Usually, chic is the word I use, but I think that is a result of 4 older brothers. I don't really know what I prefer but I have been called - sista, chica, babe, doll, b*&^%, and lass. And who knows what else.

I usually use ladies (as in "Hey ladies, get funky), gal or girl for friends. Woman seems sooo old. I usually use chick negatively, as in "Did you see that chick, Brittnay Murphey, in 8 Mile. She was a nasty ho in that movie." I used to use chick a lot so I'm not sure why that changed. I like kitten and lady, too.
