Boy, don't ya just love the new words of warning before you post??? "Unprovoked abuse of other members will result in your post or thread being deleted. Offtopic threads and replies may be deleted or moved to Community at any time. Please do not post to the forums if you cannot follow these rules." Les said: Quote:we may have to settle with mid 30's Maybe, but lets see, we may get a warm-up. The other thing, we could always go out and do 2 climbs at like 1pm. At least we'd be able to say we climbed... Jeff said: Quote:are we doing VE on Friday for sure? Well, my kids seem to have other plans that night so right now I'm thinking that I'll go up there for a couple hours before I pick them up. Say like 2-5 or something. I realize that probably deosn't work for you but well, sorry dude; it's what I got... I'll be at VE Monday afternoon (1600h) for sure... duskerhu

This is the time for you guys to break out your surfboards and hit up Stoney Point of Lake Superior and catch some lefts!! I have some good friends that surf the big lakes. Amazing!! Truly amazing. Oh, what does this have to do with climbing? Nothing at all just wanted to spit some of my mind out that is all. ENJOY!!

Damn, I was told the water in the lake was too cold to swim in even in the summer, I'm talking hypothermia cold, oh well climbers find places to climb in the flatest land so I suppose surferes arent any different For those of you who wanted to get out and snow board with me, I havent been able to find that deal for $25, it may have just been for the holidays, best thing we can do is watch their web site and hope for another special. See ya'll at VE Mon night (No kids this time to bug me for my phone or car keys while I'm in the middle of a lead) Les

Hey pamola, welcome to the MN thread! Yes you are correct. There are some who try to surf the Big Stuff in Lake Superior. Usually in November and early December though. That's when the winds and waves are at their highest. C'mon Les, you've GOT your own wet suit; you should have imagined!!! Superior hangs between about 39 to 43 degrees all year around. Its the reason the lake doesn't freeze over in the winter (just ices up on the edges) and it's generally too cold in the summer even. A bigger activity than surfing though is wind-surfing and PWC (or jet ski like mobiles). Back to the subject at hand... Climbing in Minnesota... VE Monday night. I'll be there about 4pm. duskerhu

Wet suit???? wet suits are very limited, I think maybe were talking at least dry suit and I'm thinking you'd have to have some serious long johns under it. I dont know if any of you who used to be in the top 5 users on this page have noticed or not, but some of you slipped off the chart, I'm tring to find out why but I havent gotten an answer yet, I cant remember exactly what my point count was but now it seems short and i suspect that the restructuring in the points system made us lose points that we had acumulated. For example (these are completely made up # I dont know what anything is worth) if posting to a thread was worth 20 points and now its only worth 5 then maybe we lost the 15 points for each of those posts we'd made in the past. I'm just guessing, hopfully I'll have an answer soon. Les

Have any of you looked at weather.com this weekend??? They are predicting 45 degrees and dry at Barns Bluff on Wednesday!! Too bad I have to work (I have some huge projects that I can't get away from). While 45 degrees is usually too cold for me, the idea of climbing at Red Wing in January is very very appealing. I'll probably see you guys at VE on Monday. I pinched something in my wrist while working out yesterday, so I am 60/40 right now. I have to the most injury-prone person I know!! Anyways, it feels much better this morning. But I'll have to wait and see how it feels after a full day of sitting at a computer tomorrow. Craig

Wow, it was amazing today. Wish I had been able to come out to Barns today, I tried to get my friend to take me climbing during study hall, but it didn't work, and no one wanted to go after practice today either. Unfortunately I think the weather is supposed to get pretty cold within the next few days, so I might not get to climb outside for a long time.

WOOO HHhhoooo! Me and Les had fun at VE tonight... We finished our v0+ bouldering problem and started a new v1 before we were toast. Les took an inaugural run on the red lead route. And we both climbed the new comp red route; although Les got out of sequence on his first try and popped off. Dude, you should've HAD that! Tim was there with us and climbed a few things. He's really making some progress but dude, you gotta bite the bullet and go for the "Total Puddleness Effect". Its the only way to get stronger! Anyway, we had fun. Jeff didn't show and, I guess I was kinda looking for him but, maybe next time. And we are still in search of Louis. If anyone sees him at VE or REI or anywhere else for that matter, ask him to get ahold of me so we know he's good to go... Dann [ This Message was edited by: duskerhu on 2003-01-13 21:50 ]

