angry wrote: sungam wrote: Any progress in your bro's recovery, angry? I'm in a coffee shop in Moab right now, Saturday is always a good time to take a rest day when you don't work. Well, I just got off the phone with him moments ago. He's doing well. Sometimes it takes a little prompting to get him to say something, it's not from lack of something to say but more about trouble putting words to it. I called him to tell him that I sent (fuck I crushed) Broken Brain with a "Northern Colorado Rehab Hospital" shirt on, I thought he'd find that funny. Hopefully in a few years he'll do the same. He's in school this semester, he's lost his Ipod, glasses, and phone several times but eventually keeps finding them. His short term memory still suffers but it's ok. All the constant social interaction of school keeps his brain busy and he's getting more talkative. At the football games he ends up selling candy with the swim team instead of watching, which is what he'd be doing if he was still on the team so that a good thing. He is a Junior again this year and will not graduate with his class, he should graduate with the current junior class though. All his classes are easy this year, to sort of warm him back into things and next year should be a more normal senior year. The recruiter brought the climbing wall to the school the other day, he was the fastest kid in his class up the hardest route. 6 months in the hospital, a brain tumor, and a stroke but he's still my brother. I'm glad to hear he at least remembers how to move (it was probably 5.8). Warning Not Vegan FriendlyHe's been shooting his bow a lot, it's good for strength and coordination. Well, anyway he shot a Pope and Young antelope last week. I'm not sure I could get a trophy antelope with an arrow. I'm pretty proud of that. What's left to be determined are what his physical limitations are and whether or not he's college material. Right now, I'm hopeful he'll be leading a pretty normal life. i'm really glad to hear your bro is doing well. i'll have to call my little bro some time and see how he's doing.

justroberto wrote: cigarettes and nudie bars, hopefully. Not quite. He's back in school, taking modified classes and struggling to keep his grades passing. It's probably because he remembers being a straight A student and the material seems so easy that he doesn't pay attention. It's all part of him not accepting his new self yet. He did join the swim team this winter and managed to swim about the same times as he had last season. Even a couple PR's. Not bad considering the year he's had. He got invited on an all expenses paid guided hunting and fishing trip to Alaska this August. By all expenses I mean they're flying him there, buying him binoculars, a rifle, scope, outdoor clothes, and paying to ship the meat back. I'm eating caribou steak this fall. The 7% of the tumor that they weren't able to remove is not growing, it's completely dead. That's good, there was a chance he'd need another surgery but it doesn't look like he will. Of course they'll monitor the little chunk the rest of his life so there won't be any surprises with it. I wish I could say that he's back to normal and taking college prep courses like any other 18 year old. Maybe in another year. He's come so far this year, hopefully he'll come just as far next.

hey, dude, glad to hear that your brother has made so much progress! good to hear, too, that he's feeling better, even if his academic life is not yet again all that it once was. tell him evil christina says hey, and continued wishes for progress. and, also, he's 18 now, and as such is fair game for lewd comments about hot swimmer boi's, yes?

Wish him a HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! When I was that age you could buy beer in most states. It is good to hear how far he has come and how well he is doing. It must be so hard to adjust though. Good luck, too.

Thats awesome news man. The tumors not growing he's swimming strong and still making progress in recovery. Given the circumstances, you can't ask for much more than that.

Thanks guys. He told me tonight he'll join club swimming over the spring and X-country next fall and swim again in the winter. Still hasn't decided if he wants to take his old summer job back working at a scout camp or if he wants to stay local and work at the pool. I'd rather see him stay at the pool. I worked at that pool when I was his age, not only will he make lots of friends his age, see lots of girls (that I'm not allowed to notice) in bikini's, but he's got like a 65% chance of getting laid. I want only what's best for him. That and I'll be able to take him climbing some. Everyone in my family including him has always been above average at what they choose. My sister dropped out of HS and is a fucking forensic pathologist for example. DO NOT play scrabble with my dad, you've been warned. My brother was never raised to be average, it's a real challenge for him to accept that he might not be the brightest kid in the class anymore.

65%? Those are big numbers, John. Drop those sneakily into conversation and he'll spend the summer at the pool for sure. Good to hear that all's going well.

Angry, man, sound like things are going good for your bro. To bounce back that much after everything he's been through... abso-fukin'-lutely amazing! Seriously! Keep giving him encouragement and forward all of our well wishes man. He may find it hard, but DAMN.... there's not many folks around that could survive through that let alone still accomplish that much. He's got the tuff SOB award in my books. Buy him a good Scotch on my behalf for his Birthday. I'll pay ya back whenever I meet you in real life... but seriously, make sure it's a good Scotch... not some imatation BS... I know you're a good bro and will make sure he know's the value of a good scotch, and fine women... or is that a good woman and fine scotch.... ...hmmmm, I think I need to another drink to think about that one.... BBBBWWWWaaaahahahahahha! All the best man!

There are SO many directions I could take "scout camp" and "chances of getting laid," but unfortunately all are expressways to the land of Tuphar.

Not 65% better than the scout camp job. That would be implying that his chances would be greater than zero at camp and they are not.

I think if you told just about any 18 year old guy that his chance of getting laid was anywhere above.....oh, say .00000001%, he'd see that as promising odds. Glad it sounds like he's going to be physically recovered, but really hope the frustrations with his metal ability don't drag him down. That aspect can't be underestimated. It's as serious as someone who used to climb 5/whatever and was all about that, and then got injured finding they can no longer climb that grade. More serious, of course, because his is all-encompassing and climbing is...well, it IS just climbing. But the analogy is relatable to this group.
