So, spring is here - lets see some climbing photos! We have finally been able to take advantage of living at the red, and do some climbing. I even brought the photo gear a couple days. Most of these are using flash of some sort or another, just built a bit better hand held flash bracket, so I can use two or three speedlights now. Still dialing in the off camera stuff with on a rope, but it is pretty cool stuff to work with.

As I sit here tonight watching the snow slowly fall... I hate you. As for the pics, I like what you are doing with depth of field. Its always my favorite technique to say "hey you! look over here!"

Nice looking work Wes. How about a picture of you with your new bracket in action? Paul

Nice shots Wes. So far this year I haven't been able to shoot as much as I wanted but a couple of my favorites have been rotating on the frontpage here. My 7 year old laptop is near death so post-processing is extremely limited...just doing crop, contrast and saturation adjustments. I've got a couple more trips coming up so hopefully I can improve my techniques. The Splitter pic was accidently underexposed by probably 4 or 5 stops, b&w was the only way it could be "saved" This one was heavily cropped but I liked how it turned out.

I know I'm looking at a small image, but there's hardly any noise and the histogram is pretty heavy on the right. I'd be curious to see the original. Don't get me wrong though; I think the B&W works really well with this shot.

Thanks much for the kind words - love sports and nature, just wished they paid better! The bracket isn't anything special, a manfrotto umbrella adapter with a super clamp holding a cheap umbrella adapter sideways, which then has two flash zebra shoe adapters holding two 580 EX II's. I was using a bigger version of this, but it was too bulky. Will try to get out with the new setup next week sometime. Cool photos, dlinz! Hope some more people post up!

Thanks much - that was at F2 on a 135mm lens (which is fast becoming my favorite climbing lens). Used high speed synch on the flash to allow a pretty fast shutter.

My guess is that you don’t have that lens attached to a point and shoot camera? What camera do you use? Great shots by the way. The DOF is outstanding!

Nice shots, Wes. I think they may be too contrasty or something for my taste. I can't quite place it. They're good though. 135mm f/2 Is a sweet lens. I hope Pentax decides to make something like that. If I could add one thing to their line up, it would be that. I throw a few in from my month in Joshua Tree. Some Random boulder in Josh. I'm sure it has a name and rating... Spider Line - 5.11c

Not 100% climbing since I didn't get to do the goulotte I wanted to (the day after those were taken, terrible weather), but here are some from Chamonix, last Easter. The end of Cosmiques Ride, with the north face of Mont-Blanc du Tacul in the background: Before heading down the last portion of the Vallée Blanche: Arête du Midi, the start of the Vallée Blanche:

WOW... really nice shots you guys. I've been wanting a real camera for a long time, but I can't afford it. Anyways, I figured I'd throw some point and shoot pics up. From my last few years abroad. Malaysia New Zealand Thailand, mostly koh Phi Phi

Paul_Y wrote: rtwilli4, Get that "real camera" soon, you are more than ready it. Really good work here! Thanks Paul. I'm workin on it. I should spend more time in the photo part of the site though... maybe I'll find some used gear. I'm debating on buying the new Canon G10 versus just stashing that $400 as a start on saving for an SLR. I travel a lot so the best point and shoot out there makes sense for me. I'm also in the market for some trad. gear so I'm gonna have to make some decisions. And now that I look back.. that last DWS pic was taken with a D3 but the rest were with either my Canon SD 850 or friends point and shoots.

In reply to: I'm debating on buying the new Canon G10 versus just stashing that $400 as a start on saving for an SLR. I travel a lot so the best point and shoot out there makes sense for me. I'm also in the market for some trad. gear so I'm gonna have to make some decisions. Definitely save the extra dough and go for the DSLR, it will make a huge difference on your images, especially for action shooting. The G10 is certainly a great camera, but it remains a P&S with a small sensor. The entry level DSLR (Nikon D60, Canon 450D or whatever it's called in the US, Pentax K20D...) are so tiny now that traveling with them is really no hassle. If you're really trying to save money, try to look for a somewhat older generation. There are some good deals on Nikon D40 kits, and possibly on the D60 whenever their successor is announced. I expect it's the same for Canon.