Louis has been found. I stopped at REI when I bailed early... told you guys I had a reason. Erik said that Louis was in there wednesday or friday of last week. I told him that next time they see louis to have him give us a call... probably you Dann. But he is alive and well form what it seems. And one of these Dann I'll make another full night of climbing.. just 17 yr old girls at my house with no supervision is a very very bad thing. Next time I'm going on vacation and leaving my parents home with my sister.. See you guys monday at VE.. oh by the way class was wonderful.. we watched a movie aobut free climbing the nose of El Cap.. pretty wicked stuff. done in 1 day and done by a girl. Tim

Well, glad "Eric" said Louis has been in REI in the last week. Hopefully he's OK then. Although, I don't recall who Eric is... Tim said:Quote:And one of these Dann I'll make another full night of climbing.. Tim, if you never climb again, it doesn't really affect me (not trying to sound harsh at all dude, just giving you a bit-o-perspective). You're a good guy and we enjoy your company but you climb as long and as often as you wish. I'm just trying to "urge" you on... There are a number of things a person can do to become a better climber, almost without trying. 1.Cut out sugars and consume more protein. 2.Become more active in general. 3.And when you go to the gym and pay $11, get your money's worth. Even if you're not climbing the entire time, climb until you are litterally a "puddle" as Les would say. I failed to find the site with those cheap Canadian holds, I looked on ebay and there werent all that many holds this time, I'll keep after it. As for Tim, you listen to Dann, he'll have you climbing 11's in no time, ok maybe not but when you see Louis next time, ask him if we used to push him a bit, now he does a good share of pushing himself and he climbs better than me most of the time. Remember, no pain, no gain Les

Hello all, I just returned from Holiday in England. (there i go talking like some damm brit) I visited a couple of gyms in London, the best being Castle Arms, Most lines are 50' and the longest girdle type traverses about 120'. The gyms were filled with scruffy drity sickly strong brits. Can they pull!!! Loud metal music and beer. No punk music tho...it starts fights. Climbers in london, and britian in general are still the poor bastard stepchilderen to real mountianers. So this meant no Yuppies or Gym rats, just scruffy climbers waiting for the rocks to dry enough for them to make a trip outside. Grats rockhugger on your wall, let me know when i can come climb it, and maybe it will inspire me to work on my own project, that is nothing but a 50 hold pack sitting in my spare garage. josh

Welcome back Josh, thats sounds cool, I'd like to see that someday. On a diferent note, I got my Mugen's today, they are on my feet right now, the right one is too tight to walk in right now (it was too tight to keep on my foot for more than a min the 1st time) but the left is perfect, its hard for me to convince myself that they are the right size when I cant walk in them but it was the same way with the X-rays, my feet are forming to them nicely as I sit here, I've had the right one on for at least 15 min now. Anyway, I cant wait till monday to try them out, I'll have to bring sandals like Dann , now I can show you all what the top of the shoe should look like when they fit right (tight) Wish me luck at the boat show Fri & Sat and I'll see ya'll Monday. First of all Tim, hope I wasn't too harsh on ya but the old axiom that Les mentioned, "No Pain, No Gain" really holds true for most things. I'll PM you a bit later some more info on a few things in this line of thought... JOSH!!! Thought we'd lost ya... I tryed PM'n ya a couple times when we were going down to Red Wing but figured it might be too cold for you... England huh? I think that Castle Arms gym is the one our old friend Arthur/pumpkin_man used to go to when he lived there. Is it in an old Castle by any chance??? I think the pump gave me a link to their web site once to see what it looked like and it looked really cool. Glad you had fun... Patrick, as for your road trip to the Duluth VE, I'd love to go but want to bring my kids up there and the weekend you are going is my weekend without the kids, so, I'll have to pass this time and go later... (unless you maybe want to change your weekend) Les I'm SO happy to hear you got your Mad Rocks! I was starting to feel bad that I've had mine for 2 or 3 weeks now and you didn't... Man, I hope your feet can do some major molding into those things. (for those who don't know, Les' Mugens are the same size as mine {10.5} and I was complaining about them; his street shoes are at least a size larger than mine) Anyway, get used to them and we'll give them a good workout Monday (assuming my arm is feeling better, Jeff) Oh and, I was watching the "tube" this afternoon and saw a commercial for the BOAT SHOW! Thought about you and Deb walking around there, looking for your next "Fun Machine"... Please tell me you're not going to wear the Mugens over there to break them in... AND... They're sending your New 5.10's back??? Already? Are they sending an actual pair of X-rays? New version they're comming out with? And YELLOW? I don't know, you won't want to confuse your other Yellow (comfort) with the New Yellow (confidence)... Well, glad you're finally getting them back! Huh... I thought I was catching up to you in the shoe department with my 2 new pairs of Mad Rocks... Guess not... Catch yall later... Dann

