hi. i am planning on a worldwide climbing roadtrip next year. the thing is i am just starting research and thought i might call on the aid of ROCKCLIMBING.COM people. this is the question. what is the best climbing spot in the world? to make the question a little harder i am asking for trad, sport or bouldering areas as i am keen to do all three. so bring it on and if you are convincing enough i will see you there next year. ps i know montagu and waterval boven in south africa rate as top but i am looking for other places. thanks. :D

A very subjective question, one that will yield many different answers. Outside of the obvious destination places check the smaller areas and take in as much of the local flavour as possible, something that maybe more enriching than the best limestone or granite in the world.

If you're gonna spend some time in Australia, I would definitely plan a stop at Arapiles. Very convenient campsite. Excellent mutlipitch trad climbs at all levels a few minutes from the campsite. Bomber pro, steep moderates, lots of history.

I think you can spend a lifetime in California, and never climb the same rock twice. From Joshua Tree to the Sierras to the Siskiyous to Yosemite (of course) I think we have some of the best climbing around.

Hueco is generally acknowledges as perhaps the best climbing in the world. Aripiles is another on my top 10 places to visit list.

El Potrero Chico, Mexico Where else can you climb 9, 12, 15, 23-pitch bolted routes just seconds from your car??? Where else can you camp for free with nobody to hassle you??? Where else can you put up new routes on endless miles of big walls with nobody telling you what you can or can't do??? Where else can you spend the whole winter, or summer, for that matter, with just a few hundred dollars???

I don't want to diss south africa, but I wouldn't reckomend going there if your oly going for the climbing. Remember, that is a long haul plane ride to get to climbing that can be equalled or bettered by many other more convientient places. However, it may be worth a trip to South africa and southern africa in general for the wildlife. i went to Botswana for three weeks last august and it wasabsolutely incredable.

France, Marseille: the Calanques. White limestone cliffs above a crystal blue sea. Rock that grips you. Tons of bolted routes. Isolated, exotic and beautiful, just you the rocks and the blue sea beneath you. Plus if you come I'll show you around.

although itīs rather remote compared to say... europe for example, chile has some very nice climbing, only problem is that you have to travel a lot to be able to see all of them. check out socaire, las chilcas and torrecillas to name the best. Venezuela seems to have much to offer as well. I think baffin island is a bit remote dude, itīs an undertaking in itself to just get there! plus the rack you need to climb there is probably worth about 5 plane tickets

I'd like to recommend my Squamish stomping grounds, but I'm headed for the southwest US next year (East Cali, Arizona, Colorado, Utah, and so on) and think it would make an awesome trip for anyone, regardless of climbing style. I've done a fair bit of research and am doing more, so PM me if you need any detailed beta on those areas (or British Columbia climbing). Happy tripping! :D -CR

1) Patagonia (Fitz Roy massif) 2) the Needles, High Sierra Crest, and El Capitan, in California 3) High Atlas Mtns, Morrocco (specifically the sandstone from Alpinist 2) you should just kill yourself now if you plan on skipping any of these

Troye, Dude. If you come to Australia then you should check out the following area. In Victoria(a state of Australia) Arapiles - brilliant trade climbing on solid rock, some good bouldering and a few classic sport routes. The Grampians - about 100 different areas, sport and trade and some of Australias best bouldering(Hollow Mountain Cave). In South Australia(another state) Moonarie - All trade but a bit of a walk in with your gear (approx 1hr), apparently very good, but I haven't been there yet  In Tasmania(the little island at the bottom) Fraicenne Coles Bay These are the only ones I've read about but haven't been to any crags in Tassie. Although I've heard there is a lot to climb. Best save this for summer though. In Western Australia(the biggest state in size not pop) Margret River Albany - sea cliffs Definately worth a visit although you'll need to fly. Great weather and hot girls(more girls than guys too) New South Wales The Blue Mountains - My Favourite place to climb as it has the best sport climbing in Oz. Nowra - More sport climbing, it where a lot of the hard men go. Point Perpandicular - Sea cliffs with awsome exposure, sport and trad. Thats about it for the main areas. There are hundreds of small local crags that can offer some worth while climbing for a day trip. Have a great trip If you want a guide at Arapiles or the Gramps just PM me. I'm based in Adelaide. The names Dave by the way.

Your man Dave has it. A pretty short jaunt from South Africa (where you live, I see) to good old Australia. Didn't Rock vote Arapiles the best crag in the world? Anyway, a short trip from Araps to the Grampians - check out orangeoverhang's photo's if you need convincing. There is also the Hollow Mountain Cave for some badass bouldering at Gramps. Then you could come and bust out some crazy bouldering in Sydney, via Point Perp, Nowra and the Blue Mountains. If you get sick of Australia you can always flit over to New Zealand, and maybe go home via Thailand. Northern Hemisphere? Where's that then? On a more serious note, I don't know about your currency, but if its anything like our dollar it won't buy shit in the US. Something to remember. Good luck. Duncan
