We're looking at getting show shoes for xmas for ice climbing approaches. I was going to try to get a women's snowshoe for myself, but does it make that much of a difference? The biggest difference is the shoe width, right? Or are there other things too? In some brands there's a noticeable width difference, in others they're almost the same as then men's (but come is girlier colours).

Differences depend on the brand. With tubbs (whom i'm not a huge fan of period) there's really not much of a difference either than a shrink and pink.

I've got a pair of Atlas Elektra's 1225's, and atlas makes women's models with a tapered back because women walk slightly more duck foot than men, so a narrower tail prevents stepping on the tail or walking akwardly to prevent that.

The 12 series have climb bars, which rock.

you can see the tubbs aren't that narrow in back

I get people returning broken tubbs a few times a week with broken bits and pieces. Have never seen a pair of atlases come back except when someone ran over them with their truck.

Yes, I was looking at the Atlases vs a brand made in Canada.
http://www.rei.com/product/759840
VS
http://www.mec.ca/...;bmUID=1228150706936
The Women's GVs were a little narrow compared to the Men's but not like the difference between the men's and woman's Atlas shoes.

Biner, you like the Atlas? What would be the difference between to 1027 Plus and the 12 series? The 1027 Plus looks the same as the 1127. Is this correct or is REI fooling me with the wrong photo?

Good to know you approve of the Atlas geometry in general and find that the width between brands does make a difference. So people actually break them because they're not narrow enough? Or is it because of other problems?

i have the 10 series. i think the only difference is a lift bar in the 12's. this helps in steep terrain.

the only other snowshoes that i would recommend is the msr. we rent them out at the ski hill. great for steep terrain, nice binding system most snowboarders i know user them for accessing the backcountry. they are a bit more pricey than the atlas

I guess that's why I'm looking at these Atlas 10 Plus series from REI. In their photo they have heel lifters. In fact, they look just like the 11 series I was looking at at MEC.

REI - Atlas 1027 Elektra Plus Snowshoes - '07 Women's:

http://www.rei.com/product/759840

MEC - Atlas 1127 Snowshoes (Women's):

http://www.mec.ca/...;bmUID=1228161163709

That's why I'm wondering if they might have screwed up the photo or something on the REI site. For $100 less than at MEC (ignoring exchange rates) its a pretty darn good deal.

they added the heel lift to the ten series last season.

the decking material is MUCH burlier on the 12, the binding much more padded and comfortable with freeze proof straps, and the crampons are insane! real squirell stompers.

i'll try and take a picture of mine, need to go dig them out anyway!

also, the metal frame is tapered instead of tubular, which makes the frame stronger.

all atlas crampons are stainless steel, whereas only the tubbs mnteering models have stainless.

Actually she wants to climb on ice. But that damn snow keeps getting in the way.

Also, slogging through or across snow is definitely not a cold activity.

Ahem.

Pardon me for asking, but what are you and Macherry doing in the ladies room?

It's a bit like entering the ladies washroom and finding 2 men in there. Though that incident only happened 1-3 times when I was younger then I realized I'd entered the Gents washroom by mistake.

I thought the ladies room meant no men allowed Wink

Awkward........
Unimpressed

And no, it does not mean that men aren't allowed. What a silly notion that would be. Mr. Monkey was just tossing a joke back to a mutual friend who had just tossed a joke to me....all on topic I might add (kinda).

BTW - I still haven't gotten my answer from Biner about the stepping on them because they're not narrow enough, destroying them, or if they got destroyed for other reasons.

interesting question. since this thread is a discussion about snowshoes and rockie did step in with a stupid question, i would probably let it slide. i've got a pretty thick skin and if a regular user said it, i would take it as a friendly joke.

it would be different if the thread was of a serious nature and and a user came in and insulted other users, just for the sake of being an ass.

it's all about context.

I'm not sure that stepping on your tails will lead to ultimate destruction, it's just awkward and will trip you...it's lie stepping on your shoelaces.

Tubbs get destroyed pretty easily, their weakspot is the bolt that holds the binding to the shoe.

Snow shoes, yes I may buy a pair, or I may hire again from MEC on a pay as you go basis as for last year.

Prefer the Atlas ones to the MSR but that's just me. I know a lot of people seem to like MSR.

'Rocky' would be a guys name, 'Rockie' would be a chick or a gay dude. Which a gay dude would still be a dude. So you can understand the confusion.

Snow shoes, yes I may buy a pair, or I may hire again from MEC on a pay as you go basis as for last year.

Prefer the Atlas ones to the MSR but that's just me. I know a lot of people seem to like MSR.

good, now that we've established you're female, you can accept that i'm a female too!!!

Pardon me for asking, but what are you and Macherry doing in the ladies room?

It's a bit like entering the ladies washroom and finding 2 men in there. Though that incident only happened 1-3 times when I was younger then I realized I'd entered the Gents washroom by mistake.

I thought the ladies room meant no men allowed Wink

well, not that it matters, but the last time i checked.........I was a woman!!!!!!!!!!

men are allowed in the ladies room too!!!!
Banz him Modcherry!!!!!

That was slander if I ever saw it!!

okay, i thought rockie was a female
I thought he was a dude.

Rockie is a guys name.

Ah shit......

'Rocky' would be a guys name, 'Rockie' would be a chick or a gay dude. Which a gay dude would still be a dude. So you can understand the confusion.

My bad.

Rockie as I happen to love the Rockies Smile
Rockie as the name relates to Rock Climbing somewhat.

You're bad, yes you sure are Tongue

Actually, I think it's Art, at last year's "pimps and hos" party.

Anyone remember using the snowshoes that look like wooden tennis rackets? (Or am I just really old...)

These new ones actually look like they might be fun.

To be fair, ma's picture is of a coffee mug.

And it could be interpreted as Mac Herry...I can see it.

Yeah, I think she meant the mug picture. Just for the record, I am a woman despite my non-picture (technologically stupid) and a gender nonspecific user name.

i always read it as a pun off the french. as in, aw haw haw, mon ami, ma sherrie...

...or something like that.

though, it'd reasonably obvious from post poster's text what their gender is. i never had any trouble pegging rockie (or macherry) as a female poster.

though, in general, it does seem women on this site are better at picking up on the gender of a writer. i've been mistook for a dude a lot on here when i had no pic up, but never by another female.

it is a bit of a pun, plus it's my initials/last name. i truly was not thinking i would ever become a regular poster when i originally signed up for my account.........who knew, i was just going to lurk.

way back when i first started to post in the coffee thread, dookie thought i was a guy because i knew about wrenching mountain bikes. it was quite funny!!!

yeah i find gender easy to pick up. definitely different posting styles.

that could almost be a thread to itself

dude, i saw you profile pic; you're a middle aged canadian. don't say biatch when you're trying to say you're NOT fucking stupid.

and aggressive isn't a trait anyone has ever debated about me. don't bandy it about like you won a prize for (belatedly) gaining the ability to recognize the obvious.
