It seems volume one has maxed out at 15 pages (at least for me, on 3 separate computers and 2 different networks)!!! It had a good run, and a lot of nice photos, a few even spectacular!

Time to turn the page...(but the original can be found here Volume 1 thanks to blondgecko!)

A Snout With A Snoot...Pentax K10D, FA 43mm Limited, Elinchron Skyport wirless trigger and snooted Vivitar 285HV at 1/16 power! Just a JPEG extraction from the RAW file, hoping to get a bit more detail in the highlights when I convert the RAW file

In the clouds of NH. Nothing like 100% humidity and low cloud cover!!! The 50mph wind gust were an added bonus

I'm planning on spending some of my holiday time going back and re-working a bunch of my old photos from when I didn't know as much as I do now about Photoshop. Here's one I was playing around with last night.

Place is Qing Ren Gu (Lovers' Valley), Huangshan, China (there's a scene in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon where a couple of fighters run across the top of this pool). It's actually a mosaic of eight exposures (no wide angle lens for me at the time... just the Pentax Optio WP).

Original:

Re-done:

- added a fair bit more pop to the colours of the trees (and, to a lesser extent, the pool)
- heavily burned-in the dark tones of the rocks around the rim, to bring some contrast back.
- copied, cloned and overlaid (multiply mode) a piece of rock to add some texture to the badly blown-out slope on the left.

Not bad, I assume it was JPEG?

Doesn't give you a ton of room to do these edits, but at screen size they are better!

It does appear there is a magenta shift though!

Recent ice storm that took out power to 1.25M business and homes. And a new ice climbing area I discovered in New York. A few of our friends are still without power on day #6. We were without power for 40 hours, and then 6 hours!

The ice storm was actually a test of several things:

1) The ability of my old Kiron to work on digital sensor (some said it would ghost and flare), this lens is incredible! Low CAs, no vignetting on digital, and no ghosting. Very compact, F/2, well built, and tack sharp on both film and digital.

2) The ability to use my Acer Netbook to organize, edit and upload RAW files.

3) The quality/ease of use of UFRAW, GIMPSHOP, and FastStone Image viewer. All 3 programs are free, and use VERY little system resources.

Suffice to say the lens, netbook, and software worked really well. And it validated my choice to eschew the Epson P-6000 and go with the netbook. The advantage of the Netbook is that I can not only dump images to it like the P-6000 since it has a 160GB hard drive, but I can also sort, upload, and edit them. The netbook also allows me to do "tethered" shooting from the DSLR. Sure a laptop can do all of this, but the Acer One is EXACTLY 1/2 the form factor of a 14.1 inch laptop, and weighs about 50% as much.

Yeah, JPEG it was. No RAW capability on that camera. Pretty decent for what it is, though - the underwater and macro capabilities are really quite cool.

There probably is a bit of colour shift... hard to say how much, though. My other pictures from the same area show a fair bit of reddish tint in the rocks and the foliage (it was autumn at the time). The water's pretty much as I remember it... believe it or not, that pool is actually about four metres deep!

This is what it looked like under the water:

The place was actually incredibly crowded - the hardest part of taking photos there was getting shots with nobody in them. Swimming is absolutely banned there, on pain of... I don't know what... so at least there weren't people in the water to worry about.

As for the underwater shot - the Optio WP is waterproof to 5 feet. Just stuck the camera under, took the series of shots (actually, a couple of series, just in case), and then spent the next 5 minutes trying to get some feeling back into my hands. That water was cold!

I never used the W20 I borrowed from my Dad under water, although it was in the water and rain quite a bit.

That pool is incredibly clear, looks like it's totally free of algae. Absolutely amazing!

I've yet to decide if I like that high sync effect you go for in the bottom photo Wes. I think that one is my favorite of this effect.

What was the shutter speed?

One from March 2007 actually. I posted one of these (i think) back then, but my brother wanted a few black and whites for his house since he moved in back in 2006...yikes...so I finally decided to run some off for him as a Christmas present. Unfortunately he's gonna have to mat and frame them, because they'll be getting here Christmas Eve!

