Hi there, I'm new to climbing, actually never gone before and was looking at pictures of the gym I'm going to be going to with a friend over the weekend and almost everyone in the pictures are wearing pants. At first I assumed I'd wear shorts since it was a pretty physical activity and I'd want to stay cool, but I see everyone in the pictures wearing rolled up pants...am I right in assuming pants are worn for protection against rubbing and whatnot? Thanks

Meh, I prefer shorts unless it's cold, wide crack, or if I'm topping out on rough boulders. You're legs don't tend to rub too much when you're climbing.

This may not seem obvious to the uninitiated but if you don't remember a beanie you will probably not fit in very well.

Yes, pants will protect your legs, especially knees, from scratches (not from bruises, unfortunately...). Also, don't assume that the gym will be warm, just because it is indoors. Our gym isn't, though we wish it were. But... it is perfectly fine to wear shorts. If you choose shorts, make sure you put on those shiny-stretchy-fabric soccer shorts. (Champion brand?) They are a trademark of every climbing gumby. Oh, and under-armor T-shirt, of course.

Thanks Lena, I actually don't own a pair of shorts as of now which was part of my concern, I did though just cut an old pair of jeans into shorts and i think they'll work just fine. They are a little short though and the pockets hang out of the legs but oh well...I'll just make sure not to go commando. I also am going to bring some chaps just for good measure.

I wear loose painters pants. My climbing partner wears shorts. Our gym (like most gyms?) has rough walls and the pants prevent scrapes but hinder movement, particularly on high steps. If you are working slabs or near vertical near your limit (wear you are likely to slip and hit the wall) both consequences of pants apply. For overhanging routes you don't usually scrape the wall. I may have to go to shorts since the main route setter at the gym has picked a tendency toward high steps. I see a lot of spandex which would resolve both issues but I'm not going there.

when I'm in the gym I wear the same clothing I wear outside. In the summer I climb in a jock strap and tube socks and in the winter I wear a snow mobile suit with helmet. Train for your conditions.

i wear trousers because a) i have a tendency to ram my knee into all things abrasive, and b) the first time i went climbing i got rope burn on the delicate skin in behind my knee. ymmv, but i prefer being a little warm to being a little sore... steve

It's all personal preference. Lots of people wear pants because it's more uncomfortable to slam your exposed shins or knees into the rock than it is to be a bit hot. I will wear shorts on occasion, but for me, my go to pants are a beat up old pair of thrift store chinos. My girlfriend was putting away my laundry one day and actually put them with my nice slacks because the tag said "Banana Republic." I can say for absolute certain, though, that climbing in scrub pants is the worst of both worlds.

touche, I had a pair of pants over them because I usually wear shorts under my pants in case of swimming or whatever and that day when we went climbing it was at noon and like 102f and while on the route that I'm belaying that guy on I almost passed out because of the heat so I went to shorts while I was cooling down.

I think jeans (a few sizes too big) work well, although not nearly as "cool" as "special climbing pants".

I generally wear shorts, usually something heavier than normal athletic shorts. However, I have recently been climbing in athletic shorts since the climbing club at my school happens to climb right after cross country practice and I don't bother/ have time to change. I also climbed in jeans for the first time this weekend. I did not notice any bad restrictiveness, so I vote jeans if its cold, shorts if its not :P On a side note, last week I wore compression shorts to XC and then rock climbing, I know its kinda off topic but has anyone else tried this?

Yeah I would say they're like bike shorts but shorter and you wear them under athletic shorts or whatever. They aren't unbearably tight jus tight enough to keep you in one place and from hanging out the bottom of your shorts.

Simple anwser is... wear what is comfotable. Wear somthing for the first climb, if it works great. If not than adjust the pants to getthe job done. I wear shorts in the gym. I blessed with plenty of sweat glands so I perfer to stay cool and not to greese up the route more than I have to. If you feel your legs are getting bashed up wear long pants. OUt side, I wear rolled up carhartts.

I wear pants & shorts, though every brand is different. I Start by putting them on & if I can lift my foot up onto a counter with out having much restriction from the clothing then go with that. after a while I have found which shorts & pants work best for me. Being Fall now I wear jeans rolled up to just below the knee.

I usually go for pants, but that's just because it's easier. I work at a climbing wall, so I usually just wear jeans and roll them up since I usually climb before work anyway. I've been hoping to come across some yoga pants. I'm terrified that one day my jeans are simply going to split down the middle while I'm climbing.

Outside: Pants... just so I don't sunburn, and for preventing abrasions. Usually loose khaki type pants, cargo pockets are a plus for long routes were you need to keep a topo with you Gym Spring/Fall/Winter = Pants (unless it's unusually warm)... usually the same as my outside pants. Gym Summer = Long but not too long nylon hiking shorts or khaki shorts My favorite favorite pair of climbing pants I got at the salvation army. Loose fitting khaki type pants with cargo pockets. They even looked like 'specialty climbing' pants. The tag was $1.50, but it was a red tag... and red tags were half off. I used them for about a year.
