Oh yeah - an idea... Lots of people have said the front page photo element needs improvement. It would be nice to have featured photos back to being a focal point on the front page.

Jay, this is great, congratulations! As far as changes, is there any hope for the route database getting better? or at least, less-messed-up? please?

I'm pretty sure the NRDB area managers are working at that right now. If you feel like you know your local area well and want it sorted, you can PM DDT and let him know.

(I actually have three lists: my ideas, ideas generated in the M&E forum and ideas from users. Turds and trophies -- or some variation thereof -- now appears on all three.) Please see the part above about no promises, but I am actively investigating ways to empower users to moderate for themselves, thereby lessening the amount of third-party direct moderation required -- while also improving the signal to noise ratio. Post rating is one of those ideas. If anybody has examples of how other forums have done this, I'd love to hear them. I think everybody's interests probably intersect in this neighborhood. Personally, I hate moderating. And yet, at some point in time, I'm going to have to take responsibility for it. The less responsibility the better, IMO.

This is also now on all three lists. I confess, though, I'm behind the curve on this. I've never even been to Mountain Project's RDB, and I don't use this one all that much. Let's leave this subject here for the time being. When we're ready to approach it, we can get into far more detail.

For the trophies thing (but just in campground) you should add a *SWHA* tag.

Let's leave this subject here for the time being. When we're ready to approach it, we can get into far more detail. Mountain Project's is OK, but it is better than RC.com. The biggest issue with RC.com, in my opinion, is the need to go through counties to get to specific areas. I grew up in Maine, currently live in Mass, even lived in NH for a few years of my life and I still can't remember what county Cathedral, Rumney, and Cannon are in. I think one of the best things about MP's set up is how they have an easy-access link to the major climbing areas of each state without having to go through the different hierarchies. It isn't perfect, but it saves a lot of time over RC.com, so much so that I almost exclusively go there for route info. If I need route info from RC.com, I actually find it easier to google the route and click the RC.com link that comes up. Not sure if this would be an unintended result by improving the route database, but the current setup also makes linking photos to be a major pain in the ass. However, I will say that I really like the way RC.com makes it easier to get to and through the various forums and threads. It is a much better setup than what MP has. I'm sure there could be some improvements, such as quick links to the most popular forums on the main page, but the current setup does make it easy to read and respond, thusly encouraging the current economic crisis (but hey, there have to be some sacrifices, right?).

Congrats! You da man! Okay, suggestion box is open? Here's mine: I know this won't be popular, but when a photo featuring a climb is submitted, you need to go back to forcing the photo to be linked to the routes DB (with exceptions). The way it is, now, frankly sucks. On half the pics, you don't know what's pictured. And what's worse, you miss out on all those pics when you go to the routes DB, because they're not linked to the area or the climb. [/rant] Anyway, Cheers! Hope you have fun with the new job! GO

GO On another note, I think that area managers from the NRDB should be able to move pics. I mean, if someone links a photo to Slime Wall when really it's on Rannoch Wall (just around the corner, but facing a different aspect) it could get confusing. If the area manager could just move it to the other section (rather then having to ask a photo ed to do it) it could make some things a bit cleaner.

It'd be awesome to have the ability for users to customise their list of smilies, you know add them from outside sources. This way whenever one needs an apropriate smily it is right there in the list from which to select. I support adding the SWHA to any easily selectable list as well. Having easily accessible lists of url's handy when posting a reply or new thread would be handy too. Maybe a pop up window with our favourites might be an idea. I support the turds and trophies and the nicknames below our names too. Userbased moderation would rool. Give dingus his nukular button.

I still think that this kind of content has NO place on this site.