Well after all the macho (real men wear their shoes tight) talk, I've decided to send my shoes back and get an 11, the left shoe fit how I wanted it to nice and tight but the right shoe was insanely tight, and after wearing the shoe for a combined time of maybe 2 hours I dont think it was going to get any better, so I'll have to wait a few more weeks. Its alright Dann I'll get over my case of shoe envy. Les

Well Dann you weren't too harsh, and I was asking for it. And your 17 yr old might not burn the house down but mine would.. or she'd sneak the boys in, which is fine with me cuz my flower beds haven't been growning very well (hehehehe)in need of good fertilizer. Les I'm hsppy thst you got your long awaited shoes. That's too bad you have to send them back. Well guys it looks like I'll see you monday at VE, and I'll try and not puss out early. Cuz getting better would be a totally cool thing, and no one can make me get better but myself, and some help from you old guys who know what you're talking about.. see you guys later.. Tim p.s. Dann I'd love to hear what you have to say on the subject.

Hey Josh, get those damn things fixed or I'll be forced to squeeze you into Les' tiny little pair... And if you're going to Jeff's, bring LOTS of jugs! Unless you like crimper hell. Oh, and wear some long-johns 'cus its sposed to be cold this weekend... AAHHHHhhhhhh haha ...and don't forget the kerosine for the torpedo heater! Jeff, he said CONCRETE... he apparently doesn't climb on silicone (why, I'm not sure; maybe he likes saggy ones jk Josh... ) Tim, I'm getting there; I ran out of time last night cus we were busy... Les, good luck up in MinniApple at the BoatShow... See yall Monday Dann

DUDE! yer gonna be Giddy all the way 'til April/ice-out, ain't ya??? NICE! Hey, I thought you were an anti-I/O man??? Well, that'll make a nice wake to get yer butt outta the water on that knee board, or, wakeboard, or, whatever it is yer ridin' at the moment... Did you get the "Standard Power" or the "Max HP"??? I guess you'll need some big ole' pourable gas cans now with that "23 Gallon Built-in Fuel Tank" Wholly fuel storage Batman! At least you won't have to stop and get gas every time you wanna use it eh... I suppose you'll have to get a covered lift for it now, it'll be so pretty and clean... WOW! Nice boat Les, but I just gotta say, my favorite feature has got to be the "10 Beverage Holders"! Thats more than one beverage per person (assuming you only have the capacity in the boat)... Anyway, back to climbing... I'll be at VE 'bout 4pm Monday afternoon... Dann

Kurt and Jeff and I will be doing a winter hiking trip next weekend to the north shore. A hike from Silver Bay to Tettegouche is in order followed by some climbing at VE in Duluth on Sunday. If anybody wants to meet us at VE you are welcome to help us try it out. I have never been to VE Duluth before, but Jeff has. Jeff wants to do some ice climbing on the Baptism River, but I think I will be all colded out after a night in sub zero temperatures. Sorry Jeff (rockhugger), but I have to wuss out on you. You and Kurt can go and do the ice thing without me if you want. Or maybe somebody else here is interested and could meet us at Tettegouche Sunday morning with their axes and crampons ready to go. Patrick, you're getting HOOKERS in the mail??? Isn't that, like, "interstate transportation of illegal sexual services" or something??? I don't know... How does the Post Master feel about that? Well, I hope you LIKE your Hookers... as long as its cool with your wife. Anyway, I missed VE tonight... I know... I have an excuse though... I had to work late this morning and didn't get home and to bed until 11am. So, I had a bit of a tough time getting OUT of bed this evening... I think I'll try Friday afternoon... And, I noticed why73 said VE Duluth is closed Sundays for the winter season... If that isn't the stupidest thing I've ever heared... If they wanna trim hours, they should do it in the summer when its nice out and everyone wants to climb outside! Oh well, catch yall later... Dann

