Particles more energetic than the LHC can produce hit the atmosphere daily, and we're still here. Even if it were, and we did manage to create one, it would be so small and have such a high temperature that they would evaporate in microseconds. What are the best English language sites on which to watch this? Any real time stuff? What time (Phoenix time) is the switch being thrown? Are they actually going to really do anything with it the first day or are they going to ramp it up slowly? I want to vent some plasma from the giant Tokamak sitting in my back yard that I got off of Russian Ebay. Sort of a "salute". This is about the best I've found, and it's updated frequently: http://www.bbc.co.uk/...igbang/updates.shtml And if you're into this, then here's a nice hires wallpaper for your box... (Click it - It gets much bigger ) Looks kinda like a big robotic sphincter. And if you are interested in this, but know nothing about how it works, just clicking through the photo gallery and reading the captions will teach you quite a bit. http://www.bbc.co.uk/...igbang/gallery.shtml

O yeah... at least one reason why it's a very good thing that it's 100m underground. Each beam has enough energy in it to instantly melt 500kg of copper.

So it seems the startup went flawlessly - better than expected, in fact. But if things do go wrong, don't worry - we're in good hands...

I've got full faith in the scientists involved, but you can be goddamn sure i will be keeping my shotgun loaded until they are sure no alien life forms made it though. And then for a little while longer to keep the mind control drones away.

I'll keep my crowbar and trusty zero-point-energy-field manipulator to hand, just in case.

The Large Hadron Collider should not be confused with the large hardon collider, which is something else entirely.
