The 2008-2009 Ice Conditions Thread

Yep, it's that time of year again... when I sit looking at the ice melting in my scotch, wishing I were in the Southern Hemisphere (even though recent reports indicate the ice sheet off Antarctica is continuing to melt in spite of the winter conditions there).

Anyone got any good pics from seasons past to share? Perhaps a little something to take the sting outta winter's heat.

I'm hoping this thread will be a little different from last years. It seems some got the impression that the ice conditions were specific to the Wasatch. While frequent updates on my local conditions might lend that impression, as winter approaches please feel free (one and all) to post up facts and heresay about conditions in your area.

I'll start. This is pretty much what the ice in my area looks like right now:

I've finished the Scotch, the ice melted quickly.

edit to add:

each post should have one of two things or both: a nice pictshure of some frozen goodness, or a conditions report of what you've seen recently.

A little more my level, a route I really hope to do this year (okay, still not likely that I'll hual my sorry ass up it)

Hell yes. I was browsing at the local outdoor store a few days ago looking for Chacos or Tevas and found a pair of brand spanking new Nepal Evo GTX for $200. Forgetting that I had 2 other pairs of ice climbing boots - I bought them! Now, I've been dreaming about ice. I think I'll go climb the 30' high wire fence at the local baseball field with my poons and tools to warm up for winter!

Hmmm, I'll be needing a new pair of boots this year. I'm hoping to score a pair second hand. Figure this would be a good place to start.

In most boots I think I'll need a 42.5. I sure wouldn't mind finding a pair or Nepal Evo GTX in my size out there. Angelic

You might want to have a look at the Scarpa Summit GTX. There's a woman specific model available at MEC. My wife loves hers. Narrower heel and extra warm (women tend to get cold feet). Perfect for WI and confortable for long approaches. They are cheaper then the Nepals. I've seen them for $300 in the US.

Pic that I took of a climber on GBU in the Ghost river Valley, AB. Skinner uplaoded it to the site before I could.

A pic of Skinner seconding a pitch on Wully Canyon in the Ghost River Valley, AB.
On the lead I was pummled by spin drift. Snowing around 10cm/hour that day, everyone had their avi gear. Good times. The "snow ledge just below him is actually a 4 or 5 foot deep accumulation of spindrift deposit that only the Pruvian Andies Mountain Gods can explain as to why/how it was staying where it was.

I didn't get out much last winter (a shame considering how great it was in Utah). Hope to remedy that this year.

Laphroig? A fine malt, for sure, but not nearly the best Islay has to offer. I find that it has a discernible, yet disagreeable edge to it. What a scent, though.

I'm assuming you want to split the gear rather than spit on it.

Would you really want to?

He did have some nice screws but I don't know if I'd want much else.

Not really dirty. Just minerals in the water.

There is a lot of yellow ice out there. And no there isn't a sewage treatment plant above the routes.

Its a tailings pond.

I hate to be rude, but this is an ice conditions thread, NOT a gear thread.
How is that fair? You're singling me out because I'm your wife. You were a really good husband you'd find me a pair of ice boots like how I found YOU and pair of ice boots online.

I wuntz new boots :(.

Andy coming up to the tunnel through the cornice at the exit of central gully right hand. (I was trying to climb it the day before while some guy was digging it, I was freaking out at the amount of shit coming down as I figured the frikin cornice was collapsing)

A friend climbing a melting route in the gorms.

Waterfall gully. On my todo list:

I'm assuming you want to split the gear rather than spit on it.

Would you really want to?

I was up at Mt Gilbert & Thompson in the Eastern Sierra last weekend (July 13, 2008).

The Gilbert Couloir is nonexistent...

The Thompson glacier has a BIG crevasse...

And the Harrington Couloir is in good shape.

The left side of the couloir has good alpine ice most of the way. Once the temps cool down it will be even better.

Rumor has it the Moynier couloir is also in good shape right now. The Knudsen and Smrz couloirs are melted out.

Enjoy!

We just had a hailstorm here, so there is plenty of ice in the garden at the moment, but i guess that doesnt count.
So for the conditions: Baden Württember, Germany: Summer. no ice climbing in sight.

But even in winter there ice none. Or at least normally and legaly.
Heres a few crappy cellphone shots from last years spectacular conditions two days before christmas.

And one week later in Kandersteg CH it got much better (apart from the 3 hour drive right after new years eve). So heres some ice pr0n for your viewing pleasure:

Hopefully i will get some ice in two weeks.

last week, I camped out at a site near Rawlins, on a portaledge hung from my truck's rack. The wind howled off the continental divide, i shivered in my 40deg. bag for a while, till I just couldn't stand it any more and jumped up to throw on a pair of sweat pants.

...and the other day I noticed the geese starting to fly about in formation, as if they're warming up for the longer flight coming up... making sure the youngsters know what's expected of them.

gotta order my new tools and ropes tomorrow.

yes, it's rapidly approaching, though still just far enough away to get the gear in order with a little time to spare.

I once spent the weekend after Columbus day wading through fluffy thigh deep snow on Mt Washington, have climbed Pinnacle prior to Nov.1st, and last year ran up Shoestring before thanksgiving. By my count it just might be less than 60 days away....................

