It's about a mile from pooper to pooper. btw - slightly off topic, but I discovered Hurrincane Mtn Rd last night on the drive back (I was experimenting with drive-home routes) and that is a kick-ass road! The drive down, at night, with no one else on the road, was unbelievable! This may be where I say I was lucky to have not hit a deer, but still, wow, what a thrilling ride down the back side of that mountain! Ok I just looked up the road on google maps. From the cliff top to the intersection of Chapel rd and Cathedral Ledge rd. (Further than the most likely parking spot) is 1.4 miles. That's on a paved road, going downhill. I think 15 minutes might be a tad too fast, but 20 is certainly reasonable.

Well, I'll be the first one to say that walking downhill sucks in general, and that walking on pavement pretty much always sucks. But you were complaining about the time involved and I can't see any reasoning behind that. If anything the rap off is slower than the walk. Although I have been met with a car and a case of beer at the top, which is not a bad thing at all. Anyways, you should go out to RMNP and get on the diamond. I think you will appreciate the convenience that New England offers just a bit more.

If you want to be the douchebag dropping ropes down on people below you be my guest but it is a dick move. If you drop off the Saigons then you're hardly anywhere near the climbers coming up, particularly on the first pitch. I'd never drop a rope on someone on the crux of P2. I'm pretty sure the same goes for dropping on the route to the climber's left of thin air. I already said in an earlier post that dropping on Thin Air itself is a bad idea.
In reply to: you trying out climb me is laughable. But i avoid the douchenozzle scene in cornflake like the plague You avoid that scene because you're mostly clipping single-pitch bolt lines. After having climbed a fair bit in the 'Gunks, I'd say I'm pretty savvy with regards to knowing when to drop ropes on a climb. I don't need your advice column to know those rules thanks. I have no idea where the "outclimb" you comment came from. I wasn't saying that I'd outclimb you, I was saying I'd rather be climbing than walking. To each his own though.

Although I have been met with a car and a case of beer at the top, which is not a bad thing at all. The car at the top was nice this time, and I've hitched down before, too, but if one has two ropes then it's a single rap to the ground from the ledge, depending on where you go from. To me, that's easier and quicker and it allows for the added benefit of bringing your pack to the base for added munchie breaks during the day.
In reply to: Anyways, you should go out to RMNP and get on the diamond. I think you will appreciate the convenience that New England offers just a bit more. Yeah, Kor's Flake at Lumpy was a LOOOOOOONG day. I'm well aware of those approaches and descents. While I think I'm ready to take on the hiking and maybe the climbing (as a second) on the Diamond, I'm definitely not ready for the round-trip yet. But then again, don't forget you have Eldo, and we all know the approaches and descent there are BRUTAL!!!

Well that's just it; an approach and descent like the one on Cannon is not only not avoidable but obviously expected. There's just no way around that if you're going to Cannon, but there are ways around it on Cathedral. I'm not advocating rapping all the time, nor avoiding the walk-off, per se, just saying that the walk is longer than people suggest it is and that there are alternatives that don't require rapping off Thin Air itself.

One can also walk pass the Tourist Overlook and take a trail down to the Barber Wall and get couple of pitches in before walking off the top. But you need to know where to go and it's kinda hairy...

You have like a 5 minute approach at the bottom.. sack the fuck up you lazy bastard. 5 minutes? Are you sprinting down or something? Approach -> the crag. And +1 for walking off. But if you have to complain about an extremely short paved! walk off then you probably shouldn't be climbing at all. Anyone on the west coast would be laughing there asses off if they knew the details of what you guys are talking about. that road is a lot less extremely short than you might think it is...and it's more than 15min from the top to the car. I think 15 minutes might be a tad too fast, but 20 is certainly reasonable. see above response to Jake. ^^ I measured it yesterday in my car... ~1.1 miles from pooper to pooper. I'd say that's closer to 25-30min. I have bad knees, though, so that pounding is rough on me. ~2 miles an hour, downhill? are you crawling? He was watching to pick up WonderWoman.

Slow, but not completely out of range.

It seems like the exaggerated shoulder shrugging required to produce sufficient volume would be dangerous while operating a motor vehicle.

Saturday Epoch's 4 year old hiked 1 mile on mostly flat uneven trail in less than an hour with stops to save many catapillars by moving them off the trail. so what you're saying is your fitness level is less than that of a 4 year old.
