T,

Why are you opposed to resurrecting the age field, particularly if you have the option to leave the field blank? Just curious.

In the past, I have found this information useful--particularly in formulating a response to someone that has posted a reply to a comment of mine.

For example, my reply to an inexperienced climber may be different that a reply to someone with years of climbing experience.

Well I for one don't want anyone to know that I'm 40. Oops. To late. I guess you can put the age thing back in if you want. I let the cat out of the bag.

Bring em back! For people who are in school it is really nice to know which people in your area that have potential time available with similar scheduels. Leave the option if peole don't want to fill their's in, but at least give us the option.

I'm for the age thingy. I don't mind letting those who want to find out know I'm grey around the gills and I like getting that info. when provided from others. :P

Guys, I believe Tim mentioned something a while ago about getting this feature back. However, when there are more pressing issues having to do with the "back end" of the web site (speed, database issues, email migration, and so forth), this one has to be put down pretty low on the priority list. (I'm speaking from experience working in the software industry, BTW, not just pulling this out of my hat.)

I know a lot of the changes being made aren't necessarily visible ones, but they have a major effect on the day-to-day operation and administration (I'm talking the technical kind, here) of the site. Considering the small number of programmers that work on rc.com (for free and in their spare time), it's impressive that so much has been accomplished in such a relatively short time.

Cut 'em some slack. Just because it's not being done right this second doesn't mean it's not going to be done. It's just that "cosmetic" issues such as this one have to be prioritized lower than stuff that affects site speed, crashes, and so forth. I'm sure that once some of the larger, technical, issues with the site have been addressed that Tim & Co will start to look at cosmetic things like this.

Thanks for understanding.

Kate

No clue. You'd have to ask Tim about that (Tim? Any idea?). Or check out the list of bugs in the developer database. The quantity of those that need to be dealt with will at least give you a better idea of what the To-Do list is looking like these days...

I'll be adding in a mod where users can put in their Birthdays so that friends can be reminded when they're coming up. It will also eliminate the problem we used to have of people showing up as one year "younger" or "older" than they really were.

A lot of privacy-enhancing features are in the works, but they're prioritized after money-making features. We have to pay our bills first, and then we can tend to the little things that we'd love to implement, that make everyone's life a little nicer.

C'est la vie. Anyone who wants to get involved in development, I'll enable you for FTP and CVS access, and I'll tell you exactly where to look to change this stuff. (Don't everyone all step up at once.)

Mantis (the bug tracker) is going up again too, so a lot of these little nits will be candidates for inclusion into it. Should help keep track of things.

It will be at bugs.rockclimbing.com -- technically it already is, but it is bereft of a user table, making it kind of tough to use ;-).

Hey guys... Thanks for the great changes that are happening. Us barely computer literate types really appriciate it and wish we could help!

anywho--> I too am a fan of the age option, so if y'all think about when the dust settles... until then I will post my DOB in my personal section of my profile.

Thanks! K

yeah, I was going to hack in Birthday support so that people could be notified when their friends' birthdays were coming up.

I can't force people to respond truthfully about their age -- I mean, how do you know I'm not 53? -- but it might be more fun that way.

I'll do it, when I have some time to spend on it. Anyone else who wants to write the code (actually, just edit the existing code), feel free to send me a PM and I'll fix you up with a developer account. Otherwise it'll get done when it gets done.

NB. People can always put it in their profile blurbs, like you have, if they want to.

Ya... the age is pretty basic stuff.

That said, the fact that is isn't available yet isn't really that big of deal. After all, people can always fill in their age in the profile description. This field might actually give some more details besides age, provided they're open enough to fill it in... :?
