I don't get it, there's always all these people on this site talking crap about gym climbing. Me personal I love it you get a good climbing specific workout in a short time little hassle with gear a beer and maybe a jaffle, I'll be a happy man. So why talk thrash on gym climbing? All climbers I know (including guys who have done serious ice and trad and FA's and the whole shebang) enjoy the gym as well as climbing outdoors, they're a different beast of course but they're both fun. So do you guys just need to maintain your badass outdoor dude image? Or are you weak old traddy's who can't crank in the gym? Discuss, Cheers Ido

I just feel that I need to point out how lame it is to "sign" your posts with your sign on name. I somehow doubt your name is Ido.

well for me beyond people learning to climb in a gym then going outside and not knowing how to be safe......people think they are 5.12 climbers...then you take them outside and find they are 5.12 gym climbers. But, I agree it's a good workout on cold snowy winter days, or afterwork when you don't have time to get outside.

There is nothing wrong with gym climbing, but there is so much more to climbing than the isolated moves, which aren't as good indoors anyways.

I have taken people out from the gym who claim to climb 12+. They could not follow 9 outside. They had a very difficult time staying on routes (no tape… ,hahah) and they were shaking once they got above 50 feet high or so (mental fucking breakdowns). They burnt out quick, tried to power through all the moves, over gripped everything, had a hard resting on holds to remove gear, couldn’t smear worth of shit, and had very poor footwork in gen. I have also taken people inside to a gym who learned outside. They lead any route they wanted fearlessly. Their endurance was astronomical compared to the local jocks ,( jock : “my forearms are pumped”) hahaha lol… jump to the blue floor...

No one runs a marathon in a gym. I know someone who will remain nameless. This certain person claims to be a lead climber(ok I know a few) but only in the gym. When the person I am thinking of goes outside, its always a top rope, even if they have people that can lead it, just because someone has never done that route before. The gym blows dude, just give it up already. No one dies in a gym, but plenty of people do outside. Nothing is better inside, lets see the things that are enhanced by outside, tennis, baseball, football, skateboarding, soccer, sex, barbecues, paintball, drinking a beer, shooting small animals with a rifle a cleaning rod and blanks. Everything is better outside.

For example, lets say mad_dick_lollipop_avenger7 wants new shoes so he writes; Hey guys my shoez are worn lol, I need new ones, my big toenail turned yellow lolz. I just want to climb 5.13 in my first year, wut should I buy? Thanx, Maddick Lollipop Avenger VII Or Hey guys, I want new shoes. Any suggestions? Thank, Frank Both are stupid but only one makes me want to kill myself so I can haunt the SOB for eternity and look at his sister in the shower. I hope you see the difference.

Unfortunately I do not have a lot of experience leading trad and have not yet done so at frog, witches cauldron would be great. Oh and we do leave Brisbane at five to go there... But now it's raining like crazy and my trip to slider this weekend might be canceled and I'd end up in the gym instead. Just longing for my first Aussie winter to arrive they're supposed to be dry and a nice temperature. Cheers Ido

The gym is a tool. I never said to give it up, I goto the gym only because I can't find anyone around here who wants to go after work climbing. Bunch of losers with your "families" and "dates".

If you truly believe that climbing is only about completing a series of moves, then I have deep pity for you.

Well from both your replies I make out that your main problem is with signing your posts with a sign on name. I will readily admit that I_do and Ido are pretty close together so it might be a bit superfluous. However it is my real name and I think it gives the posts something of a personal touch and gets it away from the world of internet aliases. So do not look at my sister for this I want you guys to be happy together but I feel this is not a healthy way to start a relationship. Cheers I'll think about it and get back to you to tell you whether I agree or to STFU.

Yeah WC is a good beginner route and so too Parson's Pleasure. The next step would be Clockwork Orange Corner, Theory, Electric Lead and then Devils Wart (one of the best lower grades at Frog IMO). I guess Urban Climb is a decent gym, but other than that you're SOL. Despite the crowds I always preferred to climb at KP than in the gym.