Okay guys, since Jeff is still gone and I had to do his for him, here is how you have a marquee. First go into edit profile, then in the city spot type text You don't want any spaces in between, I had to add them so it didn't put the marquee in the post. Thanks Shelly... Even if we don't use it, at least we know what it is now... sheeesh, I really need to get a book or something... It's just that, all my reading time is usually spent on climbing/mountanineering books or my favorite novel. Don't have much patience for technical computer crap... HEY Everyone... Most of you got post cards but if you didn't and you're interested, Vertical Endevors is having their "Fabulous Yearly Membership Sale!" (a killer deal if I ever saw one!). The Duluth VE's sale is Sat. Feb. 22nd, 7:30-8:30pm. The St. Paul VE's sale is Sun. Feb. 23rd, 6:30-7:30pm. Both sales are 1 hour ONLY! Ya snooze, ya lose! And, your membership is good at all three VE's (St. Paul, Duluth, Chicago). You MUST be there in person with app and check in hand to get the deal. $209 + tax for an adult and $50 for your kid if applicable... Alright, well, January is almost over. Hopefully taking the really cold stuff with it. February is on the way and if I'm lucky, will have at least 1 day I can climb outside... In the nearer future, I'll be at VE Monday about 4pm... See yall there (well, Les I'm sure anyway). duskerhu

Ummmmm, I'm probably not going to be there right at 4pm... Our daycare provider went on a cruise and isn't going to be back until tonight so, I had to pick up Alyssa after work this morning. I'm dropping her at her moms work about noon and then going home to take a nap. Consequently, I'm not sure that I'll be able to get up at 3 to be at VE by 4. So, I'll be there, just not possitive what time... See ya there... Dann

Hey guys - sorry I didn't make it tonight. I had all of my gear with me, and was going to head there straight from work. But (yeah, the classic 'but') we had a little fire at work this afternoon, and I was the only programmer around, so guess who got to stay late and fix everything. Fun fun fun. Oh well... That's what they pay me for. I'm planning on going to VE on Wednesday night, but am planning on taking the clinic that they are putting on - Breaking the 5.10 Barrier. But if anyone is around before or after that, I'll be up for a few climbs or some add-on. Otherwise, there is always next Monday! I hope you guys had fun!!! OH yeah - Dann, it might hit 40 on Friday and Saturday. This could be your shot at getting some February (outdoors) climbing in! Climb on! Craig

I'll be at VE Wednesday. I was hoping to try out my new shoes, but the things are at least a full size too small! There is no way that these are size 9.5! Jeff and I did make it to Duluth on Saturday instead of Sunday. I didn't get to hike as far as I wanted, but we camped outside one of the two nights and ended up doing some real outdoor climbing at Carlton Peak. We had to climb really easy stuff in gloves and snow boots, but it was better than nothing. It was cool when we stopped at the Temperance river and walked all the way up to the falls on thick ice. I never would have thought that that river actually would freeze solid. It was so quiet too. When I saw that river in the Summer it was roaring. All we could hear was a gurgling sound through the ice. Maybe some day I will get the guts to try ice climbing.

Come on Patrick, BUCK-UP and stuff your feet in those things... Yeah, the Mad Rocks run pretty small... You should've tried some Anasazis on first and then gone up a 1/2 size... Or, you could've asked how they were sizing before you ordered them... See ya tonight... Dann

WOW! January's over... In a couple hours anyway. That went fast... I can't believe no one has posted up here in the last couple days. Well, say Good Bye! to January and Hello! to February. Lots of us have trips this month; hope every one has fun (Ed, Jay, Craig, Patrick, Jeff, and Curt)! I have to wait till its nice out for my trip... But, OH, the sweet anticipation! Anyhow, let's all hope February holds some WARM days and NO rain. Maybe I can get a day in out at Barns... Huh Les, whatta ya think? On another note, VE's annual Passion for Flashin' climbing comp is next weekend. Come on out and climb or cheer everyone on. Check yall later! duskerhu