This isn't the same photo but a different version (one was taken in the morning and one at night, this one had more ambient light from the skylights), but one that I really went at with all sorts of dogding and burning, a local contrast enhancements. Added some grain, and overall while I liked the original, this one is pretty much exactly what I wanted.

The bottom one is the only one of the set that uses HSS, (ISO 400, F16, 1/400) and I could have probably gotten away with standard synch if I wanted. The others are all studio strobes at 1/250th of less. Did a bit tonight outside with the white lighting and vagabond II and will post up a couple once I get them finished...

Some ballet...

A few from tonight. WL1600 with a vagabond II powerpack and 24" apollo softbox

I just got back from a day in Joshua Tree. There's a nearly a foot of snow covering everything out there after a big storm rolled through earlier this week. It was very beautiful out there.

From last night...more coming down now. I expect we'll finish up with 20-30 inches.

Took it out to an empty unplowed parking lot to test the AWD with the crappy stock tires (have a new set in the garage for the winter). Incredibly capable for an $18,000 Go-Kart! Handles the corners well (on par with a Mini), gets 30mpg on the highway, I'm averaging 27 overall! Could not be happier with any aspect other than the speed!

A crappy video of barely any of the fun, will do another tomorrow!

Wow, it should be a great wildflower season then.

Do you know if Death Valley got any snow from this? I'd assume so, that should also have a good wildflower season!!

Thanks much for the positive feedback It is a cool time for sure, and I am excited to try to do some more as well! And, you really don't need all that much power - I could have probably just used a single 580II in the softbox, though probably at close to 1/1, rather then 1/16th on the WL.

Here is another - you can see the ghosting from the really slow shutter speeds...

I like the flash with the sunsets a lot, the daylight ones with the HSS tend to not be a fave, but to each his own!

Some from this summer/fall. Trying to put my 2008 slide show together and finishing up a few leftover folders of images!

And from a little night skiing the other night on 2 feet of fresh powder! Actually an old Canon G3 with a Vivitar 285HV and Ebay slaves (super high tech setup), as I note in the blog, this shot wasn't the goal. I was going to backlight myself and also record the star trails wirelessly. Unfortunately it was about 13F outside and the triggers wouldn't fire (and I doubt the skyports would have either, MAYBE pocket wizards would have!!). So I worked with what I had, and just did the star trails with a little direct flash and a 15 second exposure! In hindsight, I'm not sure what sort of idiot goes outside in 13F temps and 30mph wind gust at sea level to mess with star trails and wireless strobing....so basically I got what I deserved!

...A hard core photo fanatic that's who! I do believe you have to suffer to get better. On big walls I have noticed that when things get really bad that's when you should start shooting!

Here's something I did the other day. I know it's odd but there is something about the light, lines and form that appealed to me.

I really hate this product shot, but it's the only way it will fit the layout and with all the set backs we've had I just have no f'n time and excuses, excuses... more excuses.

Still, I got a little bored at the end of the day and I like the hover plates. A slice of working in a very small studio.

Yeah. Just as my eyes start to follow the curve of the shoulders there's an abrupt halt to the image. It makes it feel a bit cut off to me, though not in any dramatic sense.

Great, thank you. I still have a lot of problems deciding where to make a crop.

Man you have a cramped space to work with ,but obviously you have found a way to maximze it!

Here's a shot of Doug Robinson of "Moving Over Stone" fame. This 2 part video series was one of the early, very successful videos about rock climbing movement.

Doug was one of a bunch of climbing luminaries at the 50th anniversary celebration of the first ascent of El Capitan last November.

I left my Nikon at home when we went canal boating in Burgundy and took my new Panasonic Lumix LZ7 point and shoot. Man I love this little camera.

The second last one was taken at the base of Le Saussois. I took my shoes so we spent the day bouldering on classic French limestone; the rope and gear unfortunately stayed home with the Nikon...sigh.

rockforlife,
To me the first thing my eye is attracted to is the diagonal log, but there doesn't seem to be anything special about it. It also acts as a visual brake, dividing the frame into a top half and a bottom half, keeping my eye from running through the photo from bottom to top or top to bottom.

