If that were your hand, I think you'd be having a hard time getting all your letters while typing. Kinda interesting, but I don't think I want to see the pic of the guy who climbed with his unbreakable-band watch on.

Confession time. I edited my wedding ring out of the first photo in my profile. It was the only time I've ever climbed with it on, and the only reason it was there was that the climb was a really easy all-slab route, and I forgot it was there until I was ready to cast off on the first pitch and there were annoying people behind us acting all impatient even though we were being very efficient. Oh, yeah. Gross picture. I guess. It's just flesh and bone, people. We all have both.

During an electrical rescue corse I did a few years ago we were shown about a dozen photos of electricians who had lost fingers and in a couple of cases whole hands from wearing rings while working on live equipment. They sugest wearing the rings on a necklace if there is any risk of it catching. Not a bad idea!

Looks like it occured during "aviation maintenance" while working on a Navy plane. I imagine you'd have to take a pretty hard fall and catch it just right to cause that sort of damage while climbing, if it's even possible. I wonder if they have any good "necklace" posters.

It can happen to you while climbing. There's a photo in the Mazamas clubrooms, here in Portland, of a hand minus one finger that got left behind in a crack courtesy of a wedding ring. I imagine it would be rather easy to do, actually.

actually this injury had nothing to do with climbing. its a safety poster carried by the US Navy. i imagine he (i'm assuming its a 'he') got his ring caught in something mechanical. but the point still stands, and i imagine this injury would be the result of failing to remove any rings before climbing -- it makes me shudder just thinking about it...

It's a full avulsion called a degloving, sometimes the result of a crushing injury. My EMT book has a picture of a full degloving of a guys penis. Now that's a frightening sight.

It appears that this is a poster for the Naval Safety Centre and if you cut back the last part of the address it takes you to the page where this poster is under Aviation Maintenance, I would assume this was possibly a mechanic, for anyone who wonders what happened.

how Safe is my hemp necklace? What would happen if it snagged on somthing? Hemp is really stong and it is being held together by a 50lb test brass swivle clip. I wonder if it would break under my body weight or hold? I hope it would break!!!

EUW! gross is no lie. I would think though that if you had a ring on a necklace, probably your best bet is to wear it UNDER your shirt. I think that would keep it from snagging unless you did something really strange. Unless you aren't wearing a shirt...in which case, I'm not sure what would help.

If your necklace is that strong, I would take it off as well. At training we make all our students take off their necklaces, rings, watches, earrings, etc to stop such injuries. I know a Tai kwon do instuctor who had his nipple ring ripped out, it looks like he has three nipples now.

Ok... just a bit different, but.... I was watching a guy leading at a gym. Pulled the rope up and put it in his mouth (teeth) to grab some more. Can anyone finish the story?????? The tooth fairy had a few coins to leave for him that night. [ This Message was edited by: dstein on 2003-01-26 14:05 ]

This injury is called "Ring Avulsion" It is fairly common to varying degrees of injury. Do not wear rings while climbing. Beginners - this is why one never should hook a finger through a hanger.

Sorry to tell you climbers, but that is a navy poster. It is from the Naval Safty Center. Just check out the address when you click on the URL. It could happen to a climber easy! My very first time climbing I wore my wedding ring. I took it off half way through the climb.

A friend of mine was hooking the cables back up to a car battery using a wrench. The metal handle of the wrench was touching one side of his wedding ring, and as he was tightening the nut that secures the battery cable, his ring touched on a metal part of the car frame, causing it to "short out" or "ground" the positve terminal of the battery. The ring instantly became very hot and began to burn to the bone. Of course, the first thing he wanted to do was get the ring off, but he couldnt. I believe he had to cut the ring off, and it took a very long time to heal. So, for those of you who wear rings and like to do your own auto repairs, beware!

well, i'm about to head to the garage and work on the race car. i think on my way i'll stop at the army surplus store and buy a dog chain necklace to put my ring on while wrenching and climbing!! My wedding ring is a 9mm wide band made from 6A1/6V/2Sn ultra hard aircraft grade titanium. the billet certification form shows that the metal testing out at over 188,000psi so i know dang well IT won't be the weakest link!!!

Hmmmm, My wedding ring aleways was a bit snug and since I've started climbing my fingers have gotten thicker and now I can't get it off at all. I hope that I can find a way OTHER than THAT! Yow!!! Sounds like Its time to cut it off and start from scratch. (I generally refuse to not wear my ring, its only been off twice in 8 years, but in this case I think I have incentive)

In reply to: I love that picture ,used to look at it everyday in my old shop in VA.BCH.,VA. You must be a big fan of "traingirl" too. I gotta tell you, it's ony cool until you see that stuff for real. Then it aint so cool and you pretty much shut up about it from then on. Don't worry. You'll see. We all get there one way or another.

AHHH I just missed some of your posts... Euroford: "a 9mm wide band made from 6A1/6V/2Sn ultra hard aircraft grade titanium" I was thinking of getting a ti ring....but after talking to a couple of jewlers (and a doctor) I found that most of the hospitals don't have the gear to effectively cut a ti ring!! In many cases they have to get tools from a jewlery store (if they are even available). I was told horror stories of people losing fingers possibly because the ring couldn't be removed. Definitly take it off whenever there is any possibility of an injury. Alex

If for what ever reason (phsical or emotional) you can't get your ring off you can try taping over it with some finger tape. This should stop it getting caught on anything and ripping the best part of your finger away! My ring spends about 1/3 of the time on my finger, the rest on a 'biner on my harness cos i took it off right before I climbed last time and forgot to put it back on again. The bolt hanger thing is definitly true, never, ever do it.
