hey i hail from north jersey.... im looking to get into sport climbing as well as trad trying to figure out where the best sport climbing is??????

The Library in Scranton/Wilkes Barre area for sport there is also some trad in that area..for trad it would have to be the Gunks

I'd give a strong second to the library/main wall/paradise area in mocanaqua. There is a lot of great rock around there. Birdsboro would be about the same distance, maybe further, but lower quality rock.

I agree with Joe,
Also, there is a granite sport area in the Tri State region PA/NJ border that is as good and almsot as large as Rumney--pretty similar routes too.
Joe, did Kotch ever take you there?

not sure about the best, but you can trad in allamuchy, the delaware water gap has both single and multipitch trad, and then there's the gunks, which is THE GUNKS good trad.
as for sport i've heard good things about birdsboro but never been there. I heard that the sport crag at the NJ/NY border is good but hard grades so if you are looking for more moderate might not be the best. do you have the rock climibing NJ guidebook?

I don't actually know the name and I'm not sure if there are access issues, I passed it on the ways to the gunks by the thruway at the border and someone pointed to a ridge, maybe someone wants to elaborate?

i don't know anything about the sport crag on the nj/pa border that roclimb mentioned but if it is, in fact as good and as large as rumney then i would love to find out where it is. the transit cliffs is another sport crag on the NJ/NY border but it's technically off access. granted that doesn't stop a whole lot of people but technically you could get arrested for trespassing if you climb there.

Is this a troll or is there really sport climbing in this area? Can you describe how to get there/where it is, if you can't remember the name? A few posts seem to mention NJ/NY border and some NJ/PA border (which are a bit different). I can't really see anything in the data base which suggests such an area....bit confused. Would be great to have somewhere to clip closer than Rumney for the (very rare) times we don't go to the Gunks.

there is a rock band to your east above Duttonville off of 84 just below 1200'
it sits JUST north of the Orange/Sussex (county), NJ/NY (state) boundary line
Dryden Kuser Natural Area (NJ) technically ends at the county/state line
looks like a decent hike in, lots of vacant, undeveloped land north from the rock
access would need to be checked
never climbed there so no idea if those nasty metal things are all over the face of it or not
but there is rock almost right on the border there, for what it's worth

Any more info on this crag? A few people have mentioned the NY/NJ border and the NJ/PA border, I am familiar with the crag on the NY/NJ border but not the PA, unless they are one in the same?

Yeah, it is near the NJ/NY/PA trisect. Some exploration should reveal where it is, along with the clues already given in this thread. Access is questionable, so sometimes places like this are better left for the adventurous type. Posting directions on the internet could jeopardize the access in the future with the inevitable influx of keyboard climbers. There are plenty of areas listed on this site to relieve the initial outdoor itch.
The Tri-state area is LOADED with rock. A large amount of it is secret/hidden/private/ect... One of the most exciting parts of outdoor climbing is the adventure and discovery of new rock. I am so grateful that the generations before me left some rock undocumented, for us to go out and hunt!

100% agree, when I first started climbing people said I was screwed and there was no good climbing in jersey/ tristate area. Since then I have explored vast amounts of woods in the area and have found some awesome spots. And I was very pleased to see that none of them were in the route databases and I hope it stays that way.

Really. Almost every state is bordered by two others; I bet there are well over 100 possible combination and definitions of "tri-state."
Up here it means Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont.

I grew up in north Jersey....Delaware Water Gap is awesome!!! My sister lives in Blairstown and is looking at getting back into climbing.....The Gap is right off Rt 80.... |