I like the grass you used for the foreground, it adds depth to the photo and pushes my eye upwards. I also think you did a nice job of capturing the combination of golds and greens, in this peaceful scene.

I used this really terrible photo editing software, before i got photoshop. i used some kinda fire filter or something. and then increased the blacks and the shadows to get the black vignette. Other than that, i would have no idea how to reproduce it on photoshop, and to be honest that one was pure luck that it came out so good, i was just messing around.

Really like the muscisians and that abstract light shot.

I got inspired to try something different today.

The Time Keeper

D3, ISO 200, 110mm, 1/250, f22
Three flashes. Mixed Nikon CLS and PocketWizard triggers. Camera is set for tungsten white balance. Clock flash has a double dose of CTO gels to make it orange. Backlight flashes left at daylight balance to make them blue.

paul,

way too much good stuff. I like the Doug Robinson black and white, and the clock shot quite a bit.

actually this last page is pretty good all around from everyone involved.

well, I'll try to sneak a few in...

These first few are from August. Yeah, I just got to them recently. Really some decent stuff for a day that was largely spent hiking. We covered about 14 miles and 10,000 feet. I carried my carbon tripod, the 21mm DA, the 35mm DA, and a 55-300mm. Nice light kit.

This is from Beale St in Memphis over New Years weekend (more shots eventually to follow, perhaps by next January)...

Pentax K20D, ISO 800, 1/8th second hand held, f/4, DA 21mm Limited.

This is from Thanksgiving. Obviously it was run through the post processing washing machine since the base image was cute, but not what I wanted.

the base image was a K10D, and a 43mm Limited at f/2.8, bounce flash.

By the way, have I mentioned recently how much I hate the way rockclimbing.com resamples the images, EVEN when they are only 500px wide to begin with.

Thanks Pico,
I like the atmosperics and the composition of your Catskills Mountain shot a lot.

Also it looks like the Memphis shot looks very clean at ISO 800, want to see more of those.

Could you divulge your secret for processing the Thanksgiving shot? I really like that look.
Thanks!

Wow lots of good stuff being posted over the past couple weeks. It's inspiring me to get out and shoot more instead of climbing so much ;) I've been wanting to go out and get more shots of Los Angeles at night so that's going to be my next project when I can make some time.

Great shots everyone, I'm loving them!

A project of mine, on a long list, is Albany at night. My goal is parking top views of the city (and anything else that gets me broad scenes).

Unfortunately downtown Albany is largely 2 things at night, a place you don't want to be, and a place that goes home.

The capital area is fine for walking around, so is pearle st, but beyond that it's not a place to get intimate shooting up close scenes.

So that was where my Albany From Up High idea came into play...but like I said, it's on a long list of to-dos. Now that I have a real panoramic head, I should be able to do some interesting single and multiple row panoramics. Of course all this means I need to get out on the street/parking garages and shoot!

That's what I love about photography, no shortage of subjects or projects to get bored with.

A few more:

Adirondack Balloon Fest 2008. K10D and a Sigma 10-20mm @ 20mm.

Adirondack BBQ Festival:

Pentax K20D, and Pentax DA 35mm Limited

Still trying to decide if I like this one or not. Just playing on the see-saw in the park. Braced the camera by hand on the handle at my end, set the shutter to a longish exposure, and started firing away while moving the see-saw. Obviously my bracing could have been a little better (perhaps if I feel enthused I'll make up a jig to attach the camera properly) but I still think it works, in an abstract sort of way.

I'm not sure that it will be a horribly efficient effect if you have to drag the see-saw with you every time you want to use it.

I love the pose. I think you should repeat it, but use a bit of flash at the beginning to freeze a little bit of the action in the middle.

Pico, that balloon shot is wonderful. Great timing and expression.

