hmm... If I were a piece of climbing gear, I'd be a can of Red Bull and a bag of Beef Jerky. If that doesn't count for climbing gear (why the hell not?!) then I'd have to offer up climbing tape for my hands. I keep the same "tape gloves" for months. I hope I can answer for my friends, too. My Buddy Russ would be a portaledge since he constantly finds his comfy spot when he's not climbing.

What climbing tool am I? When trad leading it's best to be a BD #1 camalot - good for so many bomber placements. When sport leading it's best to be a biner of nuts - cuz of the nuts. When bouldering I wanna be a pink tricam - solidly holds onto small bits of rock. On a roadtrip with buds I wanna be a WC flexifriend - cuz of the flexifriend part. But at the end of the day, I'm just a climbing tool. Jeremy

A harness. You know, that piece of equipment you pick out based upon comfort, durability, and reliability. Ropes break, nuts/tricams/hexes/'biners - they fracture, bad placement can break a cam. You have to really abuse your harness to wear it out. When you don't want it, you stuff it in a bag where it waits for your return. Assuming you've reached in, pulled it out and put it on, your harness is always there to break a fall when you've done something stupid or you're in over your head.

OK, I know this is bad, but I am going to say it anyway: My friends think I,m a nut, which makes me feel like an alien. When I get knotted up trying to put a stopper to it, I call on my big Bro to keep me anchored. He can offset my friends with a hex causing them to taper a bit. Eventually I am hoping things will equalize and we can all be friends again.

Ooh, you guys are creative! I wanted to call myself the little yellow alien... but I'm not sure why, so for now, I'll just mention that my brother, ID: rockram, is DEFINATELY a HAUL BAG! He always offers to carry as much as he can, and never complains. I'll tell you what, he's the guy you want around when you've got a nice hike up the canyon back to camp!!! I'll ditto skibabeage on this one, but I'm a Charlet Moser Pulsar instead. UPS just delivered mine from Barrabes and they haven't left my sight since. Most definitely the sexiest, sharpest, & most exciting piece of gear in my collection. I'm in love... these tools are HOT! (Wait a minute--I don't mean to imply these tools are like me, that would certainly be a little vain... I guess I'm responding more to a variation of the question... if you COULD BE like a certain piece of equipment, what would it be...!) In reality, I'd probably be more like a tri-cam--some love 'em, some think they're useless, and some just don't know what to do with them.

I have to change my answer to this: haul bag. And that's because I'm an essentially inert object that my wall partner has to coax up the wall. And I get stuck below roofs while he's up above wondering if he has to rap down to free me.

mtngeo, at least you were benighted with a hot babe, regardless of what sort of . . . . I mean, you try topping out with a U.S. Marine who won't let you borrow the flashlight ("What if we're up here tomorrow?") to get firewood as he wraps up in a space blanket. That was a Helen Keller night, groping for any sort of stick that wouldn't bend.

I'm definitely a copperhead. Ask any woman. You've got to beat the hell out of me before I will reluctantly conform to the shape of the crack into which I have been hammered. And you know what the really scary thing is? If you beat me hard enough, I'll fit into any placement she chooses. Sheesh. [maybe I should take up free climbing again...] P.S. I can vouch for Apollodorus' inertia

I think my user name says it all . . . Leaverbiner - the nickname has a story behind it that I won't delve into now, but basically, I'm the piece of gear you take along just in case you can't finish your project . . . or was it that I am the piece of gear you think is completely expendable and you'd be willing to leave it behind? Damn, I can never remember which it is!
