Superclip or Squid?

Curious to everyone's thoughts on which is a better stick clip, the superclip or Trango squid. I have used the squid and liked it, but found it to wear quickly. The superclip works great too, but does not have the option of unclipping or clipping a rope into a hung draw.
Thoughts?
Thanks!

Im a big fan of that long stick, adhesive tape, and a little twig in the gate of the biner.

A spring clamp.

They cost about $2 and will last as long or longer than your "pole".

And you can still do all the stuff you can do with the other ones if you are any good.

I have this and the Epic stick clip. I'd suggest going with the metal clamp instead of plastic.. i have had some trouble with mine not gripping the biner correctly

I still can't believe people would pay money for something like a stick clip.

Why not just top rope the thing?

...oh yeah, you are.

Still "sticking up" for stick clippers eh jake? I still have never needed a stick clip, but if I do ever find that "deadly first bolt" you warned me about, I'll be sure to grab the nearest twig. Wink

I recently turned down a stick clip offer at the Red, on a route that apparently "requires one".

The woman asked "Would you like to use our stick clip?"

I said "No thanks, I don't like stick clips"

She said "Well I don't like broken backs"

Needless to say, I was kinda nervous getting to that first bolt!

my list of suggested climbs you should give a shot without stick clipping.. i've done all of these.. cept 100%.. there are many others but i won't put those since i haven't done them.

Things as they are now .12a Jimmy cliff
Cereal killer .11c Main cliff
Three easy pieces .11a Upper vadar
Squall .10d upper vadar
100% Columbian .11c Parking lot wall

You send any of these Joe ?

I have a squid and I love it. I don't really use the ability to take down draws too much, but I appreciate having that flexibility in case I need it.

I haven't had any problems with durability but if that is a big concern with you than you can go with one of the cheaper options that others have suggested. From what I have seen most of the homemade stick clips work just as well at putting up draws or just ropes as a Squid does. They just can't take draws down

As far as superclip vs. squid, I would just spend the extra ten bucks(or just find it on sale for $20 like I did with a simple google search) to get the increased functionality of a squid. Otherwise I would say that you have to decide between squid or a homemade rig, and that just comes down to personal preference and money. And how badly you want to be able to spray on internet forums, but if you really want to spray hard you really shouldn't get a stickclip in the first place.

No, I haven't. I've only been to Rumney once, on the way back from Cannon, so I was only there for a day or so. I wasn't at any of those walls though. I do trust you though, that there are some sport routes that are dangerous without a stick clip.

I remember the first time I saw someone using one. I had only climbed trad up until that point, and we were on a trip to the New. They were pre-clipping the first and second bolts, and I was a little confused, but curious. Then, after the guy topropes up to the second bolt, he clips into it, gets the stick handed back up to him, and stick clips the THIRD bolt! After that I just put it off as a bunch of looneys.

Later that night at the fire I asked my buddy if he saw it, and he laughed and made it all clear to me.

I guess maybe my first impression of stick clipping has left a bad taste in my mouth, but like I said, if I ever absolutely NEED to stick clip, I'll prolly try the tape+twig method.

Alright then. You're not SO stubborn that you'd either skip a route that needed one or would go smash your ankles being stupid :) I'm not sure what those people you saw were doing.. unless they were hanging draws for themselves. i mostly don't care what other people do as long as it's not unsafe or bad for the fixed gear.. ie TRing off quick clips.

i'm sad i lost my hiking stick at rumney. It was the super multi tasker.. super light.. saved my knees on the decents. stick clipped as high as i usually need for first bolts.. then folded up to 24" and could be strapped to my pack for hiking up :( so now i'm stuck back at paint poles again

I'll be the first to say there are people who way over use stick clips. But in sport climbing they do have a place. They are a tool, the same as hangdogging or any other sport tactic.

I use an old extendable mop handle and fashioned a, broken down, clothes hanger in a “Quick Clip” style. Colorado has a number of routes that start with a great deal of run-out. Top-roping isn’t an option, as the other gentlemen suggested, and I like to make a day of it as opposed to limping home.

The number one reason people use stick clips at sport areas is because they are gurls.
The reason that first bolt/hanger is twenty feet off the deck is for safety, if you don't have the balls or the skillz to get to it, then back off and do a easier route. Sometimes the reason the bolt is placed that high is for you to commit to the route, stick clips are are like wall street bankers, cheaters/lairs/whores.All bad and do nothing for the sport of climbing, in fact stick clips do not make you a better climber they make you a weaker climber, especially in the mind.
climbing is 90% mental 10% physical.
Stick clips when aiding are a diff mater altogether, especially when soloing, in that sense they would be fine.

I only spray to 5.8. I figure there are places where you need a stickclip, and for those spots, either bring it, or your A game and or a pad and or a pad and a group of spotters, or walk to the next route.

Easy choice.

Where do they grow snobs like these people? Climbing is not worth injury in my opinion...which is why i sport climb, or trad climb a number grade below my limit. Call me a wuss. I know. You're better, i'm worse, you're smart, i'm stupid, you're attractive, i'm not good looking.

So, does anyone actually have a superclip? Doesn't sound like many use them, but I have a few votes for the squid! Thanks!
