Getting busted for growing marijuana and going to jail, then being on house arrest with nothing else to do but surf the web? Thats #1 reason in my world right now.

See my reason is having to be at work supervising all the people who got caught growing marijuana, killed somebody, and other unspeakables. Having the badge hinders climbing sometimes.

Well, when you lump it together like that, it's just as logically correct to say: "all the people who got caught speeding, growing marijuana, killed somebody, and other unspeakables".

Don't think anyone here is saying killing people is punished disproportionately, but while I'm not an expert on the matter, I don't think the majority of marijuana growers spend a regular portion of their work day blowing people away with suppressed shotguns.

Sometimes a prison guard is just a prison guard.

i would say a lack of good near-by spots is def a big factor in stopping climbing...i used to live in PA, where there are spots everywhere and recently moved to Hoboken, NJ where there is virtually nothing...ive been making the best of it by bouldering in central park in NYC and joining a gym..but i could see how it would stop an unmotivated climber from continuing to pursue...but hey where there's awill there's a way...im trying to head to the Gunks soon...anyone have any recommendations on the best bouldering spots and camping spots??

Depends on what you mean by 'climbers.'

I'd say the #1 cause for drop out is the realization that the person just doesn't like it.

"Climbing would be great if it weren't for all that climbing."

I think, for any given crop of wouldbe noob climbers? The 10-year drop out rate is WAY above 90%. Now some of that 90% will insist for years afterward, that they are climbers.

But they climb little if nothing at all. Because BEING a climber is more important than 'all that climbing.'

Its easy to blame husband, boyfriend, physical handicap.... believe me.

But those are just excuses and excuses are like assholes and erveryone has one and they all stink.

If you want to climb? YOU WILL CLIMB.

Blame it on the significant other. But at the end of the day climbers don't stop climbing. That is a simple fact.

I think this is pretty accurate. 9 years into my climbing life, I was severely injured and knocked out from any chances of climbing in near future. I didn't tell people I was a climber, or even really want to talk about the stuff I could no longer do at the time. After many years of rehabilitating my body, I was able to finally get back to climbing and I now find every excuse I can to be out climbing.

If you WANT to climb.....you WILL climb.

If you really love climbing, you aren't going to be with someone who doesn't love the outdoors also or who stops you from doing what you love. Hell, lets make that a general statement: You should not be with someone who doesn't let you do what you love doing. That said, I think weather is the greatest enemy of the climber...at least here in the midwest.

Dude, you committed a crime, not a "crime".

Thats debatable. A crime, in my opinion, is something that is illegal and immoral all over the world. You couldn't say, "hey i'm going to goto Amsterdam to murder some people. I hear its legal there." Growing a plant is hardly a crime. and if you think otherwise i really dont wanna hear what you have to say cause it will just piss me off.

Just five plants dude and if you get caught selling any you're in big shit dude. So lets hear it how many plants.

What are you twelve? You got caught, live up to it. Rules are there for a reason and I think they make for a better society overall. sometimes they are stupid, but until you fess up some more details we can't know whether you've been "wronged" or not, cause that's how you're acting.

So if you just had a few plants that's ok in my book. Making money off it? Not ok. Acting like prison guards see all inmates as "evil"? Grow up dude.
