In my gym the best climbers are Asian. Light-weight, strong and methodical in nature, they are awesome climbers. I mostly see white boys and gals clinging desparately to the wall with their weak hereditary blood.

Its about time some one realized the facts. The white man is the populaiton minority. Asians are the master race we are slowly taking over the world. We are like cockroaches we keep multiplying you can't stop us. Almost two billion of us are slowly taking over the world. Look at the likes of Yuji and steve hong if you want to see climbing ability. The only time we get screwed is on reach problems but with the advent of freaks like yao ming even those will fall to our superior gentics. So watch out round eye your time will come.

This whole subject was discussed before and turned into a war. I think it's being over analyzed. The answer is simple if you just look at the trends.
It's all about trends and really nothing more these days.

We all have equal opportunity so you can't put money in the equation anymore. If somebody really wants to do something they'll save the money and do it. Doesn't matter how rich or poor.

There are always trend breakers who will stray from the norm and excel in an activity dominated by another race or gender. These trend breakers draw attention to the activity which in turn starts a media frenzy. This media frenzy motivates people to try something different. Soccer is a great example. Before the big win by the women's USA soccer team I didn't see or hear much about soccer around here at all. All of a sudden we have a soccer field on every street corner. Ice skating was barely considered a sport around here until the whole media frenzy about Harding and Kerrigan, now the city had to build a new skate arena with two ice rinks to handle the crowds. Without the media being the driving force behind motivation you would probably find a huge drop in the number of people pursueing certain activities. Tiger woods also clearly sparked the interest of the black community to try a new sport. However, golf is the one sport that is the most elitist and snobbish sport ever created that deliberately makes a strong attempt to contain it's members to only the upper scale of the financial community. $100 green fees are insane and that's the low end of the spectrum. Golf is the one sport where money can be placed in the equation.

Anway, the fact is it's trends that society follows. Hopefully climbing will stay out of the media as much as possible. XGames is definately going to be motivation for a lot of people though.

I like this topic because it shows that regardless of race or ethnicity, you people are all stupid. I guess the frustrating part is that most of you don't even realize it though. (But don't be offended, I'm just being sarcastic). Chumps.

I am with you curt, eversince I come to US, I wonder why it is only a bunch of white dudes climbing :o
The economical answer is too simplistic, considering that gym climbing doesnt cost more than basketball shoes.
The muscle structure answer is funny, there are all kinds of people among all the races, thick, thin, muscular, skinny, it still doesnt answer why there isnt any one black guy climbing in my gym, whereas lots of black people are playing basketball or working out next to the wall.

What I can come up with so far, is that the reason might be recursive. There is only a very small number of black guys climbing, making the sport not much recognized among the black community. If any of the people you hangout with does not climb, it is more probable that you do not even think about the sport at all. Unfortunately, here in US, there is still social boundaries, and group behaviours. It is not about whether you would welcome any people to your scene or not, I guess it is deeper than I can analyze.
Similar problem with the women climbers, since historically climbing used to be full of testosterone, it was hard to get (or even decide to get ) into the group of climbers for a girl unless they are either girlfriend or wife. Now there are lots of climbing women, making it easier for any girl to start climbing. I guess in a few years more blacks will start climbing (and maybe eventually dominate  ), and making the enterance easier for the newer black climbers.

The climbing gym I go to has more girls than guys. The number of girls has gone up in the last few months, but I'm not complaining

I'm with fixxervi6 on this - I think it is a social (cultural) thing more than any other idea brought up. All I can afford right now (and many of my friends) is to go bouldering. The only piece of gear I own is a pair of shoes. Yet I don't see anything but white boys (and girls) out on the rocks. I see the same with the water sports - freediving, surfing, bodysurfing, kayaking, etc.

I agree with you trenchdigger, is a socio-cultural thing.

Non white people and latinos practice GROUP sports. Climbing is very individual sport.

In my country (Guatemala) most of the people think of it as a boring sport (why going up???) alone??? just a bunch of what, 3 guys?? with no music on the crags???

Compare climbing to basket, foot and baseball... get it???

As you can see, the places where climbing is a popular sport, is where people can do things alone without feeling bored. Is cultural.

A lot of friends who have gone climbing with me felt it fun but at first they were thinking the oposite.

First things first, by no means am i a spokes person for the black community but i can pretty much guarantee you all that that it comes down to 3 things; cultural, social, and economic boundries. economiclly a brother will spend $100 on shoes, but not to go tear them up on rock, thats stupid, he would rather look good in his $100 shoes. A brother will spend $200 to tint the windows of his car before buying a car alarm. It's sad, but true. And as far as media and exsposure is concerned, i don't think that you'll see Snoop Dog doing Ads for Black Diamond anytime soon. Also, as the playing field does even out we will see more non-whites on the rock.

Wait! i just remembered seeing Snoop Dog doing an Ad for Chevy a few months back for the new Impalas. Man, I pay good $ to see Emineim rapping danglling from a harness in Yoesimte.

I know some of us are thinking it i'll say it. Who would like to see a piece of pro pop, just to scare the $hit out of him?

God damnit!
I didn't know that I'm supposed to be rich!
here I've been a white climber for years and years and still
haven't gotten my money!
Where do I go for that "white climbers are rich" program?

I just don't understand why there has to be a race issue about sports in society today there is very little racism and with the minorities in the US out numbering the whites, the same issue is also with sex, there was just recently a forum on female climbers. i honestly don't think there is no real reasons for there to be these conflicts where all white males are seen as better than any else. That is bull s!@# everyone can get to where they want in life as long as they try and pull their own weight, all of are brains are capable of the same things and our bodies have the same limitations. So why are we so intent on making one person better than the other because of anatomy?

some of your theories are right and I agree that there forces like location, (a larger % of minorities live n big cities) and some cultural, but any sport, climbing or what ever are just as capable as the next guy or girl no matter the race and the color of their skin. it is all bout wanting it and putting effort in to is. It is as simple as that

Mainly this has been white vs. black.

I'll bring in an asian point of view. A lot of asians that climb, climb with a lot of intensity. There's definitely been an increase in asian climbers, but none that are the top of the world rankings, except for Yuji Hirayama.
