A recent topic about placing more than one anchor piece in the same crack got hijacked by comments about the movie Vertical Limit, a movie we all like to trash.
I watched the opening sequence of VL frame by frame and learned a very frightening lesson. Did you know that if you fall on bolted routes that the bolts will actually explode out of the rock even before the rope goes taunt? :shock: That is why I stopped sport climbing and will only climb trad!
Anyone care to share other valuable lessons from the movie:?:

I learned two valuable lessons:
Hollywood really doesn't know, or care, about the reality of climbing and mountaineering... Why? Because the masses don't care either, they just want the action.
Lounging on a couch or in a movie theater is so much LESS entertaining than being out in the mountains and on the cliffs. We should all get out MORE!!!!

Yes, It's only a movie. The list of incredibly stupid moves is way too long to post here. My personal favorites, climbing with nitro, old nitro to boot; blowing a hole in a snow cap OVER trapped climbers, with said nitro; and leaping across a chasm and getting your ice axes to stick in rock, and you thought Stallone's bolt gun was cool! Too foolish.

Cut the rope!!!
also:
Redundancy and holding the rope with the belay hand are highly overrated!!!

I love that movie because it scares people from climbing and that means less crowding at the crags...

what did i learn from VL?
Rockclimbing is the slowest extreme sport hence hollywood was kind enough to fcuk it up and gives us this wonderful big screen production to watch. Sadly, most people, including me, would fall asleep watching a real trad climb in progress and so they must do this to make money.

Ummmm, i see several things wrong with your reasoning. I have fallen on sport routes plenty of times and have yet to see a bolt explode. And it would be absolutely impossible for a bolt to come out of the rock without any weight on it whatsoever.

I though he was serious. I would have assumed he was joking, but i don't remember seeing any bolts at all in the movie.

that first scene in monument valley is awesome, total entertainment. I liked it how they had the bumbling newbie climbers that caused the accident wearing like cutoff t-shirts and bandanas.

hey, that was my post.
i have learned a lot. the first was gear wont hold on a free route. the next is three cams on a belay isnt enough cause two will pull. and always to use mountaineering ropeing on walls(three people one 1 rope). thats all i learned from climbing..
i now know i can jump 20+ feet with ice axes to vertical ice and stick and dont even have to use a rope. always bring nitro.

Hahahaha, yeah that movie blew. It was kool when they climbed though...the ONE entire move(that i remember) Chris O'Donnel did.

Ever since watching THE movie, I ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS carry at least one Nitro pack whenever I climb now. I figure if some idiot tries to pass me, or is too slow above me, or just ticks me off, or there are no parking places or campsites available, or any number of reasons, well ....................warm up the Nitro, lets have a blast!

i liked the guy who jumped 10 feet to his right with a peice of pro in his hand and catches himself by jamming it in to a crack while in midair. im sure this is possible, but anyone who tries it is a MORON!! though id have to give you props if i saw it

I learned that when my wife gets bored watching a movie there is a small chance, very small chance, but never-the-less, a chance that I may just end up with a ..... :shock:
Needless to say that was a good night, climbing, beer, and :shock:

Yeah... Dig_Scott, I remember this thread. I got a kick out of it but don't remember if I ever replied.
I learned (I was tied up and forced to watch it).... that the director must not listen to the professional advisor (in this case, climbing).
I know they had one.
Those big-shots don't listen to anything. If you try and tell them "that would never happen"... they reply....
"This is Hollywood, Darllin".
It's no joke. They really say that.

Any comments on how real Mission Impossible may not have been.
However the picture way back were the guy was free soloing had to be real. Which was a really cool part to watch if oyu could squirm thought the backwards iron cross scean.
