Anyone ever run into any potentially dangerous animals while hiking or climbing?

While out camping, I've faced a Cougar that ran away after opening and closing my Jacket like a bird flapping it's wings and literally screaming profanities until it flee'd. Wasn't sure if it got scared, or just really offended haha. Needless to say, I was shitting bricks while doing the bird flapping thing (I really thought it was gonna attack me) it's just how I reacted to the situation.

Anyone else got any stories?

I once found a momma raccoon with her babies on a ledge. She was quite persuasive in convincing me to GTFO.

There was also the asshole's dog that bit me at another crag... Except "that can't happen because she doesn't bite" despite the tear in my pack and slobber on my ass that would indicate otherwise.

Put my hand in a bees nest while on lead. Got stung 25 times while I finished the climb.

Put my hand on a rat snake on a ledge...she was sunning herself and was content to let me pass without reacting.

Ugly ugly stinging centipedes in Mexico...I climb very far off route to avoid them.

Routinely (a few times a season) step over copperheads on the trails up at the gunks.

I don't think any of these compare to a cougar encounter.

There are pics here somewhere of a dude fending a mountain lion (or some other big cat) with a poop stick.

Seriously.

Several rattlesnakes, mostly on the trail leading to the walls.

I can't remember the name of the guy that got attacked by the mountain lion... anyone?!?

Nearly handjammed on a scorpion in a moist Yosemite Crack.

Another sport climb, I was at the anchor about to drop the rope through the open shuts, and notice the rock was moving. juvenile rattlesnake just on the face of the rock, winding around the shuts.

As I discovered last weekend in the Organ Mountains - Nothing, I repeat, NOTHING, is more scary and dangerous than a snow covered agave plant. Imagine a bouquet of giant, needle-tipped syringes covered in fishhooks.

That was suprasup / suprasoup or something. He also had a chipmunk jump on his face while on the sharp end.

I nearly stepped on a rattlesnake on the approach to Washington Column. I also had to stand down a bull elk for the rights to the trail on the approach to the Blue Glacier in Olympic NP.

Oh, I also got out of the woods to chase an animal that was rifling through my stuff in North Carolina. I chased it about 100 feet before it suddenly stopped. Right then I finally managed to land my flashlight on it and saw a skunk with its tail up and ready to fire. Thankfully, he let me walk away slowly and didn't spray me.

ive had a group of several coyotes come up to me while camping at hunters bluff. you just make loud dumbass noisies and they scatter. but the 12 gauge also really deters them from fuckin with us. and the occasional crackhead from town trying to figure out how "those clippy things" (referring to a cam) works.

I cant believe that no one made the obvious cougar joke yet…

I am severely disappointed!

As for me: No cougars at the crags here…

The benefits of central europe - no dangerous animals apart from ticks. Those stupid fuckers Mad

And of course wasps and bees, but so far my climbing encounters with them ended without problems.

That's him. I could picture his avatar in my mind but couldn't remember his username.

The fact that he had pics to prove it are impressive, too.

Almost face-planted in it. Managed to get off with a stuck palm and cut on a finger tip that bled for an hour. Got so freaked by the idea that there could be a hundred of these fuckers and I couldn't see one of them, I turned around and humped it back to the car. Woefully underestimated the Organ Mountains once again.