Blodgecko I agree about the flash. Using it will up your percentage of useable shots plus still give you motion blur. I like your picture because most of the picture is blurry but the baby's eyes are relatively sharp and caught my eye immediately!

Here's a shot of my neighbor, who put up with me while I tried out an Octabox. The Octabox is basically an umbrella with diffusion material on the front. The inside is coated with a very shiny aluminum coating. The whole effect is to have a light that is soft but still hard enough to be punchy, and directional.

octoboxs look pretty cool - might look into one before long as well, though I really like the apollo softbox that I have now - pretty much the same thing, just square. Give a bit different look, esp. the catchlights in the eyes.

Just noticed this post...

I will have to look at the text file for the shot of my sister. I did mess with it A LOT using layers and various blending techniques so I'm expecting the text to be a mess since it records ALL the edits and undue/redos, basically all key strokes!. I know I used Nik Coloreffects monday morning (or was it Midnight) filter, but I also did a lot of selective masking of multiple layers,. I dodged the white on thermometer and burned the blacks, plus selectively sharpened the #s, her eye, etc.

Beyond that just a lot of trial and error. No filter by itself did what I wanted, So, as I'm finding out more and more, it was lots of layers.

One thing I'll note, is get a graphics tablet, even a small 4x6 inch one, I think mine is 5x7 and it blows even my high res laser mouse out of the water for editing speed when dealing with masking and layers.

The K20D high ISO is a bit better than the K10D in low key photos, and/or shadow areas. The K10D was (is, as it's my camera, the K20D is a test loaner for a lens review but I've had the K20D off and on since last May so I've used it enough to get more than a good feel for it), is amazingly capable in high key (hockey for instance). All in all though I'd say only about 1/3 to 1/2 stop difference in the two when two properly exposed images are compared. Maybe almost a full stop if JUST looking at the shadow noise.

A few more at ISO 800-2500 from Memphis...

Street shots aside from the groiup portrait were with the DA 21mm Limited, the basketball shots were all with the Voigtlander 90mm APO Lanthar (a manual focus lens), the group portrait was taken with the 43mm limited, as were the blues cafe shots.

The only thing I can say about the FedEx forum is, anyone who makes there living shooting at this place, should donate a percentage to the rest of us who get to shoot in dank dark dungeons. The lighting in this place was 1/500th at f/3.5 and ISO1600. Towards the end of the game I was shooting at 2500 ISO with a little more DOF at 4.5. When I shoot in Albany at the TU, a place with supposedly good lighting, I get maybe 1/320-1/400th at f/2.8 to 3.5 and 1600 shooting hockey which is brighter because of the ice! Plus, hockey is faster so 1/320th barely cuts it most of the time!

I was thinking about this when I looked at the image as well. I'm sure there are numerous ways to produce similar a similar effect, but I my first instinct to recreate that base look would be a combination of duplicate highpass (and inverted highpass) layers set to overlay or soft light and various saturation and curves adjustments. A fair bit of masking. I'd be interested to hear some of what was actually used.

Decided to try for a self-portrait at the end of a very long day of work, but only produced so-so results. I need an umbrella instead of the softbox for this sort of thing. Portraits are sort of my major weakness so I have to start scamming people into modeling for me.

I like your crop and use of color in the eyes. It somehow adds to the comptemplative/sad/tired look.

Do you want to use an umbrella thinking it will add a little more texture to your face?

Thanks in advance!

Yeah, I looked quickly at my photoshop edit text...it's 3.5MB, not for the image you guys asked about, but the whole edit text for a few months. I'll have to extract the files edit when I get a chance and see if I can whittle it down to the basics.

Here are a few I did last night for the K1000 USA tour. This is something I'm wondering if the bigger user communities do, but I'm doubtful.

Anyway, this camera is taking a tour around the US via UPS or personal hand offs if two shooters are in the same town.

Everyone gets two shots, and when the roll of film is done, someone throws a fresh roll in and it continues. The rolls go back to California where the camera originated, and will be processed, scanned and uploaded.

The camera is obviously in my possession right now, I haven't taken my shots. Trying to decide what to do, afterall, it's film, no delete button and only 2 shots!

