I also made this specific suggestion to j_ung.

Folks who think hateful, obviously out-of-line posts should be deleted on sight are calling for a heavier mod hand than we're willing to swing right now. But, that doesn't mean those posts won't be moderated in some other fashion. Asking for an edit, PM-ing the user... these and other, less intrusive, moddings might work over time.

I've always said that those tactics should be tried first, especially with members who have not shown themselves to habitual trouble makers, before wholesale deletions and time outs start getting handed down.

Sometimes people will refuse and mod action will have to be more overt but I have had several post deleted (without any form of notification) that I would have been happy to edit or "self mod" if asked to do so.

Obviously some things need to be removed right away and can't wait for the poster to come back online but a lot of things can wait a bit, in the interest of respect and facilitating/encouraging self moderation.

I hope the era of J_ung can be one of friendlier and more cooperative mod/user relations.

Given the forum split, someone may want to update the now "Injury Treatment and Prevention" forum description to prevent confusion. It is more applicable to the Accident/Incident forum than injury prevention, particularly the bolded part:

In a sport with this level of risk you have to be serious about safety. Share your experiences, and learn from others. Let's honor those who've passed away by not repeating mistakes! Please keep posts factual and of high quality.

Friendlier remains to be seen.

As for more cooperative, I think we're off to a good start. I can cite dozens of cases so far in which user-generated feedback has been either requested, responded to or straight-up implemented.

That will continue to be the case. The very first thing I consider in most situations is how to involve users in the decision-making process. Sometimes that will be a general call for feedback. Other times it's requests for advice from specific users I PM.

I suppose there are a few obstinate misanthropes amongst the user base that will alwayse cause some trouble.

You're very welcome. As for the misanthropes, it wouldn't be RC.com without 'em. I just want to keep that stuff of the red forums. If you're wondering what a red forum is, check the announcement. Wink

One lesson I have gleaned from reading every edition I could get of Accidents in North American Mountaineering: I will always wear a helmet whenever my feet are/will be above my own height. In the American Alpine Club's analysis, most people who have died/been crippled in climbing accidents would be alive and/or walking today had they only worn a helmet.

I'll take the advice of dozens of professional mountain guides, informed by painstaking analysis of thousands of incidents, over worthless pathetic interweb trolls who have most likely never climbed anything beyond the stairs from their basement "apartment" to papa's kitchen, any day. You've got to question the worth of everything one says about climbing once one says that wearing a helmet marks you as a "n00b" who should not be trusted to belay at the crag.