Which if it happens again means 3 years of touching snow/ice 8 months of the year.

i've brought over wine and whiskey from overseas before i was 21....it worked every time. thought that was BEFORE 2001 and all the added shite that occurs in customs. i'm also a us citizen, so probably had it easier

that being said, i'm an isle of jura drinker myself, though can't find it here stateside.

when i was living in edinburgh though i did have an inkling that was going to be the case, so i made sure to make up for it by drinking a few years worth while there Cool

I got us and uk citezenship, so shouldn't be too bad, but still, can't you get busted just for having it? Maybe I could, like, have it gift wrapped and say it was from my mother to an old friend?

^^this will not work. Being underage, you are not allowed to even posses olcohol, and you think the customs guy wouldn't jumpz at the opportunity to snag a $100 bottle of the amber goodnezz?

I wouldn't worry about it. I travel back and forth from Scotland at least 3 or 4 times a year and every time I have a few bottles of whisky in my bag. no customs officer is going to care if you have a few bottles in your bag, he's more interested in the guy with 2 kilos of black tar heroin.

the only thing I'm ever concerned about is the bottles breaking in my check bags, so I surround them in bubble wrap.

as far as getting busted goes, just try not to be stupid.

liquor laws fall to the state, so it depends on where you'll be. a fine is almost guaranteed if you're charged with under age drinking. possession may be more lenient, and I'd like to believe most officers would let you go.

stricter states may suspend your drivers license and require you attend AA classes, but that doesn't apply to you.

I think the only problem you would run into is customs issues, that's when they would confiscate any alcohol or tobacco you bring into the country. but since that's a federal issue they can't actually charge you with any under age violations.

if you send something by mail mark it as a "Rare Collectible Malt" and it might make it though customs. or call Royal Mile Whiskies and they'll find a way to get it to the states for you if you buy through them.

Twice I had booze confiscated while crossing the border, no fines just a lecture from the customs officials. I wouldn't worry, usually the customs officials never realized I was under age. I mean who's doing math when 200 people just exited a plane.

While traveling in America it is all dependent upon the state, and most are pretty strict. However, if you never show your US passport and only go by your British they may let you go with warnings.

I liked my old one, but they went and changed their harness system and I can't wear the new one without a decently thick hat (which isn't too bad 'cause my Petzl helmet is too small to wear with a thick hat with...but it sucks 'cause now I'm usually tossing two helmets in the car before we head out if I'm not sure how cold it'll be).

I was in toys-r-us, and noticed that the Tonka Toy hard hats are of a higher quality construction!
I think at last count I had 8 cracks in mine.
I also hate the way it sits on my head, with no suspension to speak of, just that piece of foam right on top of your head so that there is no airflow/ventilation, which causes me sweat my a$$ off even in winter.

So as soon as the ice is in I'll post some pics of me climbing in my new Tonka Toy lid.

How's the access there.. wait till the river freezes solid, paddle across, or drop in from the top and build a station above the water?

Fuck man- what happened?

Sun, Sty-

Whats up guys, I will try to be there if I'm not working. To answer the question of what happened, I was on some late season ice in Redstone and tore my shoulder out. That was in April and my surgury was the 17th. of July. They had to cut muscles loose from my shoulder, shorten and then reattach them. They also repaired a labral tear with some hardware. I have about 20% mobility right now, but I ditch this sling on friday! we will see.

Rap in. There is ground under the far end, but it is just an ice shelf if even that for the rest. I'd guess that the river would freeze when it gets really cold and you could access the whole wall with a half rope rap down an easy gully.

The wall is almost a full 200ft, but I'm starting to think that Nathan grabbed the wrong photo.

I'm starting to think you guys don't know how to click on the photo and make it a little bigger.

Its the correct photo. It make it harder to see you because you are sorta bent over and blend in with the choss.

Northern corries of the gorms- that's goat track gully in Corrie an t'sneachda. The route I'm wanting to do is just to the left of it.
I'm email-chatting with my climbing partner now, trying to convince him it's worth the early start and the drive! And the weather!

Reports that in the Bow Valley the route Twisted Sister 'may' be climbable this weekend have been posted on one of the local boards!

Numerous other lines that would go mixed are being roported too!

Might be ice hunting season in the Canadian Rockies... at least untill later in the weeek when it warms up.

I saw climbable ice today. Will post pics when I can download the camera.

Heard reports that ice was climbed near Canmore this weekend.

So you're looking foreward to the weekend, then? Wink
How long till it's totally solid? Already? (I've never climbed a waterfall before)

Well more looking forward to tomorrow.
And it's already seen a few accents this year. It is "GAME ON!" in the Great Canadian Chossies!

I will admit that ice has been the furthest thing from my mind the last two weeks that we have been here at the Red, but those pics make me HOT for some ice.

Well, rumor has it here in Bozeman that the ice is coming in. It was a nice sunny day at Practice Rock today, but I spoke with a gal who told me that she had gone up with binoculars and observed a bunch of climbs coming in. She mentioned specifically that the Genesis Area was forming pretty nicely. I am super ready to sink the tools in some ice this winter!!!

I am way too tired to have a credit card.
I just bought a new set of tools (grivel carbon fiber babies), a new lightweight alpine axe(grivel nepal light), and a new set of crampons (G14 GSB's) all for less then the RRP of the set of axes!
Roll on the winter!

And I will have to add that today all of those climbs pictured were climbed. Richard and myself on the left route in the first pic. Will Gadd and Raphael Slawinski on the right route of the first pic. And another party on the route in the last pic.

2008/2009 ice season is now seeing regular accents on multiple climbs in the Canadian Rockies. And there is only more coming in F A S T !!!!!!!!!!!!! That's right.... the Canadian's were first, again.

You'll have to let us know how those GSB's fare. I haven't heard any feedback on them