These were taken for the map shot, where everyone snaps a photo of the K1000 on location, and it's added to the google map.

K20D, 35mm T&S, tilted, ghetto homemade light tent, 2 Viv 285HVs, 1 Pentax FGZ360, Elinchrom skyports.

And again, I don't understand why, 500pixel images are resampled to look like crap. I mean 500 pixels, is within the size of the webpage, someone at RC.com needs to look at this issue!

Paul_Y wrote:

There actually is a lot of texture already, but I blew it out because I was too lazy to retouch skin. I think I spent less than five minutes editing this time. While I'm not overly vain, I think anyone magnifying their skin that much on screen gets a bit self-conscious.

The flash was really close to my face and the softbox light tends to be more strongly directional, so I want to to see how much shaping effect the umbrella would actually have in comparison at that range. Actually, what I want is an umbrella with a gradient on the diffusion material, but I don't know if such a thing is sold. A ring-light would have been good fun too... just for kicks.

The other issue was with the physical size of the softbox and its general shape both in creating a catch light and trying to position the camera on the tripod tight into the diffuser.

A few shots from the capital, lets just say the 50mph wind gust were not really good for photography with long lenses or multiple panoramic shots. And yep, the first one is a busy mess with no focal point, sort of the point actually as you look at the styles of architecture it intersects along the way. Basically it sums the Plaza and capitol complex up nicely.

The digital camera I was using at the time was an Olympus C8080 zoom wide angle. I got cyan sky at high altitude and when saturating the jpg it just gets more cyan and unrealistic. I was looking for a digital filter for this but then on last years high altitude trip, I did not have the same problem, then using a Canon EOS 40D.

I believe shot jpg with an Olympus C8080 wide angle, at Blue Mounds State Park at Luverne MN. I cannot get the same out of a print as I can get off of my computer monitor.

Probably. It was hella loud for sure, even with ear plugs.

Off to shoot nickelback tonight, but here is something from last weekend - tweaking my off camera and PS work a bit...

Nice work Wes! And it looks like you usually have enough light to stop motion (even if it has to be at ISO 1600), an added plus!

Nice outdoor shot. Were you using a large light source? Very smooth look you got in PS.

Yeah, the lighting is usually OK, though it changes alot, and quickly. Also use a 135 f2 a bit as well, so that helps.

Was using a 28" apollo softbox with two 580 II's in it. And it is really close to her, right outside the frame. I really like the look it gives for sure.

Yeah, I know the colors are kinda shifted a bit as a result of some of the PS stuff. It didn't look to yellow on my main display, but I haven't calibrated that in a couple weeks.

A few new shots:

This one not so new, just a test shot for the Pentax 300mm F/4 DA*. Nice lens, solid build, sharp. Definitely not the best "lens test" conditions. ISO 640, 1/320th second f/4. Looks good even at 100%, so much for in camera shake reduction not working Wink. Although in fairness it was monopod mounted (i think).

This one is from Death Valley last week. Probably one of the most complex photos I have ever put together. We had no choice as the wind was whipping so I took a look at the map and decided to head for a canyon. The wind was still blowing in here, but much much less, and at times it was perfectly calm.

It's a long exposure (7 minutes), that is lit by both the moonlight, and also filled in with strobes. The original intent of the strobing was to just "separate" the arch from the background, but eventually we added varying degrees of light to the canyon walls to give it a little more texture than the moonlight would have given in such a short exposure. The shadows are actually moonlight though. I did similar shots on both film and digital and am expecting the film shot on Provia 100F (for 15 minutes) to be better since film doesn't have noise issues with long exposures and is still quite superior to digital in this regard.

Pentax K20D, ISO 400, DA 21mm Limited @ F/4, Pentax FGZ-360 flash handheld at various power outputs to paint light selectively.

That fish shot is simply beautiful.

So, I finally went out and bought Canon's "little white cannon" - the EF 70-200 2.8IS. A couple of shots from yesterday, in the botanic gardens:

First, my usual (and most photogenic) model:

... and an innocent bystander:

100% crop from the above, with no sharpening whatsoever:

Needless to say, I'm really happy with this piece of glass.

