Gee, I'll bet that Black Diamond and Petzl North America (and the 50K other climbers here) will be so jazzed that they'll close up shop in SLC and Ogden and move to Boston immediately.

No, Boston is not a good climbing city for anyone that doesn't have a warped view of reality. There are two other huge negatives about Boston that haven't been mentioned - it's in Massachusetts, and Bostonians live there.

Edit to fix borked English of original.

Could be worse. We could be overrun with Mormons.

Seriously, I miss the good old day of the US... in other words, the 70's. Shit done changed! Unfortunately, I don't think it'll ever be the same. I do love my country, but there's no way I'm coming back now that I've tasted Thailand. I couldn't be more happy. I only wish I'd come here sooner.

Ahhh, Connecticut. That explains it. You are basically a New Yorker. But, I have been to SLC, and I would take the mormons over most Bostonians, too. But ONLY because of the climbing there. Wink

Central CT (Wallyworld), not that extension of NYC called Fairfield County.

No offense Phang..but Thauland's got to have the shittiest climbing weather I coudl ever imagine. Stiflign hot and oppressve humidity. Plus the complete lack of seasonal temperature change that fact that the only place you find ice is in a freezer makes Thailand the worst climbign destination i could ever think of. If I had to move some place war, it needs to be dry, but my perfect climbing loction needs to be farily mild in terms of high heat,and it has to have frigidly cold winters with a lot of snow.

Say what y'all want about Mormons, but nobody in my Utah hometown growing up ever took their car keys out of the ignitions, let alone locked anything.

Could you do that in the climbing Mecca of Boston?

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Denver/Front Range yet.

The last two years I've climbed outside every month of the year. Obviously not every weekend of Dec/Jan/Feb/March is perfect climbing weather, but if your work schedule is somewhat flexible you can get out on the nice days.

Even in the hottest months of the summer you can find a north facing wall to stay comfortable... or hit the alpine routes.

Within 1-2hrs of Denver are these locations each with their own hefty guide book.
* Boulder Canyon
* Eldorado Canyon
* Clear Creek Canyon
* RMNP and Lumpy Ridge
* Rifle
* Shelf Road
* The Flatirons

And then there are dozens of other smaller areas or singular crags with 10-70 routes also with in hour or two. Truly a life-time of climbing on your doorstep.

If you choose to live closer to Boulder, then some of those locations are close enough that you can leave work and be on the rock in half an hour.

Plus, if you take up skiing and/or ice-climbing then you can still be super active during the winter months... again within an hour or two drive.

85 to 95 degrees all year! Yes it rains at times. The places I climb are overhanging enough to be dry through most of it.

Honestly, it's a hell of a lot hotter in much of the US in the summer.

The politics in Bangkok doesn't affect where I live AT ALL. The problem last year was a minor incident which the international media had a field day with... and misrepresented in a major way. It's not like the politics in the US or many other countries is any better.

I prefer to have a steady temperature and I don't like snow. I don't like cold either. Once you've lived here for a while, you get very used to the mild temperatures.

The hottest time of the year in Southern Thailand is April and May. It's less stuffy here than it is in Virginia in the summer... a lot less stuff than much of the Midwest in the summer too.

Phang Nga Town would be my first choice. It's close enough to Phuket and Krabi for easy visits for shopping and whatever, yet far enough away to not be impacted by tourism. There are climbable mountains all around and a small park with a lot of bolted routes right on the edge of town.

I've been looking for land there, but haven't found anything yet. I did find 3 /12 acres of land further south for only US$9,000. (I just made $9,000 over the Christmas period Smile) I'm going to check that out shortly and likely get it. There are some cliffs on the land too! I can build a nice house for around $10,000 and vwalla! I'm set... land enough to farm, rock to climb and a nice house.

true that. I never lock my doors and visiting friends think thats crazy. this is definitely a great place to rise a family. and who cares how many mormons there are. they mind there own business. they are part of the reason the crime rate is so low here. thats something that the entire east coast can't say. life is much more laid back here in utah than any over crowded east coast city. but i sure do miss real cheese steaks and good pizza.

I wouldn't take anything GumbyBurns says seriously. If you read his plaintive emoting on his blog, you'll find he's far too conflicted to offer any tangible advice on climbing.

Not the easiest place to find work. I own my own company and it's very successful. I'll be able to retire sometime soon. It's definitely one of the easiest places to retire. To get a retirement visa, you simply put 800,000 Baht (US$26,000) in a Thai bank three month before applying for the one-year visa. You can take it out as soon as you get your visa. When it's time to get another visa, you simply put that same amount of money in again.

Hehe.

I actually did go to a damn good gourmet pizza place in SLC last week called Vinto. Along with the new Epic Brewing Co., it was a great surprise to come home to in UT.

Harrison Arkansas. Its a small town town (population 12,000) and has low taxes plenty of jobs and low cost of living. Housing is very cheap compared to the rest of the country. Harrison is only 45 minutes from:

*Horse shoe canyon
*Sams Throne
*Cave Creek
*stack rock
*Valley of the Blind
*Deliverance
*cowell

1 1/2 hours from:

*Lincoln Lake
*Haw Creek

2 hours from:

*Shepard Springs
*fern
*Mt Magazine
*Dardanelle rock
*Jamestown Crag

Horseshoe Canyon is one of the best crags in arkansas. I have heard from other climbers that its close to being the best in the country. If you've never been you should go. every year more and more people hear about the climbing in arkasas and the sport is taking off hear!

That right there (the bolded part) is how we know you are CRAZY.

No way in HELL that's good climbing weather, ESPECIALLY given that its HUMID.

How do I know? I'm from DC. That's right, a fucking SWAMP. And from mid-May to mid-September its 85-95 degrees and humid, and guess what?

I. Hate. Climbing. In. This. Weather.

65, dry, partly sunny, and a cool breeze. Perfect climbing and mtn biking weather. That said, I'd get bored stiff if i was in a location where there was 1 season.

That's you. I, and many others, prefer perfect, dependable weather all year. I don't want temperature swings. I like every day to be like a summer day.

I lived three hours south of DC and I know exactly what you have there. The humidity is just like here and the heat index is about the same, if not worse. Here's your relative humidity month-by-month http://www.cityrating.com/....asp?City=Washington and here's mine http://www.holiday-weather.com/phuket/averages/ As you can see, you're full of it. Our weather is almost the same in the summer.

Here's the weather here today http://www.phuketgazette.net/weather/index.asp I'm going climbing tomorrow... and if I feel like climbing any day of the year, I can.

Today is perfect and tomorrow will be too. The sun is up every day just after 6 AM and it's down every day just after 6 PM. I start work in the light and end work in the light. The only ice here is in my drink. I win! Enjoy the cold and the dark.
