I think putting it on your rear view mirror would be really rad. Try that. Basically I would never use it again, as a back up or not just because what if you actually need to use it and it breaks? Climb safe.

in reply to winkwinklamboninin comment about the ATC being unsafe WHAT! its a lump of metal which creates excellent friction nothing can go wrong! whereas with the babyish gri gri (used by 4 to 7 year olds the world over!) should really only be used on a multi pitch climb to rest your arms, I've seen entire locking mechanisms rip out of these things and believe me it its not a pretty sight and about the cock ring comment make sure you've stopped belaying first

i dont see how any of you think its safe to repel with a atc when its obvious without a flux capacitor to move you back in time before the fall its obviously not safe. geez.

The best use is to put it on your computer and sit around posting uses for it all day long on different websites.

It can also be used as a weapon, I once lent my ATC to a 2 year old to make him shut up and he used it to bang his mother in the face with it, it wasn´t funny back then but I´m laughing as I write this! hee hee D

its already been said, but allow me to reinterate, than unlike a gri-gri, the an atc isn't crucial to holding the climber down; instead, it merely provides friction. For example, the older styles didn't even have the ring which clips into the biner. Instead, they have a piece of sprectra (equivilant cord) to keep the device from slidding WAY up the rope. That being said, the ATC isn;t going to break/snap/explode/implode based on the stresses of belaying or rapelling. But, if you feel the need to replace it, I'm not going to condemn you. It's YOUR SAFETY, and you NEVER CAN BE TOO SURE.

You could use it as a hook that stays open to hang gear on. Rope always comes together and is hard to clip to. The stiff wire of an ATC would be much easier.

You can use it as a bottle opener. I personaly have a hard time doing this, but have seen it done on several occasions. There is a trick to it. You have to turn the ATC at you pry. This is probably the most functional use for and old ATC.

OK IT'S TIME TO GET SERIOUS, WALTER SAID THE FOLLOWING: "unlike a gri-gri, the an atc isn't crucial to holding the climber down; instead, it merely provides friction" Any belay device is crucial to the system. Providing friction is the whole point of going through all the trouble of making sure your on Belay!!!!!! Let me post a segment of the above quote again: "it merely provides friction" Am I the only one that sees the insanity with that statement? If you take a hacksaw to the side of an atc, it could open under load, allowing the rope to run straight through the biner, right?(this would "merely" cause lack of friction) So why would the possibility of a hairline fracture be at all trivial? Beat walter over the head with it.......

So....if you drop any of your "metal" gear, do you retire it due to these microfractures?? I would think not...just because something is inexpensive doesn't mean that it won't handle a small amount of abuse. I would imagine you would have no problems using a 60 dollar ATC to belay or rap...if it had been dropped!!

Stick it to a plaque and hang it in reminder of why it is bad to drop your ATC.