Nice work guys. Here is one from a Joe McNally workshop I just attended. Every morning we saw a lighting demo and then we split up into teams of three with a model to scout the location and find/make light of our own using small flashes. This one was made with two Nikon SB-800 flashes for rim lighting (along with the sun) and one gold relflector for fill.

Every day we would have a critique of the previous days images. No cropping or photoshopping allowed!

I used high speed sync at 1/1000 so I could get f2.8 for shallow depth of field. This is one of the huge strengths of high speed sync.

Nice image! Sounds like a really good workshop for sure.

How were you triggering the sb-800s? With the built in nikon wireless, radio poppers, or the new PWs? I love HSS, and use it quite a bit.

First of all, nice work Vorago especially for a first timer. You have a good eye for urban angles.

Thanks Wes,
I triggered the sb-800's with an infrared commander, the SU-800 which is Nikon's equivalent to the Canon ST-E2. The whole class was built around using whatever system you brought in iTTL mode and using exposure compensation to vary both the camera exposure and the flash output. We never did go to manual camera exposure or flash output. I think now that your radio poppers are the way to go rather than the infrared systems.

Here are a couple of more images made during the class. The first was made in an abandoned almond factory that our teams explored and made pictures in. The 2nd was in a restored Victorian era mansion. It was shot with a flash outside the window with a warming filter, one pointing at the painting and one at the wall at camera right.

Nice - like the new ones as well!

The poppers are cool, since you work with the same setup and technique as you do with the su-8000, you just don't have to worry as much about line of site, shooting outdoors, etc. And the new versions seem to fix most of the issues people had with the version 1 units.

I use canon's ettl a bit as well, mostly when the environment is changing rapidly. When I have the time to setup, or things aren't moving a whole lot, I try to get into manual mode, which also works well with the RP's. Since I can control the remote flash's power from the master flash, it is quick and easy to change things around a bit.

Can't wait to see some more images!

I see that PocketWizard is coming out with a version of their own wireless iTTL for Nikons at the end of next month. Hope is gets better reviews than their current Canon version.

Here are some more pix from the Joe McNally/Paso Robles workshop.

The interior wine cave has one flash way back camera left lighting the far barrels. There is another in the gap between the barrels camera right that is lighting the model's hair and the left hand barrels. Finally, there is a grided flash pointed at the model's faces on camera left. It was a real pain to get all the flashes to see the infrared signal from the SU-800. I ended up putting the unit on a light stand connected with an off camera iTTL cable so it could communitcate with all the flashes.

The two exterior shots were lit with variations of the first shot I posted. Two flashes for rim lights and a gold reflector for fill. In addition, the camera was set for "vivid" colors.

Nikon's infrared system isn't worth the shit in the head of the dude that thought it up nor all of the shit in the heads of the dudes that went along with it.

Cool shots though. A little hot on the far casks Paul. The bottom one is great.

I'd like to start playing around with strobes at some point. Those are pretty damn good - although you really need to get your models to relax a bit more!

Anyway, took the little guy to Australia Zoo today for his first birthday. A few snaps along the way:

Saw this at Rock Mnt. National Park. Baby Elk trying to cross a river and couldn't get up the further side. It had just given up and returned to our side. Just after photo it tried one more time and went up the futher side at a different point and was reunited with its mom.

The first tiger shot was actually just after we arrived at the enclosure, and before I knew what to expect. So the shutter speed was only 1/250, and there's a little motion blur in it. I still kinda like it, though.

I've started taking pictures from people in the street, I must say, it's something you need to get used to.

At first I felt very much like a voyeur or something like that.

This is one of the better shots of my first public roll...

You are brave to do that, especially with stranger's kids in the shot. You were probably very nervous. After you calm down a little try to really see what your camera is seeing and practice using some of the rules of composition. Not that you always want to follow the rules, but being conscious of them while you shoot will force you to see what is really in the viewfinder.

