It seems most of the replies here are coming from men. We don't get it.

A couple of years ago, I was at the gym with my 6-year old granddaughter. She said, "Look at that girl's chalk bag." I looked at it and didn't notice anything special. She then told me to look at mine. I was still clueless. She finally said that the girl's chalk bag was a pretty yellow with nice flowers on it and mine was "just black". Her older brother never noticed anything like that while climbing with me at the gym.

Grandpa.calm

You just described my two kids.

My daughter would be totally for getting that chalkbag, if she were to see one.

Isn't this the same Co. that brought us the $70 ROPE BAG?

(I've paid less than $70 for the friggin' rope!)

'Plastic' bottle opener seems pretty lame! I think I'll just use my 'metal' nut key to open the brew instead.

So, does anyone else get the feeling that this entire sport– pro sponsorships, expeditions, pro-deals, etc.– rides on the back of six-figure and up yuppies who think nothing of dropping $35 on a chalkbag, $70 on a rope, or $120 on a sweatshirt just for a weekend of guided toproping?

To an extent...yes. I worked in a gear-shop, and nothing pissed me off more than some guy coming in and dropping 500 bucks on an arcteryx shell just to wear around campus. But in the other hand, I can see why people justify the cost. I personally love arcteryx. I think they make an excellent product that wears like iron. After spending 8 hours in a hard rain mapping geology in the middle of no-where, I was pretty happy I had that proshell.

Well a continued downturn in retail will likely curb folks enthusiasm for high dollar name brand outdoor gear. Soon it will become cool again to have a plastic pancho and army surplus pants. The high price folks are going to have to tighten the belt to survive. Maybe they already have.

But maybe the economy will turn around before we lose the best gear mfgs. Face it - climbing gear is 100% luxury item.

For sure man. I still go back every once and a while and put in a shift at the store. Because of the economy, this season has been horribly slow. You go into a outdoor store, and pretty much everything is a luxury item.

If you consider a $70 rope to be splurging on rope, then I want to know where the fuck you're buying your ropes!
