

And actually, most of my clips have been south in WV, although I'd like to get to know Breakneck a little better.

Peace,
Victor

Ps. I ain't got that picture of the jackass up there for me for nuthin. Wink

How long are you on your roadtrip for Bill? I will be in Vegas for a long weekend in January (i'm sure you'll be long gone by then). I'm hoping to get a day of climbing in...

I'll be there again in early April, but for actual hiking in the Canyon and climbing at Red Rocks (as opposed to gamblin').