Good first step!

What kind of camera were you using?

I'll post some more when all my pictures are ready, I'm still experimenting with different cropping etc to get the most out of them.

Ok, here's the same picture with some touchups (stupid Jpeg artefacts...)

Here's another one from the same spot.

In hindsight I think I should have used a lower aperture like f4 (instead of f8) to blur out the background and to put more focus on the actual subject (the kid and the old man with mother and child). Now they're drowning in the whole picture imo.

The next one is my gf, which turned out exactly the way I wanted it to Wink

And in the last one I like the texture in the wall and the composition.

Flame away!

Go to http://brunomorez.blogspot.com here to see them in better quality

I have a photo contest for work and wouldn't mind your feedback selecting 3 photos for submission. There are the standard categories: People, Children, Nature, Architecture, Landscapes, Sunsets, Flowers and Wildlife. I have a few photos on my JPG page - If some of you have a few minutes to spare, I'd really appreciate your suggestions on which photos I should submit.

Thanks for your feedback,

Jason

Paul that flash class looked great. some really nice work from it, that is probably the one thing I might break down and take a class for. I love those exposures.

Some fairly recent stuff, and one I went back to 2007 to process after messing with it back then I finally decided what I wanted from it.

Normally I don't do HDR for scenics or landscapes but the light was aweful and I wanted to accentuate the stone work done by the CCC in the 1930s.

Pentax K20D, DA 21mm Limited, 5 exposures at 2EV.

Pentax K20D, Sigma 10-20 (after some time I've decided the shadows on the roof need a little dodging in the foreground)

Nikon D1H, Sigma 70-200 2.8, f/5.6 -0.3EV, fill flash at 1/2 power at 1/1250th. I love the D1h because of the unlimited sync speed of the flash. I used a vivitar 285HV at 1/2 power to get some life in the eyes. I was syncing all day to as much as 1/3200th!

And in keeping with my philosophy of shoot now and process whenever, from the RAW archives of 2007

K10D, Sigma 10-20mm.

Been busy with engagement shoots and our first wedding of the season, check out some of the images on the blog -

http://www.wtallenphotography.com/blog - lots of off camera lighting!

Also, as a side note, if you like the wordpress template, it is based on an open source one - PM/email me if you want more details. Flash header and images to 900px with drop down menus...

I had heard about that before, but never tried it. All of my film gear is back on the other side of the country anyway. I also lost my steel reels.

Thanks, I've been wanting to play around a little more with long exposure stuff so those were fun to shoot. Tried to get there just after it got dark hoping to catch a few more teams on the captain with headlamps on but only caught a few of them.

Here is another shot I got this past weekend while up in the Meadows of Tenaya.

Some film stuff I just got back:

Pentax 645N, Fuji Provia 100F, 55mm @ f16 (35mm eq = !~35mm) Large Version Here

Absolutely love the grain and contrast of Ilford Delta 3200 (which is a 1250ISO film) pushed to EI 3200! Of course rock climbing.com resizing algorithm sucks, but clicking on this one will bring you to the full 1080x1080 web image.

Pentax 645N, 55mm f/2.8 @ 5.6 (35mm equiv = 35mm), Ilford Delta 3200 @ EI 3200.

Yes, I set the camera ISO to 3200, and shot as normal, just like you would with any film you are pushing. Then I noted on the film exposed at EI 3200, process accordingly. Any decent lab (pro lab) will understand this and do what needs to be done. Ilford films are really tough to screw up in the camera or in processing so it's not all that difficult to get pleasing results back.

I wanted to stress that because Ilford 3200 is misleading, it is not a 3200 ISO film but a 1250 ISO film.

And yeah, I do love the grain structure and contrast. Although FP5 looks great pushed to 1600 as well, or you can also "pull" process these films for less grain and contrast. So shoot Delta 3200 at EI 400 and watch the grain disappear.

Some images I developed recently.

After fighting the urge to start developing my own black and white, I'm sort of addicted. Only issue is I hate spooling 120 onto plastic reels. Gonna get a stainless tank soon.

