Biner or 'biner is short for carabiner, often useful in climbing.

Beaner is an ethnic slur that might be pronounced the same way, but looks plain wrong when it's used here to mean biner.

Clip away.

Haha no kidding. When you abbreviate carabiner, you should change the root of the word to sound like BUYNER instead of BEANER. Being half hispanic myself, I often wonder if I should correct people that say it that way. It is sort of embarassing to myself to hear people say stuff like that.

dont think i've ever heard beaner as an ethnic slur, but its still definitely biner. I guess a lot of people dont write or type words like that often so i can understand why it is commonly misspelled. Ive noticed that a lot of words get butchered on this site, probably for that same reason.

Oh, I don't supect anyone of bad intentions...just bad spelling. This particular misspelling has an unfortunate other meaning, though.

Some British climbers don't use biners at all. They clip into their protection with krabs. Imagine that!

I had never heard the term "beaner" as an ethnic slur until this last summer. I worked at a camp near Glacier leading backpacking and rock climbing trips. During our training, I said to the Program Director, or the head honcho, "Could you please pass me that biner?" Everyone just stopped dead in their tracks and I had no clue what I had done wrong. After being corrected I've tried to say carabiner everytime...but it's tough to switch habit!

Hmm, I actually had two new beta fish named 'Cara' and 'Biner'. :) Cara died before I moved to my new apartment and my new hispanic roommate got extremely insulted when she heard me calling my fish Biner. :? Oh well, I just explained it to her. I had just never thought of it that way although I guess I would be offended too.

ps: I agree w/keinangst, unless someone is trying to be insulted (which happens too--everyone needs to vent sometimes) It's usually clear if one is intended.
I make lots of language slips, often being amongst many languages, and usually its laughed off, as no one even considers that I might mean it in some negative way.
Of course there are assh*les out there, it's great when they make those kind of comments--it's like they wave a big flag that says "just to let you know before we get to far into it, I'm a (insert string here)"

I've been rather reluctant to use the word 'biner for the very reason that the original poster put up this thread - I'd hate to say it in the wrong place at the wrong time and be misunderstood.

Look. Last summer a friend and I were climbing and some white guy said something about his beaner being sticky and my friend, being a very aggressive latino, beat him down. It sucked for the stupid white kid, but you need to be aware of what some things sound like. This is why I think the root of carabiner should be modified when "cara" is removed, to avoid this sort of issue. Don't like it? Fine, I don't care. Keep using it. One day you might say it when the wrong person is around. It won't be a good day.

I've never even HEARD the word Beaner used to describe anything but an abbreviated carabiner, or a type of throw that hit some poor baseball player, and even THEN it might be "beener", I don't think I've ever seen it spelled out, just heard it spoken. So, what if someone is talking about a BMW and says "Beemer", but the word is heard wrong and said friend thinks he said this "Beaner" and gets in a "huff"? I mean, jesus, come on. Where are the roots of the derogatory definition of Beaner? Which came first, the carabiner, or the slang term? If the carabiner came first, then your friend needs to get over it. If the slang term came first, then your friend still needs to get over it while he's around climbers, because nearly everyone, at some point in time, uses the term " 'biner" refering to carabiner.

I like how it's the "stupid white kids" fault for your friend getting all pissy about him using the word biner. Sounds like your friend needs to lighten up and learn that not everyone is out to get him. I guess we should change the name of crackers so we don't offend white people (as mhr2000 said). Or the name of black paint from negro incase we offend a black person. We better call grease something else since greaser is a racial slur. Guess I need to brush up on my slurs before I head out to the crag, since I had never heard the term beaner before. Make sure I'm 100% politically correct so some ignorant a$$hole doesn't try to fight me cause I use a word he feels is insulting.

This politically correct BS is dumb. There are much better ways it could be handled. Get over it, people aren't always out to get you. It's not the man standing up tyring to hold you down, it was a simple word not meant to do any harm. An abbreviation for a word because we are all lazy.

I agree with Lox I would sue the shit out of your friend. Or whip out my draws and smack him with my biners. See if he takes offence to that.

Sorry, I just get annoyed with stories of people getting in fights because they used a word wrong or offended someone on accident.