Pentax 645N, 200mm f/4 at f/5.6, Acros 100 @ EI 400, Kodak HC 110 developer (dilution B), 9.5 minutes @ 20C, agitation for 30 seconds to start, and then 5 inversions at the 1/2 way mark. Scanned using HP G4050, minimal digital adjustments. Love the lack of grain pushed 2 stops with Acros and the HC 110.

This one is Neopan 400, pushed 2 stops to 1600. A little more grain, but grain isn't always a bad thing (even though we've been trained in the digital age the "grain or noise" is a sign of a bad camera). Although as little as there is it is quite pleasing. Love the tones.

Pentax 645N, f/3.5 @ 1/60th, Fuji Neopan 400, pushed 2 stops to EI 1600, developed in HC110 dilution H (1:63) at 20C for 24min, agitated for first 1 minute, then again for 30 seconds at the 15 minute mark. Scanned using HP G4050 with Silverfast Ai. No photoshop adjustments.

Acros is a bit more contrasty than Neopan, and also tends to scan better (at least my initial impression).

The whole B&W thing is great because it's perfect for those who like to tinker but want a break from the computer and RAW files. All scanned with HP G4050 till I decide on a better scanner with a wet mount.

BTW, I spent ages trying to work out what the hell sort of animal that skeleton came from. Eventually worked out that it's a rabbit. What threw me is that the head is actually rotated 180 degrees both vertically and horizontally relative to the rest of the body (ie. upper teeth are at top left). The lower jaw is sitting underneath, facing in the other direction (ie. teeth under the skull, on the right).

Little guy really copped it!

Great pics everyone. Wes, your nature shots look great. I especially like the vibrant colors of the wide lake shot. Was that done in post processing or was it out of the camera like that?

I finally got my GF1 and shot a few pics and a ton of video at the Hound Ears Bouldering competition this weekend.

I know this Pic isn't up to the standards of some of the other shots in this thread. However, in my mind the $1k I dropped is justified with this shot alone(Ketchup stains and all). My old point and shoot would have been hopeless with this back lit picture.

Here are some other shots I got as well.

Just the usual post stuff, nothing crazy. Pretty sure I had a circ. polarizer on, since the reflections on the lake are kinda reduced along with the darker skies. Shoot in the middle of the day.

More, fun, but crappy video, http://vimeo.com/6862537 300f4 + 1.4 TC, and rode ntg-3. Still picked up a lot of background noise behind me, but it did better then I thought it would with the elk.

Damn fine work!

What kind of lens/settings did you use for that last picture of the first couple. The perspective on his leg is really cool, but it doesn't seem to be a wide angle lens. Really small aperture + flash?

Thanks much! Not sure which photo, but I usually leave the EXIF attached, so you can see the settings if you want, no problem. Plus, I use a lot of off camera lighting as well.

Haven't posted up in here for a while. Thought I'd bring the camera with me while out climbing yesterday. Been working on a couple photo projects lately so here are a few random photos for fun.

After a long hiatus, starting off the new year right.

Been lucky enough to maximize my weekends, and swing 3.5 days off every week...

that said, the stone just started rolling and inertia should get things going in earnest. Up till this weekend it was shaping up to be a fabulous winter for the first time in a few years. We got a late start but sustained cold, and decent (though not deep) snow cover was looking good. A little melt out this weekend (40s) but we are hanging on!

Looks like no one's posted in awhile... so some refresh.. Its a little different than the photos I've seen on this thread and the sizing is probably way off since this is my first time AND no post processing done. Still haven't bought a software. So its just the photo as is.

Please let me know what you think!

I've been trying and trying to improve my knowledge and skill. I've finally gotten to a point where I can semi-confidently use full manual. Here's my results from yesterday... Let me know your thoughts, good or bad.

I haven't done any editing to these.

I'm currently using a Kodak 1012z

There are some great shots in this thread. I just started to get out on the rocks again lately after a long hiatus. Hopefully I can post some climbing pics soon. Until then...