I've worked in an office where they had a bunch of vt100-type computer terminals (AKA "dumb" terminals). There was a big discussion that this would be insulting to people who cannot talk and that we should rename these terminals.

I said I would go along with the renaming if we also renamed the vertical "blinds" in the office. :)

All Americans should adopt the Mexican word for carabiners: "karabina."
The abbreviation is "'bina" pronounced BUY-na, kind of like the first part of banana. This will help prevent confusion amongst the growing angry latino minority.

Keep safe and choose your words wisely, it is a very dangerous world out there.

But, for someone to fly off the handle after hearing what he thinks might have been a racial slur, clearly without knowing what the context is, is frickin' nuts. There are other words for people like that. Nuts. Apologies to any legume lovers out there...

Ok, I'm curious. And you did what? You, apparently knowing what was really meant, just let it happen? There's nothing stupid about the "white kid". Prior to reading this thread, I didn't know that "beaner" was an ethnic slur. Climbers, in my experience, talk about biners all the time and it invariably refers carabiners. Only towards the end of the thread did I figure out maybe what it's supposed to mean. I'm not stupid, but I may be ignorant in the area of racial slurs. They don't find their way into my vocabulary. I still don't really get it beyond latinos find it insulting.

It should have been a bad day for your friend, ending in a jail cell. "Beat[ing] him down" is clear assault and battery. Completely misconstruing an innocent comment as an insult would go nowhere as a defense. I'd much rather see violent, er..."very aggressive" people put away than have to worry that the totally innocent word I might next speak might send someone into a violent rage. Imagine, "Pass me that runner" and a Kenyan beats me up (Top distance runners are disproportionately Kenyan, if you don't follow that sport). Thanks, google. In the last 3 years, the winners of the Boston Marathon (men/women) have included 4 Kenyans, 1 Russian, 1 Korean. Does "sling" get anybody's panties in a bunch? Should I not say "panties in a bunch" because it makes women angry? Damn, did I just offend men who wear panties by assuming that only women would be offended by that? I mean, if you're a guy who likes to wear panties, it's none of my business. Whatever trips your trigger. #^%@! No offense to the anti-gun crowd intended.

I just don't get it. It's a nasty, sad, messy world out there sometimes, and all the time in some places. To choose to be offended by something innocent when a lot of people are getting worse treatment than hearing words they don't like... Nope, I just don't get it. "Climbsomething"'s got it. Sometimes you just have to lighten up.

I don't know about all Latinos, but Mexicans in particular like to eat refried beans with most meals. It's a staple of their diet, especially for the poorer families. Get it... they eat a lot of beans? I'm perfectly serious.

So calling them beaners is a stab for being Mexican, for eating beans and for being poor. Triple Whammy.

I'm half Mex too and the last time some one asked for a biner to clip in, I was hanging on the side of a rock.
People got to get over it. It's a tool, not an ethnic slang slur.
Got to see what is around you and forget what you came out of.
A biner is a biner even if you call it a beaner.
It's the term. Get use to it.
Now if I want to toss slang at you, then I'll just call you a biner and you wouldn't know the difference but to say that would also mean that I think you are to dumb to know the difference.
So in conclusion, be smart enough to know the difference between the Beaner and the Biner. It's like There and Their. different but the same well not.

dang str8 man. People just need to get over all the stupid things they get offended about. I'm a white boy and some people call me an albino or some stupid stuff like that, and i don't really care, it's just an adjective. And if you say biner when your in a converstation about climbing and someone gets offended you should just stab them with a piton.

This is ridiculous... should I get insulted everytime somebody says "pass the crackers" or "does anyone want some cheese and crackers?".

Exactly!

I got flamed a bit for saying it before, but I'll say it again, because it's the absolute truth: Often when a person is offended, it says more about the person being offended than it does about the person doing the offending.

Man, people need to lighten up!!!

Edited b/c I messed up my own quote

Boy, Jay--good thing you don't climb with any Muslims. THAT wouldn't be funny, would it? You better be careful so that you don't repel a beaner. Hehe. Also, Hillary, that tree problem looks pretty cool--what does it go at V1, V2 or so?
